Exactly. A good crash recovery group or museum, such as the excellent Shoreham BoB museum, presents carefully put together and meaningful displays with full context and respect for both the remains and the people to which they relate. Bad ones just show bits of twisted unidentifable alloy and the same range is evident in many other museums – a case full of unidentifiable pot shards is just as bad as mangled piles of alloy.

Hawkinge is another museum which, when I visited last, displayed articfacts from recoveries in a thoughtful manner.

In my own former industry I have on occasion seen this ‘sniffy’ attitude toward ‘Engineers’, from fresh, recently qualified and chartered graduates…who in reality, when put to the test, couldn’t engineer themselves out of a paper bag.

They learn, but it usually takes about a further ten years. 😉

Just think if you worked for the fiduciary subsidiary of an offshore law firm like I do. Where despite years of studying and passing exams, if you’re not a Lawyer and not accepted to the bar then there’s stuff in the bottom of a bird cage more worthy.

However on the bright side at least I didn’t have to under go a sense of humour lobotomy.

Sorry! Never sure now who is joking and who isn’t! The only bit I know is for real is the bit about the Blackpool hotel and the aliens. All else is fantasy la-la land!! Anyway…according to Yorkshire TV the other week the Dam’s Raid was led by Douglas Bader, the legless VC winner. It was on the telly. Must be true! Andy

He was in the Vietcong as well as Liverpool,it’s amazing what you find out through this forum !!!! 🙂

Like many on here I’m big enough to congratulate all concerned, though like many I still have my doubts that the revenue will be available to keep it flying for long. Only time will tell.

Will it be in Jersey next thursday, as they promised on local TV last year ?

The Protection of Human Remains Act would only cover any excavations in England and Wales, I doubt if it could be stretched to cover any excavations in France and I would question how it would cover any wrecks in international water.

“I suppose we could also explore the theory that his Spitfire was abducted by aliens” – I thought that was still classified information!

    Tom

Could we explore the theory that these aliens deposited him in a Liverpool hotel, to serve out the rest of his war in luxurious captivity????

This is going to be my last post in this thread, for two reasons

Ah, a Forum Flounce, we’ve not had one of those since the Flounce Summer of 2004.

If the digging up of aircraft or removing them from remote high ground crash sites is henceforth called recovery and not archaeology would that not keep the academics from getting upset?

Aviation archaeology doesn’t just encompass digging for bits of aircraft, don’t forget the proposed surveys and digs around various former RAF BoB bases, which will, no doubt, be conducted along the same lines as the so called “classical” archaeological digs.

And, as to upsetting the academics, why should they be spared just because they’ve got a piece of embossed paper and letters after their names? In fact lets run up behind them and pull their leather “elbowed” patched cardigans over their heads, and call them names like specky four eyes. Ugh maybe not. 😀

Does anyone know the German perspective on this. If I recall correctly Galland entertained Bader after his arrival in France and introduced him to a Luftwaffe officer who it waqs claimed shot Bader down. Was there evidence that this is in fact what happended ?

Well I dunno about Andy, but I’ve run out of energy and ammo.

Dilip, it’s been fun having your’s and Andy’s contributions to the debate, and if nothing else comes of it at least you may have cleared the air between the two of you.
