GL was the Squadron code for 185 Sqn, which flew Hampdens until May 1940

However on 28 September 1939, on the day that Mr Hitler was due in Kiel to present the Iron Cross to a U Boat Commander, a Blenheim 1V of 110 Sqn crashed near the city during a reconnaissance sortie to the area. Believed to have been shot down by fighter aircraft.

Kiel wasn’t attacked on 15 August though Hannover Brunswick and Magdeburg were.

Kiel was attacked on 8/9 August 1941 when 2 Hampdens and 1 Whitley were lost.

T/o 22.16 North Luffenham, Passed over an Allied convoy off Spurn Head and was shot at and damaged. The aircraft crash-landed 05.30 near Fosdyke on the N Bank of the Welland, 6 miles SSE of Boston, Lincolnshire.

The next raid on Kiel wasn’t until 31 August, a minor raid with no losses.

Well done Ashley.

2004 has not been as bad as 2003 with the death of my Father, but it does take time to mend.

The highs have been, our Holiday in Kenya, being able to visit three air shows in the UK, to meet many of the contributors to this forum and of course the Yellow Peril.

The biggest low was loosing my faithful old hound “Misty” back in August, but at least I know her and my dad are enjoying fishing together once again.

With 2005 drawing closer, I’m looking forward to more airshows, more Snapper baiting, hopefully Tanzania in March and turning the big 40 in February.

THe nearest date to April 4 1941 on which a raid was launched against Kiel 7 – 8 April. There were no operations to Kiel or that area on the 4th.

However on the 7- 8 April 4 aircraft were lost 2 Whitleys and 2 Wellingtons. 1 Whitely came down in Holland, the other was last heard of at approximately 5005N 0348E.

I’d be very careful where this thread leads, the subject has not been received well before.

All I’ll say on the subject is what a person does in the privacy of their own home is their business, as long as they are not harming others, then how they lead their live’s is upto them.
