Have a look here for the Departments for Transports latest rulings.

I would guess your rucksack looks a little too large.

But your not allowed sharp objects in your hand luggage ?

Tweezers aren’t considered sharp, nail scissors with blades up to 1″ long are acceptable (apparently less harmful that your bottle of water!?!).

security that failed to pick up a paid of tweezers and nail scissors

There are no restrictions on these items so they wouldn’t pick up on them.

Glad you liked BA. Always good to hear.

    the middle luggage rack removed,

Not removed, never there. Tristars were built either with or without centre overhead lockers depending on the wishes of the airline. I don’t think any of Caledonians Tristars had them. Can you imagine that now, with the amount of stuff everyone wants to carry? Nightmare.

Also guys don’t forget that although they looked alike (especially livery and uniforms) Caledonian Airways and British Caledonian Airways were VERY different airlines.

What would be the requirements for the exit row seats?

On BA it usually being deemed strong/adult enough to open/handle the emergency exit should the need arise,

That’s pretty much it. Specifically children, infants, elderly, disabled, obese and prisoners & deportees are not allowed to occupy seats at the overwing exits. The requirement to speak English, mentioned earlier, is applied when preparing an aircraft for an emergency landing. Day to day it is preferable but not an actual requirement.

Don’t forget that the exit row seats might not recline,

That is true of a row of seats that have an overwing exit immediately behind them, so on a 737-500 the row in front of the exit won’t recline, the row at the exit will.

Enjoy your flight, I’ll be on my way to GCI from the south terminal with a group of friends at much the same time.

but don’t try to get a ‘B’ or ‘E’ seat as they are the convertible ones so are likely to be smaller

This has been discussed before. The B and E seats are not smaller, they’re just not nice because they are middle seats.

Phil, you don’t say how many people are going. If it’s just 2 try to get the front row of economy on the left hand side, as these are actually Club seats, although it does mean sitting behind the cabin divider. Other than that overwing exits are always good as long as everyone in your group meet the requirements for sitting there.

Don’t remember seeing an Iberia A300, but do recall the once weekly Iberia 747 service to the Canaries.

I went to TFS on holiday with a mate and his family. (About 1983?) We were meant to fly on an Iberia 747, but the A300 turned up. Gutted!

It can safely be said that they were going into Heathrow. The approaches for the other London airport don’t go anywhere near the centre of London. (except City but they don’t get too many 747’s or 340’s).

I’ll tell you what i did see im sure i saw jet2s latest 757 turning aswell for approach. G-LASD i think

    I don’t think it’s too likely that you saw G-LSAD. Perhaps a Turkish 321?

    Depends what you consider cheap.

    BA from LHR is £289.40 return (inc £52.40 of taxes) o/b BA344 23Aug i/b BA341 27Aug.

Considering it’s peak season, bank holiday weekend and booking less than a week in advance I don’t think that’s too bad.

    So many points…

Only time he shows his face is when theres a chance for some promotion!!

    True.

I can’t really criticise the Government for doing what they consider to be right

    Correct.

    BAA are a shambles

    Absolutely.

Compensation…sorry me old mukka, we dont do compensation (ring any bells??)

    LMAO!

We have to accept those risks

Sorry, no, we have to minimise those risks. With all due respect 9/11 was able to happen because the American people felt that “accepting those risks” was preferable to having security checks and airside restrictions that infringed freedom of movement.

there was a time when hand-baggage was exactly that, “items you required during the flight”

    As it should be now.

If restrictions aren’t lifted within seven days I’ll sue the UK government

I’d like to see him try. (OK maybe he didn’t actually POST that!)

The government should, and will, impose whatever measures it sees fit, whether we think they are knee-jerk or not. To my mind the issue here is that the BAA and other airport operators should be able to implement said measures quickly and efficiently, and the BAA clearly could not. It is the BAA who have problems to solve and lessons to learn, with government help if necessary.

I’d be throwing ‘Mr-I’m-Very-Important’ out of the emergency exit complete with his carry-on bag, overcoat, suit carrier, briefcase, laptop bag and duty-free :diablo:

LMAO. Often tempted, haven’t done it. Yet!

But is it really a job you want to be doing at 50+ ?

That’s an interesting point. I work with crew up to the age of 60. Without a doubt it’s a job that keeps you young at heart, and almost without exception I would consider my colleagues over the age of 50 to be the best I work with.

So if it’s what you want and you are physically capable, why not?
