OK thanks for that – I’ve found an image on the web and yes I now recall the yellow colour of the undersides.
Before visiting St Mawgan I spent 2 weeks at Yeovilton during which time I had 10 sorties in the Hunter T birds at FRADU.
My 2 weeks also co-incided with the Air Day and I hosted a visiting F-14 crew who were mighty impressed with the local scrumpy! They sent a F-14, an A-6 and a Viking. The F-14 damaged a wheel on landing and they flew out a replacement wheel in a Greyhound(?) COD from (I think) Sigonella. It too went tech on arrival as did the Viking as I was invited to sit in it for a ground run.
These were quite exotic visitors to the UK at the time? Can’t recall the carrier they were from.
The 3 USN a/c were in the static only but recall a “spirited” departure by the F-14 a few days after the show when all the others had gone. It was quite surreal with the F-14 parked forlornly on the pan with everyday helo stuff going on around it!

    Apologies for thread drift!

Whilst “holding” between Pilot training courses in Summer 1978 I spent a week at StMawgan and flew on a Canberra sortie.
I have no record of the serial/type as it was pax flying so logbook entry is optional, but recall it could be something to do with target towing??
We were due to formate with an AEW Shackleton over the Scillies but the old Shack went tech!

Can anyone supply details and/or pictures of the varient of Canberra I flew in?

    Fascinating thread?

It has to be the Observers series, together with Air Pictorial and later Aircraft Illustrated. I still have about 10 Observers going back to mid 50’s and I have the Vol 1 Edition 1 of AI.

The “heavy” tomes such as Janes were beyond reach but I spent hours looking through them at the Library. Also I freqently borrowed a bound collection of B & W aircraft photographs -mainly air to air – by Charles E Brown. Stunning images of 1950’s British aviation. Works of art.

One of my most cherished books is “Supersonic Aircraft” by Roy Cross. No publishing date but would place it about 1960?
Landscape format -red cover with painting of Fairey Delta 2.

I’ve yet to find another example of this book- anyone know it?

Dr Strangelove…thanks for the youtube link. Nice images. There is something so immediately recognisable about the landscaspe of the Lizard.
    Any idea of its vintage?
    I would place it early/mid 80’s?

Here is a quirky aviation story….

When at Culdrose in 79 the US space sation was due to enter orbit and break up with a potential to rain down fragements on us lot below. Someone in the Government took this (tiny) threat so seriously that on the doom laden day ALL aircraft from CU had to be airborne ( or hangared) away from base for a time window when the craft was due above SW England. Most of the Gazelles de-camped to Predannack and at the appointed time flew off on “jollys” until the all clear was sounded.
I recall quite big bits of the station fell on outback in Australia??

Spent my first SUAS Summer Camp at Swinderby 1975.
Not long after my first solo at Hamble so I hammered the circuit for hours before being let loose on my first flight out of sight of the airfield. 🙂
These images evoke those far off happy times . . . and yes the sun was shining for the whole two weeks.

May jog someones memory but during our camp a Chipmunk was involved in a fatal accident down the road at Newark. Anymore info available on that?

I flew XX516 on eight occasions as a student pilot with the Royal Navy EFTS at Leeming between Oct 1978 and March 1979.

The unit CO was Lt Cdr Lamb and it is his name on the side of the aircraft in the photo.

However…..I can only assume the Bulldog Team was formed after I moved on to 705 NAS at Culdrose to fly the Gazelle. It was prabably formed with QFI’s from RNEFTS and CFS who were resident at Leeming in the late 70’s

I am a current PPL and would love the opportunity to fly a Bulldog again……hint to your friend 😀

Very interesting article about the Beverley crash.
Abingdon is my hometown and although only 2 at the time of the crash, I was very much aware of it during my youth and frequently passed the crash site on the northern outskirts of Drayton. This is the first time I have seen images of it.
The accident was the result of a wrongly fitted fuel valve causing fuel starvation shortly after departure. I believe the aircraft was bound for Cyprus?
The Hastings accident referred to has more direct resonance for me and it had a devastating effect upon the local people. I understand for many years it was the largest single loss of life involving an RAF aircraft in peacetime.
That one resulted from loss of control following an elevator falling off due to fatigue.

    Just taxying…………

The last Lightning shot prompted me to post this…

Can someone please provide a summary of where one can see non-airworthy aircraft taken out on fast taxi exhibitions in the UK?

    Thanks

    It went out 1975/76 ish.?

Served to motivate me to Fly Navy…….rotary not catapults 😮 though…joined in 77.

    RN Chipmunks at Plymouth

I flew the Chipmunk on my Flying Grading course at Plymouth Airport in April May 1978.

This course was at the end of the RN pilots 2 trems at BRNC Dartmouth and I flew approx 13 hours, including a solo flight in the Chippie.

We were bussed each day from Dartmouth to Plymouth.

    I flew solo in WB575 and also flew WK634, WP856 & WP801.

After the Chippie we went on to EFTS at Leeming to do approx 80 hours in the Bulldog, then 705 NAS Gazelles.

Great fun the Chipmunk, and the current Pilot article is most interesting.

Many of us in 78 came from a Bulldog UAS background and found it pure delight to fly the “previous” generation aircraft. Some on our course were however genuine AB INITIO and the Chipmunk was thus a bit of a handful!

When did the RN dispense with Flying Grading? What has become of the aircraft I personally flew?

    Help solve a mystery???

This thread is also running on Pprune where it has received some interesting responses. But the mystery still remains.
I have had Off forum discussions and the conclusion is that the Heron pleasure flight MAY not have been at the 50th event at Abingdon (although I was there) but COULD have been at the Batle of Britain Show at Abingdon in Septemebr 1967. For reasons I won’t elaborate on now , it could ONLY have been ONE or the OTHER !!!

    Can anyone please help…..???

The reason for starting the original thread is to find the Reg of the Heron as I am collecting images of significant a/c for me personally eg First flight, fisrt fixed wing solo, first helicopter solo etc etc.

    Yours in anticipation

Will it be necessary to test the function on the brake parachute before first flight?
Or is this only needed in less than ideal conditions?

The supplement in the current Pilot magazine (Chipmunk on cover) about the various paths to airline flying makes good reading. Don’t forget the Military route !!
