In defence of that book, it is written from the Vulcan crews point of view. 🙂

But I would really enjoy reading a similar book from a Victor crews point of view, especially the one that almost ran out of fuel on the way back – that must have been tense.

I would love to see one fly. Especially an early one without all of the pods that the later ones gained.

    Stunning machine.

Every bit as stunning as the Vulcan IMO.

I thought Razorback only applied to early P-47s?
Had a rather sharp spine on it.

While I suspect you are correct about the source of the name, it is now commonly used for the P51 too.

It’s not ‘tragic’. Some people need to get a sense of proportion. There are plenty of Vulcans littering the countryside already, one more or less makes not a not of difference in the scheme of things.

But Xh558 isn’t just any other Vulcan. She has created more interest for our aviation hobby than any other individual aircraft of any type that I can think of. People who otherwise have no interest in aviation have come out in their droves to watch XH558s appearances.

Even if it is a largely new build, it is still a much welcome addition to the scene. 🙂

It’s a pretty tragic outcome IMO. Had she gone to Brunters or Elvington, at least she would have been able to wow the crowds with the odd fast taxi. At Doncaster, she will rarely see the light of day, and there are no facilities to allow large groups of people to watch her taxiing.

I certainly wasn’t suggesting that the Shackleton might fly next year (I wish!), I meant at some stage in the future. I seriously doubt if there will be anything much at next year’s RIAT to excite anyone other than kids and those who are new to the shiny world of aviation. We’re guessing that an F-35 might be there so that will doubtless satisfy some, whilst others (myself included) couldn’t care less. I guess the question is if there might be any “real” aeroplanes there, and I can’t think of any that would be a possibility… but wait, I haven’t heard of any progress with the Norwegian TF-104G. Hopefully it will finally fly sometime this year. Given that the CAA seemed happy to allow Sweden’s afterburning Viggen and Draken to visit us, one assumes the Starfighter could also make a return to Fairford. Now that’s something I would get out of bed for! 🙂

Or a South African Lightning 🙂

I wouldn’t know all modern fast jets look the same to me.:D Discuss.

F35B has a distinctive high back behind the cockpit, and a ‘cut out’ are under the jetpipe, to allow it to swivel.

The F-35 would be pretty damn good…

If it weren’t for the STOVL requirement f**king the design team over.

It does have some pretty decent advantages. Such as the ability to operate in weather conditions that would otherwise prohibit carrier flight operations. Offensively this is a big advantage for a carrier group, and defensively it is even more so.

The best kept secret at RIAT this year.

After the crowds had left the final departure.

Is it just me, or is that not an RAF F35? That looks to be an A model, whereas all of ours are the B variant.

If I got to the point where I stopped enjoying watching airshows, I’d find a new hobby.

Even in the 24 years I’ve been attending airshows they’ve changed dramatically. I doubt we will ever see the variety of warbirds on display as we had at Legends during the 90’s, but that doesn’t stop me enjoying the current ones for what they are. 🙂

And as for the Vulcan, I am absolutely gutted. The display yesterday was fantastic, as was the one I watched at Farnborough a few years ago. But what I will really miss is watching the many impromptu practice displays over Elvington/York that I have been treated to for the last few years. The best of which I sat and watched with 20+ of my friends from my back garden on my 30th birthday, with beer and BBQ in hand. 🙂
