What I can’t understand is why it’s so hard to find anything on it.

Wow, that means that there is only one I-400 class subs left to find. I-400 was captured in US waters and taken in. 401 in the same fleet as mentioned above, skiped town after being captured, now she has been found.

I-405 was found off England but her secreat cargo of gold and diamonds which was being delivered to the Germans was never recovered.

I-403 was destroyed in dock towards the end of the war, records indicate that this vessel had some serious problems ranging from engine troubles to the seal on the hanger always coming off. The Japanese had termed this ship the devil’s ship. It is also known that at least four sailors died during trials on this sub.

I-402 is still missing, some reports state that it’s off Peru where the population are half Japanese and supported Japan in WWII. If this is the case then it would have been hard to know who was on the sub. The other rhoumor is that it’s off Australia after being sunk by unsusspecting Allied ships in ASW practice. This I’d hold as true since there are records of Japanese planes flying over sydney during hostilities (I remember my grand father telling me about it). Some reports say that the plane was a Zero, others say that it was a Betty, but all say that if this was one of those planes then it must be a new type. Is it possible then that this plane was one of the planes on a recce flight over Sydney scouting for targets and that this plane came from I-402.

Mark: the USCG has always been my favourite of the US services, they were the first to allow women in their ranks, they were the first to have women skippers and they have always been at the front of the times in sociological changes!

It is a pitty that the other US services don’t take their example!

Thanks for that I know of the Naval Tech site, I’m a subscriber there but they still don’t mention the Improved class.

As for MdB getting Nukes, I don’t see that happening for a while yet, mostly due to the cost of the development. No country that has nukes are going to either sell one to them nor will they help Brazil build one.

Always a pleasure mate, if I can get a hold of my old friend in Brazil, I’ll let you know what the MdB have on Sao Paulo.
