So you want to know what merchant ships would make the best carriers huh???

Happy to oblige, simple answer- Car Carriers

    http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/china/images/stuft-4000-car-carrier1.jpg

    http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/china/images/stuft-4000-car-carrier2.jpg

Lok at it this way, these ships would be the easiest to convert, they alread can take the weight (equasion here being 5 4WD [SUV’s in American talk] equal the weight of one SHar/AV-8B+ and since these ships usually carry around 5000 cars at a time, you can see that this equates to them being more than able to handle 40 or so Jump Jets and still have room for the added extras needed for Air Ops

Wow there seems to be a lot of interest in my movie, hehehehe, well I’ll post more about that in the GD section so as not to get a down dressing from the powers above 😉

Fed: I know too well about the Lynx being cleared for ops on the Tp-22’s, But for some reason or other the Lynx was rendered in compatible with the modifications done to the two ships, thus they turned to the SH-2G’s. Checking the stats over I find that if anything, the Lynx is the better suited machine mainly because of it’s smaller size.

Tid: I did hear something about the SH-2G’s being only a year away from service, but seriously mate, we’ve been hearing that for how long now??? I didn’t hear about the Powers being leased, but that is great news. Yes these machines do come fully marinised and with manual folding blades, they are now in service with both:

    South Africa

    And Sweden-Swedish designation Hkp-15

    http://www.dgualdo.it/k26.htm

The South African ones are LUH models but are marinised and belong to the Air Force and the Swedish ones are jointly owned by the Air Force (SAR duties) and the Navy (deployed aboard the Visby class Corvettes) hence the words on the side of the machines in the pic below

Ok guys I know this is a little late, please forgive me I’ve been away for a bit, reguarding that first design right at the top, there are actually three cats (marked in Red on my pic, jet deflectors are marked in Pink and the two lifts are marked in Blue.

At 27K tonnage the ship is able to support 12 Hornet sized fighters, 3 Hawkeyes , 3 Seahwak sized ASW helos and 2 Seaking sized General duties helos (or three smaller Allouette III SAR helos)

If you ask me, the Spanish never gave up on this design, I have a funny feeling that they modified it and it is now what is on offer to the RAN. Our LHD’s will be only helo capable but one really questions defence and the government on this since they are addiment about getting the VSTOL version of the Lightning.

BTW, the official RFT has now been issued for the supply of two LHDs to the RAN and Navantia have teamed up with Tenix (meaning the ships will be built in Western Australia. ADI have teamed up with Armaris (Newcastle built ships),the winning design will be chosen early in 2007 with an entry in to service no later than 2012 for the first ship. This means that the ship will start being constructed around 2009 and completed by early 2011.

Not really Scoot old friend, Australia’s problems stem from the fact that we wanted too much crammed in our machines, a suitable annalogy would be to put a P4 computer system into and old Commodore 64, it’s just not really possible. New Zealand have been flying their G’s around for a while now and they love them, they bought MOTS versions and not Hybrid version like us.

Egypt and Poland are happy also with their G models, so that goes to tell you alot about what our military is like, we want to be the top of the game technologically, but in doing so, we are causing more problems and not just getting on with the job.

Hands up all those who think Norway will drop out? Me

The Lightning is becoming the biggest joke around, it’s way too expencive, can’t carry (internally) standard A2G weapons meaning that they will have to design build and market new weapons (great money spinning idea- buy our weapons or you’ll have nothing but flying targets) and above everything else, only the US will get the full spec aircraft! To top it all off, if you need any sort of work done to them, you have to send them back to the US to get fixed, who’s pulling who’s leg?

Gripen is the way to go for Norway, at least GI (Gripen International) don’t have any problems with technology transfer. It’s a pitty they haven’t made a twin engined version, they’d sell them to us down here in a flash.

RLP: mate I’ll have a quick hunt around and see what I can find and get back to you on it, otherwise I’ll have to go digging through my vast files of publications (Aussie section) and that might take a bit… Stay tuned

Yes I am mate, if the RNoAF only have one fighter aircraft doing all the combat work in their inventory and they have put money into the JAS-39N, then this would presumably mean that the Norwegians are going to pull out of the F-35, the question is when. It makes more sence to me to have two combat types in your service thus I thought the Lightnings would do the A2A stuff and the Gripens would be the Bomb Trucks and Recce ships.

Dis, meaning Distiller, does have a point about sending a hint to SAAB about including any Kongsberg hardware on future Gripen customers, and there are a few out there atm, Brazil have re-opened the FX program, Bulgaria is looking rather seriously at the Gripen same with te Czecks and Slovaks, and then you start looking further ahead and the Gripen might be a good candidate for all the Mig-21 users as a replacement (Croatia, Serbia and I am sure you can think of a few more) 😉

According to some articles that I have read, the line will close soon and anyone wishing to order now will have to pay for the restaffing. Boeing have already placed their final orders for long term parts so this is definate.

You also forgot about the Cannucks, the RCAF will like their four as well and with Sweden now buying into the European time share of An-124’s, I doubt that the Norwegians will go for their two C-17’s, makes more sence for them to also buy into the time share agreement.

There is a lot of sentiment down here that the four we bought are not enough and that we should buy two more, time will tell I guess, unless the government here are also going to buy some A-400M’s and retire the C-130H’s. Sounds silly though since the RAAF has had so much trouble with software problems on the C-130J’s.

Tid, mate it was a C-17, it flew over my place in the Gong, I heard it but by the time I got out there with the camera all I could see was a small dot in the distance, well enough to make out the huge T tail and four engines and unless there is an Il-76 here in Australia visiting from India, the C-17 is the only candidate.

As for SIA, yes it is gone (thanks fro reminding me to change the signature here 😉 ) So much happened that caused its demise, especially me becoming a director of a movie. Perhaps later on when I get more time I’ll start it up again and enjoy what we once had, till then feel free to email me any discussions you whish to have. I do miss it, it was rather unique in the fact that there is no other forum on the net that you can discuss all the various military subject in one place. Thanks though for the support.

    **Edit**

There you go guys, changed it, The Run… is the name of my film that I am making, it’s a military themed short film I’ll keep you all posted about it!

So Swerve, are you saying that Norway will, by doing this, eventually pull out of the F-35 party? Dis has a point about it being a reminder about Kongsberg

Good thing we wait with the decision of witch fighter to purchase, untill later on, unlike the people down-under. Many things can happen in the next few years.

Yeah mate, Australia might kick John Howard out and buy some decent planes for a change 😀 😀 😀

Interesting how they say it will replace the F-16 around 2016. If this is going to be the case, then that means the F-35’s (should Norway continue down that path), will primarily be just fighters. Whilest this makes sence on a number of levels (it not being able to carry much ordanence internally in the air to ground roll, it having a better/ smaller radar cross section and all the other various factors), it is good to see that the RNoAF are not putting all their eggs in one basket with the F-35 like Australia has done. We are now becoming aware that to replace a strike plane with the capabilities of the F-111 with the F-35 is just plain stupidity- sadly it will take a change of government to fix this mistake.

Odd how there has not been anything in the local news sources down here about it, usually there is a huge fanfare and shibang about this sort of stuff but I guess with the current “Anti-War” sentiment and these planes mainly flying to and from said zones, perhaps this is why they didn’t make too much of a hoohar about it.
