1. Does Portugal have plans to upgrade their fleet to a common standard?
2. 60+03 ——– P-3C CUP coast guard version , Is this machine going to replace the Elint Atlantic in German service thus not needing the full CUP upgrade?
3. Where will the German machines be based and with which sqdn?
4. Where will the Portugeas base their machines and with which sqdn?
5. Does the FAP operate a forward airbase that these could be operated out of?
6. What is the most likely mission profile for the FAP models? Can we expect to see them floating around the skies half way out in the atlantic or will they just fly around the coast of Portugal?
Ja WorsleyJa are you quite sure that all ten hardpoints are compatible with the Harpoon? It would be a very unlikely operational loadout and so it would seem to be rather pointless wiring all the points for them.
Yes Dan I am sure, I have seen a pic with all ten hard points loaded with Harpoons (Damd I’ll have to go through my files and see if I have it, I will find it though). Yes it is highly unlikely that this warload would ever be carried in reality, but the fact that the option is there only reinforces the position that they are looking at the Orion fleet to take up the slack.
Flogger: Mate years ago we rejected the Tornado in favour of the Hornet, to take them would be a silly move even if they are an intrim measure. Nothing against the actually I love the flick knife, but in order to have the amount you propose that would mean cutting into the Hornet fleet as well. I don’t mind giving up the Hornets, but why do so for only a short period of time?

Ja WorsleyI remember going to an airshow at Bankstown one year when there was an accident involving HARS’s Neptune, the MoF’s Tracker and a fully restored CAC mustang.
Aparently the neptune and the tracker were to fly side by side just far enough apart to allow the Mustang to fly in between them. Well the result was a wind draft that blew the Tracker closer to the Neptune, the wing tips of all three clipped and that ended that. All made a safe recovery but that sort of flying is now banned under Australian Safety laws.

And who is paying for development of the F-35? All the countries that are signed on, that’s who and this is where the problem is being caused, we’ve all put money into the program to develope a plane that can defeat radar and give the bad guy a tough time- both in the air and on the ground, yet now the US is sparking up and saying “you can’t have the full spec planes because we can’t have anyone opposing us” (that is only my words ok but that is how it is sounding not only to me but to all involved). Not even the UK who are a first level partner are going to get the full spec planes, nor now a choice in engines, does this seem fair? The UK have spent billions on this project and now they are coming out of it with planes that are going to be the same as those in service with Australia or Singapore who haven’t put as much in as they have.
If you ask me, the US is in serious trouble with this program and had better think about who is going to get what out of the deal! I don’t know about the other countries, but in the agreement signed by Australia over the development of this plane, we specified that if the final product was not up to our specs, we would pull out and all monies returned to the full amount.
Personally I think the biggest problem with the F-35 Program is George W Bush. He’s duped everyone, kinda like his pollitical life!!!

Secondly, the P-3 can carry up to eight Harpoons…..not 10.
Try again mate, Three under each wing and four under the fuselage, sure you can’t open the bay doors but you don’t need to with that kind of package. (tried to find the pic but can’t- someone else out there might have it). With te AP-3C upgrade program they increased the wing strength to allow a third missile to be carrierd. They also zero houred the airframes and worked on the electronics. These planes now are so advanced that a normal Orion crew would get lost sitting in one. It is rhoumored that two of them were upgraded as ELINT platforms, but there has been no comment on that issue- but makes you wonder why the first two were shipped off to support ground troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Now mate as for the Pig replacement, a lot of the options currently on offer are nowhere near as good as what they are replacing, you know that, I know that even blind Freddy can see that. The government is now starting to see that and that’s why they have initiated this case study. It may eventually prove that we need the Pigs to stay in service for those extra ten years, but I doubt that (the only logical reason I can see for that is the FB-22 finally coming on line and atm the USAF don’t know what it wants in this matter).

Ja WorsleyThat’s right, the five new A330-MMRT’s are to be based at RAAF Amberly (current home of the Pigs (remember gys the RAAF call them Pigs not varks).
These tankers will help increase the range of the Orions and Hornets which are to take up the slack upon the retirment of the Pig fleet. IMHO the Orions are a fearsome machine especially armed with 10 Harpoons, but that means that they are going to have to spend time intergrating all the other weapons into the AP-3C fleet, meaning more down time. After the recent upgrades, do we really wnat the fleet down for weapons upgrades and intergration?
The recent announcment of the decission to buy yet another new missile type (the AGM-148) is also cause of concern to the weapons intergration factor. We have to see if it will work and what tweeking needs to be done then to make them work, I mean with SLAM-ER they used the basic Harpoon interface, the JASSM is a totally different missile!
AGM-65 is another weapon I was thinking of although I don’t know if Aussie Pigs use that one or not.
No PII, both the RAAF and RAN do not use the Maverick in service, we chose the Penguin missile over the Maverick to arm the navys SH-2G’s. the Kiwi’s however do operate the Maverick on their SH-2G’s as this gave them a common armourment with the now retired Skyhawks.
There has been much talk over an intrim solution and so far the best option they are coming up with is the F/A-18E/F Hornets. The F-15E’s were toyed with but the SubPar Hornets offer a good deal of commonality with the current RAAF Hornet fleet, reducing Piot down time due to retraining and also logictically speaking seems to make sence as there is a lot of common parts to be shared, common parts means money saved.
Ja WorsleyI had heard about this on the news, they are saying that the true cost of the plane is actually out of our reach but we are staying in the program because the business that is generating is going to help pay for some of the planes (especially if the final orders are staying put and all the current countries buy them like is being touted).
No one down here disagrees that it should be better than the Hornets currently in service, but what Dr Jensen is saying is that these planes were originally designed as a “look first-shoot first” system but now that has changed yet the price hasn’t, infact the price has climed up and up. Since the dog fighting capabilities are now inquestion we really must wait for the first ones to fly in order to make a final decission as to wether to finally buy them or not.
There are other systems out there that can either match or defeat the feared Flankers and the new Mig-35’s that are starting on the production lines, and Dr Jensen is only keeping the public informed (with a team of experts- none of whom are Dr Kopp or affiliated to him) about potential risks in the specified product.
I agree that there is cause for alarm here, especially if we signed on for something that we are not getting now and at such a high cost, but I also agree with PII in that we have to wait to see how the final result goes. As for the replacement F-111, this is becoming more and more apparent in Canberra that the F-35 would not be able to come anywhere near the same range and capabilities of the Pig. Canberra has initiated a case study to cover the gap with a recommendation as to how best fill this gap and a result offered in two years (the case study is also to look into UCAV alternatives as well as other strike options such as the dead Tomahawk fit out for the Collins class subs).
Ja WorsleyOK the one that Matej is showing is an ERA radar. I found this article in Spainish on a Czech news site about how the Americans have asked the company not to sell the SIDE radar to China over concers that it could use these systems to help target planes and ships near Taiwan should China wish to move agressivly and take that country back.
Apparently the sale is worth narely 47 million Euros for just six systems but the VERA company is not going to loose out because the US is now looking at buying them. The whole problem with these radars is that they can spot “Stealth” planes and ships using passive systems only and can direct other assets to the incoming threat.

I can’t find anything on the system you have at the top there but logic dictates that it must be a similar system to the one I mentioned just mounted on a smaller more air portable truck
