I think its a chemical reaction due to UV.
To prevent it – paint the perspex as the yanks in arizona do, keep it out of the sun by fitting covers or even better in a hangar.
I’ve known some slight cases being polished out with micromesh since it happens to the top surface first.
Please stop finding a ‘home’ for this aircraft. You may be jepardising the plans which are being formed.
The two good engines, are they that bad??
in a word, yes. Just remember that the vast majority of the corrosion has not been touched since she landed. The accessories are in excellent condition, but the engine spool itself is pretty much knackered. I’ll leave the guys to explain more as and when they find problems. To be honest, the engines are only good as ballast in such a static airframe. Perhaps when 28V DC is applied and a few of the systems are flashed up, things might improve. In the next 12 months, there will be a comprehensive electrical test done on the AAPP, visual inspections, etc.
By the way – I’ll make those two spine panels on wednesday…….honest!
Scott, I was referring to the panel forward of that, the larger one. Nice bird’s nest! The corrosion in the intakes looks nasty!! Has that been added to the 100s of repairs to do list? I wonder if it would have been so bad if her intake covers had stayed in place and also if the adapters for the engines were still fitted?
Peter, the intake covers have always been fitted, but they are not great – water still gets in. Bare in mind that any puddles of collected water were not regularly emptied. The adaptors have probably saved the engines where they have been removed. The water tracks into the engine intake, over the adaptors and collects in the engines. Two of the engines are like this and have siezed. The other two have the adaptors removed and the compressor still rotates. The corrosion in the intake itself looks worse than it is, but the engines themselves are nasty….
Any news on the Lightning’s status or future?
Begs the question as to whether she couldn’t simply be towed to Scampton – surely the roads are wide enough and if it was done at night with a police escort, it ain’t that far…
Mind you, it’s probably worth establishing what Scampton’s future is first. Given that the Red Arrows are definitely moving-out sooner or later, one has to wonder whether HHA will be able to survive there on their own, and if they go, there’s not much point in moving a Lightning from one abandoned airfield to another!
Just a thought – why don’t you contact the guys who look after her to see what their long term hopes are?……. Don’t write off the aeroplane before they say so. ๐
Looks like a link panel to me!:)
certainly close….

The C3 is the closest, but still not quite right.
former NEAM balliol cockpit section is now at millom. very ‘frilly’ condition….
Looking good! Question, actually I think I asked John this but are the throttle levers seized full on?
No 3 & 4 rods are seized somewhere behind the rear crew position stbd side.
Grant – good update on the wheels……;)
Contact Will Jarman at http://www.classicflight.com
he is the PR guy at the flight and should be able to produce something suitable
From the Telegraph obituary:
Quite a โcharacterโ from the sounds of it. ๐
It was the young ladies he acquired the services of in exchange for a tin of corned beef……. that made me chuckle
They’re wheels mate…… have you guys learned nothing?….;)
I BELIEVE that they had to get one specially made…. at a high cost.
By the way, whatever happened to the NEAM thread, since it is a NEAM aircraft?…………
‘Sticky keys’ can be remidied – see the thread on PRC removal…..:D
Chin up mate!
I’ve never been to Millom, but I believe they are doing a good job by rescuing these airframes which are at significant risk, ON CONDITION that they do not turn into a non-public hoard…… As it stands, their policy seems to cover their aircraft acquisitions, and after all, why not collect anything they can for now? The supply of old aeroplanes is rapidly running out, and prices are escalating. Perhaps other museums should talk to Millom about loan deals, transfers, etc, instead of worrying about what they are doing.
Well done to Millom. Keep going!
What you need to ask for is PR1422 B1/2 or A1/2. Depends on the drying time (B1/2 takes longer to set, but is a much better compound). Its a two part mix – if you get it in a tub, be warned, you’ll be stirring it for hours! If you manage to get it in the semkit its a much better way of applying, just don’t accidently unscrew the plunger while you are mixing… pump the plunger and twist it clockwise while you are doing it. It should usually take about 10 minutes of hard graft to get the stuff mixed properly…. oh, and wear gloves. Its nasty stuff…… stinks too….:D
Light Aero (LAS) sell it. Thats your sealant anyway…
To remove it, I echo what has been said before – MEK or Trichloroethane (Trike) – both of which will kill you horribly – and a non-metallic scraper… oh and alot of time….
