Interesting, well I guess the F-16 is an old airframe now thus the US should have no problems clearing it for being built in India (which is what India want IIRC).

In another news on that page, I find it interesting that the PAF are still going ahead with the J-10 purchase (well FC-20 according to the article). What really suprises me is the fact that they are buying 32 single seaters and only 4 dual seaters. The equation for training seems to have gone right out the window here. Usually the equasion works out to be one dual seat trainer for every 4-6 single seaters. This equasion works out to be one trainer for every 8 single seaters, I forsee a high demand on the few dual seaters unless they intend to buy more later.

What will happen to the 12 Blackhawks posted to Holdsworthy for special Ops? Are they going to scrap them, or just the rest of the fleet.

This is still the plan mate, They will be based At Holsworthy which has been deemed as the center of the east coast (in terms of population capitals), this is to provide a better rapid resopnce time for all the eccconomic centers that are supposedly a target for terrorist operations. As for their upgrade, I can not say what is going on there as the project is supposedly a colaboration between state and federal governments (to me this seems odd but considering the state governments are funding this group as well I guess they have to have a say in it.

Pale: mate where did you come up with those numbers? I make the RAN out as needing at least 8 but 10 to cover everything! At the end of 2004 we had 7 Seakings in service and that had been left after the 12 we bought (this being 10 Mk.50’s in 1973 and 2 Mk.50A’s as attrition in 1979- all remaining Mk.50’s were later upgraded to Mk.50A standards). Also I’d like to point out that we will later follow up this order with another batch not only to replace the Seahawks, but as ships compliment when the new LHD’s come on line (these needing at least 2 helo’s per ship each of RAN type- the rest will be Army owned).

Additional to Sam’s message, I was just watching the ABC news and we are getting 34 MRH-90 helos for Au$2B this is in addition to the 12 already on order.

The new helo’s will be built in Brisbane at Eurocopters local facility. Unclear in this deal is the split between Army and Navy, as both services need these machines. But what is xclear is that the Seaking and Blackhawks are to be replaced with these new helos. This still falls short of the numbers needed to fully replace both types in both services and no word yet of the Seahawk replacement which was to also have been part of the Air 9000 deal.

Also mentioned are two new airstips to be built for C-17 operations, one in the Northern Territory and one in Western Australia.

There is still confusion as to where the Globmaster planes will be based and it now seems more likely that they will be based at Amberley with Boeing’s local support facility gaining further support contracts in reguards to these new planes.

Greetings from Australia mate and welcome to the board.

I have heard about fity million different roumors concerning this ship and I was suprised that AdC only bought one but more Dukes.

What I have read they are to get a similar modification to what the Romanian vessels got including the 3″ Oto- Melara DP rapid fire gun which is in keeping with what is fitted to the Dutch vessels. Also the MM-40B2’s are to be fitted as the Harpoons are not on offer to any South American navy (silly US pollicy).

It should be interesting to see what refit the Dukes get, I mean will they use the 4.5″ or convert to the 3″. Then there is the question of filling the VLS systems, personally I feel that the Israeli Brark system is the go here. It’s proving to be one of the most important systems that is readily available to anyone in the world.

Frac: mate the Sterling system is back at ASC and roumor has it that now that Collins is back there it is going to be fitted which to me makesn sence since it is expected to be out of fleet commission for 2 yerars, six moths having already passed.

We were always taught back in the navy that the Sub service forms bot the first tier and the third tier in the line of defence, they can strike and they can defend.

Dan is right those are HMAS Manoora and Kanimbla (formerly USS Saginaw and Fairfax County).

The reason I wouldn’t call these second hand was because I saw first hand the level of work these received when we bought them. Basically we gutted them right out and started afresh with them, the only thing that is old about them was the engines of which they have all been replaced now, and the basic hull which was scraped right back and new plates welded in spots where the rust had eaten the hull right away. We even changed the layout of the interior.

The work was so extencive that it took two years longer than expected, but yes these are the most important fleet assets we have these days. It’s been the operation of these vessels that have prove4n we need the much bigger and more capable LHD’s ion our fleet and I wouldn’t be suprised if at some point in the next 25 year plan (current one leading up to 2020), we see the RAN with another carrier or two!
