The RAF didn’t achieve air superiority during or immediately after the BoB. Tactics changed and the Luftwaffe swapped the majority of it’s efforts to night bombing, which, until the technology of the day caught up, it could do fairly imperviously.

The UK Aerospace industry is the SECOND largest on the planet, only the USA has a larger industry than we do.

It is simplistic nonsense to focus purely on final assembly. There is no value add, no technology and precious little employment in simply bolting bits of aeroplanes together built by other people. The REAL high tech is in things like wing design, manufacture and assembly, fuel systems, avionics, powerplants and the whole host of other systems on an aircraft or weapon system.

The industry today is truly global and there are very few totally indigenous aircraft any more. Just how much of a Boeing 777 do you think Boeing actually make?

No problem, next time I see a 777 flying overhead I’ll remember to think, I’m so proud of that, 500,000 British made rivets flying in close formation 🙂

On the news tonight Andy Green reckoned the car could go faster again, all that was preventing this were the tyres which have reached the limits of their design. He also said that they only used five of the six gears available.

Sir Alan Smith spoke about Bader with a reverence that I have never seen before. Spoke about him as though he was a god. I did hear a rumour that Bader was hated by the men who flew with him but never heard anything apart from that rumour and I think my chat with Alan Smith proves otherwise. Ali

Bader appears to have been a leader of men, no question. He pulled 242 Sqn together after it had returned from France in 1940, despite receiving mixed reviews from the predominantly Canadian personnel when he arrived.

He was certainly egotistical, had his and Leigh Mallory’s views on the “Big Wing” been generally accepted during the BoB the outcome may have been totally different. It was a tactic he still argued, many years later.

I have read/heard several times, that his relationship with the lower ranks was not at all good, he tended to treat them with certain amount of distain.

It would be interesting to hear from anyone who worked in the hotel that he was finally incarcerated how they found him !!!! 🙂

A country that produced the Spitfire, Hurricane, Camel, Pup, Lancaster, Vimy, Halifax, Mosquito, Vulcan, Victor, Comet, VC10, TSR2, Hunter, Lightning and Hawk just to name a few, is reduced to producing a design that dates back to when Pontius was still taking lessons for his pilots licence.

Even third world countries such as Brazil, South Africa and Canada produce more home grown aircraft than the UK. 🙂

My view, is if you were thinking of putting a £1- into the lottery every week you might as well give it to a charity as a 14 million to 1 chance, is no chance.

Even with those odds, someone somewhere does win.

Those could be considered to be iconic. But some relatively unknown footballer spread eagled on a soccer pitch, sad yes, iconic no.
