    OMG!

    http://military.china.com/zh_cn/bbs/11018441/20050202/12098899.html

if this is real, then it is quite possibly the most important J10 finds in years!

the picture posted is useless (unless someone here have some extremely good image processing software), but the clip, however breif does show the distinctive J10 chin intake. no way could that be just a Q5 as some have suggested.

this would also have some pretty major implications about the J10’s combat potential, as it suggest that AA weapons intergration is complete and that AG weapons intergration is taking place (and quite far down the line at that), if it hasnt already been done.

I won’t push it that far yet. Firing a simple rocket is an easy task. The important thing is to determine what sort of ordinance is being fired. Is it a tv guided missiles? It looks to me it’s firing unguided rockets.

Every plane is capable of emergency Gs. Even the Su-27. But they don’t encourage that so they don’t put that in the manual.

Doing 9Gs every pilot risks blacking out and therefore his own life and that of his co officer if the plane is a dual seater. You also risk damaging the airframe of an extremely expensive investment. Unless they are specifically allowed to do this for that exercise, people should not be doing 9G maneuvers, and people who do them under unappropriate circumstances should have their career options reexamined by their CO.

I guess it is another FAC. They, like the Songs, appear to being churned out like Big Macs.

Does not sound normal. I honestly don’t know why.

The Su-27 is aerodynamically “tuned” to attain the highest levels of agility at low to medium transonic speeds. These are speeds considered to represent the region where most air combat take place, at least for the Russian perception of such. To add to that, the wings appear high aspect, which gives better agility at low speeds at the expense of drag in the higher speeds.

Yes it is interesting. It is however, not surprising or remotely disappointing. G ratings are overrated and often misused by fans. Most aerial fights take place between 5 to 7G anyway. At what speed is the highest turn rates achieved, that’s what is important to know.

Depends how Russia is irritated with the US. Increasingly so everyday.

Nothing much on those fishbone arrays. Looks like UHF/VHF radar.

To make it simply for you, let’s start with this.

The YJ-83 aka known as the C-803 in some quarters, is currently the standard PLAN antiship weapon today. Not only it equips ships but also planes like the JH-7/7A. It’s also possible that the weapon has superceded the YJ-82 for submarine use.

The Kraken is an old weapon. Sooner or later that’s going to be obsoleted by the YJ-63, which is meant to be a cruise missiles, likely to be supersonic, with even greater range than the YJ-83. It was shown in a mockup form under a mockup JH-7 before. According to Hui Tong’s site, and boosted by some pictures, the YJ-63 is operational with a new variant of the H-6.

YJ-12 is a ramjet supersonic missile that seems like the Chinese equivalent to the Kh-31. With the Kh-31P being licensed manufactured as the YJ-91, the status of the YJ-12 is unclear.

The missiles on board the 052C destroyers remain a mystery. Personally I believe it’s a large supersonic ramjet antiship missile that has yet to be revealed, sort of a Chinese version of the Moskit.

The really important Chinese AshM that you should be concerned about is the YJ-83, which arms most of the PLAN ships except for the 052C (older ships have upgraded or will be to using this weapon). We’re waiting for more information on the 052C AshMs.

Yes. It’s possible. What you do with your own designs is your own business. You just don’t go around selling it to other people.

The Kh-22 and the Kh-15 isn’t for sale. It is against the MTCR treaty that Russia signed. No way Jose you can sell a missile with a range in excess of 300km.

While I have your ear, let me ask you this. When do you think China will deploy some prototype of the J-12? Thanks

If it’s flying, not for a while. At least not before 2010. That’s my opinion.

Knock out US airbases, know out the US’ ability to intervene in the Taiwan Strait.

You can’t knock out a US base with just one strike. It’s going to take way too much bombing to take one out. You have better luck with a US carrier strike group. No matter how tough the defenses are, a few lucky hits can disable the carrier.

Let me ask you another question. (I have seen some of your posts on other BBS and it was very impressive, which is why I direct my questions specifically at you. 😉 ) Do you think that the US could somehow get its F-22 to do a constant combat air patrol over the Taiwan Strait (with inflight refeuling)?

    Certainly.

It would need Flanker escorts and then it could drop cruise missiles.

