The other thing posted is why did we not buy American instead, well if you go down that route, you lose the skills, designers and engineers to produce a home grown item in the future and suddenly become reliant on buying everything from other countries in the future as you have burnt your bridges, again not a good state of play to be in.
As the second or third largest supplier of arms after IRCC the US and Russia, for a nation that no longer produces indigenous aircraft designs other than the Hawk. Bringing in non local designs such as Sentry, hasn’t exactly hit our design, engineering and skills base hard in reality. BAe Systems are still involved in Typhoon, Hawk, the F35 with Lockheed Martin & with EADS on the A400m as well as various non aviation and civil projects. I also assume that despite not being part of the winning bid for FSTA, BAe will still have a minor support role to play through EADS.
At the time of the order, the only alternative was Atlantique 2 or refurbished P-3s. There wasn’t a MOTS design available other than those.
If the US hadn’t cancelled the P-7, they would be flying from Kinloss now and Nimrod would be a memory in a Museum.
Thanks for a constructive answer Dave, sorry if I come across to others as a “real joker” !!!
If no off the shelf alternative was available, was the possibility of adapting civilian types currently in service explored, i.e A340, 777 etc ? Surely if this was an option for Future Tanker Project, then why not for a Nimrod replacement ?
Nostalgia costs !!!
Why didn’t the RAF/MOD look to EAD or dare I say Boeing for a more modern off the shelf design rather than trying to cobble together something from a 60 year old design and airframe. Surely the problems with the AEW variant should have rung alarm bells in the corridors of White Hall or wherever they make these ludicrous decisions !!!
Will they restore the connecting tunnel that goes straight to the cellar of the Stork Hotel?
Sorry….but somebody had to be the first to suggest it.:o
I looked at the title and thought, who is going to be the first to mention, Stork, shoes, Churchill etc….. Why am I not surprised ?
Now if the Isle of Wight could become an offshore island like the Channel Isles, it might be able to have an international airport, tax free and a tax haven for the rich, even its own aircraft register. 😀
Newforest, the Channel Islands are neither Tax Free or a Tax Haven and at present do not have their own aircraft register, though this is being investigated as a revenue line !
For longevity of service, it’s hard to beat the Centurion. I believe the Israelis still have a model in service based on it.

What I’ve read recently about the M1, it appears to have some major flaws, especially with the protection of key components again RPG’s.

WL349 was still around in 2008 according to Google, possible at Staverton.
WF991 appears to be a BP Balliol T.2 !!!
I think it was made payable to Mrs EN830
No, that one bounced as well, she is not happy !
Andy, can you ask your pay master where my cheque is, the last one from his Nigerian contact bounced !!!
Ah yes, I remember it well, apart from Dogsbody himself, there were accounts of German bombers being shot down by rockets over Liverpool, Americans filling the bars of Liverpool well before they arrived in any significant numbers, Churchill’s shoes, hydraulic leaks in a Firefly, crash landings in a DC3 and much much more.
There were those who jumped to his defence, I recall getting a series of PM’s from someone in the US who thought we should be embracing his stories and not ridiculing them, not that we were. Sadly, the plausible bits of his wartime memoirs were quite interesting, but were over shadowed by the fact that he wouldn’t accept rhyme or reason when it came to his claims about DB being in the Stork Hotel, despite all the facts and accounts being stacked against him. It was all one big Government conspiracy to which we were all party.

*Edited to add* I wonder what happened to Mr Williams? It must be 6/7 years since round one of “Storkgate” began…
I am lead to believe he is still writing his memoirs to the north of Sydney. He has posted on the interweb a few times in the past 12 months, but I notice that the various threads are soon pulled, so I guess each has fallen to his usual rants etc.
Dave they appear to be early Blenheims
