Well at the risk of boring everyone to death. I saw the first one up close on the ground at Filton yesterday. It had A380 on the tail fin(so would it be the demonstrator?) It was parked up by the A38 to Cribbs link road. I did not realise just how big this thing is until a couple of people strolled past the undercarriage to give it scale. I am sorry I did not have the presence of mind to note its registration.
Wasn’t the Clive Du Cros prototype Spitty replica full size, using a Jaguar V12 engine?
Mr google says
Well Jim, no one in any part of Bristol or South Glos that I visited on Friday or Saturday was collecting for Wings Day and also no boxes or tins in the shops either.:(
So this year my money will carry forward to HFH.

No the damn place was always shut when i was in the area! I was lucky enough to get a flight in one though in the 60.s when it was on an air test at Luton.
I think the Connie should be at the top of the list. IMO the most graceful prop drven airliner ever built!
Thankyou for the pictures as sad as they were.
Thankyou Bruce I could not see how you could reduce the fusalage length without turning it into something resembling a GeeBee Racer. The sad photos I have seen did not indicate such a modification.
Our wonderfull sensational Sky News are now reporting nine dead.I have posted a link at the end of the post but seriously I would not bother with it
The one quote that did make me think was
“In a June video posted at the website for the air race, Leeward said The Galloping Ghost raced from 1946 to 1950 in the Cleveland Air Races.
He said his crew cut 10ft off the plane’s length and made other modifications to improve its aerodynamic abilities and reach speeds of 500mph.”
Is this likely to be correct(noting the source)?
Sorry my posts seem to pose more questions than answers as usual.
Link to Sky News quoting this but as I say it contains footage that is best left unseen!
Thanks for the full and informative replies folks!:)
RIP to all those that have died and my condolences to their relatives and loved ones. I hope the death toll does not rise further and those injured recover quickly.I also hope those who witnessed this horror can also put it behind them as soon as possible
I am not going to speculate on the cause of the accident.
The only comments I would add is I did hear on one news report is that four pilots have died during this event between 2007-9.
If this is the case I think the powers that be should seriously consider the future of this event.
I think the age of the pilot is irrelevant he was either fit to fly or not and I am sure at his age he must have passed a very stringent medical.
Thankyou Comrade Mark!:D
Well today in my local Tesco superstore,no flag sellers and no charity collections of any sort. The local ATC usually turn out in force all over the place on Saturday so I will see what transpires this year.