Why not just let the Flankers carry the cruise missiles themselves.

Let’s say, like a Kh-41 Moskit (air launched version of the Sunburn)? Or how about the Kh-59MK?

Shouldn’t China start working on that, even if it has to build its own?

Yes but apparently it seems China does have a project at work with Xian AC. Just call it H-X for now.

Another question for you. If US carriers go behind Taiwan and intervene in the Taiwan Strait (in a war scenario) do you think the Tu-16 can hit them?

If the carrier group is stupid enough to get close to the mainland, yes, a group of Tu-16s launching long range anti ship cruise missiles can hit the group. If not the carrier, then it can take out some of the escorts. The key lies in the missiles having the range for such. But I doubt that the H-6 is being tasked for this. Instead, look to seeing more Su-30MK2/MK3 and JH-7A.

Also there is a possibility that the Su-27s and J-11Bs can be upgraded to carry antiship missiles. For example, China can use the Su-27SM package and upgrade all the older Su-27s so they could fire Russian AshMs like the Kh-59MK and Kh-41. The SM package is easier to upgrade on an existing plane since it would not require total replacement of the radar as you would with the Chinese package. The new build J-11Bs for instance, can be upgraded and integrated to use the YJ-83 missiles like the JH-7A, using a Chinese radar.

If you go down the list, J-8IIs can also be upgraded to fire the YJ-83. So can the J-10. Both planes can potentially carry four YJ-83s along with a center fuel tank. Or two YJ-83s with two winged tanks.

Just with upgrading, you can spend a lot less money and yet have a lot greater firepower. I think it’s a more efficient use of exisiting resources, and this is the route I think the PLA will take in the short run.

What do you think is China’s best move for something to replace Tu-16? The new speculation on the Chinese version of Su-32?

They could buy the Su-32 itself or make something similar. Variable wing is simply a no go for the Chinese due to its maintenance complexity. Just remember that the Chinese cancelled all their VG projects.

But if China isn’t building a lot of these planes, they are better off just buying from the Russians.

Best course for the Chinese is to develop a stealthy fighter bomber, using two WS-10A engines as a standpoint. The plane will have fixed wings and twin canted rudders. The plane should double also as a Flanker and Su-30 replacement.

I think about that bomber in terms of the size of the missile it can carry and the range it can hit out to. I see this as valuable as an attack on US carrier groups or on dropping cruise missiles that could hit Guam. Granted these I can only imagine the US will eventually deploy to Guam). However, China has to eventually develop this kind of bomber. It’s like a rung on a ladder, or a step on a path. One has to pass that point some time.

I do think China needs something with more range than Su-30MK2 and something with a more powerful and longer range missile than Krypton.

What makes you think they would attack Guam? China’s more immediate targets would be to strike Taiwan which is much closer. Backfires heading to Guam would have been intercepted, and the damage you could would only be so little. Su-30s are in a much better position to protect themselves.

I don’t see anything on the Tu-22M3 that could refute AEGIS or carrier aerial escorts, with Super Hornets with AMRAAMs, much like Tomcats with Phoenixes.

China might need something bigger than the Krypton, but the Russians would never sell anything with a range of over 300km. This is due to the treaties they themselves have signed.

Also another thing is that the PLA is rightly concentrating on greater numbers of fewer planes types, rather than dispersing its shock effectivity by having too many different plane types. Better to have a lot more squads of Su-30s or similarly classed aircraft than having a few Backfires.

H-X just has two more hardpoints than Tu-16, with some upgraded avionics maybe? From an economic standpoint prioritizing something like J-12 or fighters this could make sense. However, Tu-16 seems to me to be slow, and is a smaller bomber, which means that it can carry weapons will less range, which means it has to get closer to its target, decreasing the chance of accomplishing its mission.

Simply going with stealthy fighter bombers e.g. like the J-12 would be so much better.

The H-6 is just a cruise missile platform now. It has no need to get closer to the target.

The factory also says the same thing too.

Naturally, if you want the more powerful engine, they will make you pay more for it and they would likely give it a new designation. AL-31FPM, for example. That’s really a lot more consistent to how we observe the Russians work. They want as much of your money as you know.
