I cannot help you Andrew, but reading your post reminds me that I still need to look up my old ATC log book to find out the serials for the two Chippies I flew in at summer camp RAF Brawdy 76. I was also lucky enough to get a seat on a visiting Hastings. Having strapped in with another 18 cadets we waited in anticipation as one after the other the engines roared into life until number four was tried. Despite all attempts over 30 minutes it failed to start, all 18 cadets left the aircraft feeling terribly disappointed. Because we failed to get airborne the serial was not logged, is she a survivor? I managed a flight in the stations ASR Whirlwind as compensation, it put me off rotary flying machines for life!
Great news indeed, a fine looking machine, one that is much awaited in the sky regardless of final scheme. With all this Percival activity in East Anglia its time I posted an update on Proctor 3 and her rebuild, watch this space.
Mew Gull and Comet for classic racer formation next year……fingers crossed.
Slicer please add the new build Mew along with the Biggin Vega Gull, now that would be something very special!!
Snoopy, we are going as fast as we can to swell the numbers of wooden Percival’s here in blighty! Our group have decided Proctor 3 LZ791 (the lead project) will appear exactly as she did in 1943 when with the ATA at Thame. We have an original D/F loop for the cabin roof with newly moulded clear perspex teardrop blister cover. All original Percival drawings are available showing the exact camouflage pattern she used, stencil positions etc.
Original Broxbourne signatures will be re instated on the airframe, our aim is to have the aeroplane as close as possible to service condition possible.Good news is that she will be a regular visitor to Old Warden, we may consider basing her there. I am thinking of obtaining a display authorisation, the alternative is to allow Shuttleworth pilots to display her at events if so desired. A separate post will follow soon with an update on the rebuild.
David, replica, new build, tribute, call it what you like its just so gratifying that these wonderful designs are being either rebuilt or recreated. I like the term tribute as opposed to replica, Davids machine is as close to a factory built Mew as is possible and were Percival still alive I would like to think he would have given it a late production number. With the various projects in hand around the UK, two x Comet racers, Percival Q6, at least four Proctors, Miles types and others, the future for classic British types has rarely looked as good as it does now. There is a serious possibility within a decade we will see these projects completed with the opportunity to see them all together on Old Wardens turf. As for a formation fly past, please this is an absolute must.
Great news indeed and an excellent decision. I wonder if they now regret letting the Percival Gull go!
Any chance please to those who pull strings and arrange shows at Old Warden of EXF along with David Beales new build Mew Gull and the Comet racer appearing together in 2014?
Thinking about it please add privately owned Percival Vega Gull EZJ to the formation!
Another Mew
With all the interest here I am surprised that one has mentioned the latest Mew Gull to fly! Its not for me to provide photos etc, the aircraft has I believe been pictured in both Flypast and Aeroplane Monthly.
I have yet to see her for real, but I know she is going to be a very special machine in the circuit next year, faithful to the original design. My interest apart from seeing another wooden Percival airborne is that even though its only a small part, we were able to supply an original spade grip which adorns the cockpit. Proctor 3 KEX arrived from Sweden with two spades fitted and a spare sitting in the luggage compartment.
Lets hope EXF and EKL can be paired at Old Warden,Duxford or anywhere for that matter in 2104 a tantalizing prospect.
The aircraft was built for an America customer & flew on experimental licence over there. Although the aircraft was built to a very high standard in England it does not have required amount of paper work to satisfy CAA . This is the reason when she was fully assembled in UK that only ground running was allowed & not flight testing. It would be fantastic to see this in the skies over england because europe is the right place for these aircraft (or russia)! Also Airframe Assemblies had a major input in getting this aircraft back in the air along with Craig at Charlston aviation.
Steve”P”
Mackerel, not being an expert on the why they can or cannot fly in UK airspace and CAA regs, if for instance the 109 found a European owner would it like the FW190 be allowed to attend an airshow here? If not presumably she could venture from Europe as far as our Territorial waters extend (presume mid channel)?
Now I would drop everything to see that aircraft with an early Hurricane and Mk 1 Spitfire flying along the Kent coast, one can dream!!
Yes Please!
surprised at this news, after all the expense, waiting and delight at her long awaited return to flight 2012! If this is true lets really hope that she does indeed come to England. I can’t think of another type that would be so well received. What price for a zero timed better then new airworthy Mosquito?????
Hi Bob T, I dont know is the answer. What I do know is that our copies came from the antipodes where a complete set had been sent. Supposedly the British copies were all burnt at the time Hunting took over Percival
aircraft and possibly by Percival himself! Like most old paper products how good they would be today is anyone’s guess. Possibly discernible still but very fragile. Those from down under have been painstakingly scanned (years of work for one man) and should now they are on CD last for decades. As previously mentioned we print from CD to the size required for our purposes.
Proctor Drawings
We are fortunate to have between 65-75% of Percival Proctor drawings Marks 1-3 all on CD. In addition there are around 35-40% of the Mk 4 and V drawings together with a reasonable amount of the pre war Gull series aircraft. It would take months and months to go through each file and sporadic dipping into the discs reveals all manner of treasures! All military markings including RAF and Navy Proctor variants are covered these include exact placement and size of stencils, colours etc. Having these drawings has saved us hours of time with the rebuilds. Drawings as required are selected then printed onto a washable white laminated pvc usually to 1200 x 610 mm size, bigger or smaller as required. These can be marked as required with a non permanent marker pen for reference, wiped clean, rolled and stored for future reference. I have to say having studied at length a good number of these drawings they are in themselves a work of art and testament to the skill of the draughtsmen of the late 1930’s pre CAD and internet!
Thank You very much, mr Consul, for fast answer !
I think, You have this book. Can I ask more questions ?
What about civil Percival Proctor planes, registered probably in Iraq, Greece, Burma, Hong Kong, Malaya/Singapore and Morocco ?
Consul has answered as I would have. I am not aware of any Proctor Marks registered in these countries apart from possibly either Irag or Iran which I think had a number of civil Mk V’s post war.
There is a possibility of French Morocco also, I would need to check my books to be absolutely certain. India had and still has a dilapidated Mk 4 or V in store which seems to have suffered terminal termite damage!
Send me a pm Avion I have email, tel, and address details for Mike. Sure he wont mind me divulging, It was Mike who sold my father Proctor V GTC in 63! Mike was across to the Proctor workshop last year to see progress.
Thanks to all for another enjoyable day. Again I was able to pick up bits and pieces for Proctor 3 KEX which will all be bolted into place at the appropriate time. A friend bought along a Proctor cabin door, it and its opposite number came with his Vega Gull project recently arrived from Oz.The door will provide templates for the curved top perspex. I just managed to get it into the Warrrior and fly it home to Oakley. The first time that door has been aloft for over 50 years!
Not at Oakley but she would be in good company if she was! I dropped into Seething a few weeks ago to see her and talk with Rex who is rebuilding this lovely aeroplane. Make no mistake this project is a huge under taking, it will take time. Proctor rebuild update will be posted in the next fortnight lots happening!
