The ‘Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’ Book (published by ?).
I think this is it…

No picture though, so can’t really be sure. However it was the only one published in the eighties and Osprey sounds familiar.
For some excellent photo’s of exhaust glow and flames you must buy/borrow The ‘Battle of Britain Memorial Flight’ Book (published by ?).
IIRC the centre spread is of the then all black Hurricane LF363 ground running to some rpm with thick blue flames pouring out of the 6 exhaust stubs of the roaring Merlin! Fantastic stuff, a book full of great photos and history of the team and aircraft. Everyone should have it!
Anyone else know of this book? I’m not at home and am finding it difficult to describe, grrr… i’ll have a browse on the net. I think it was published before 1991 because, a) LF363 had not crashed and b) there is no mention of their Mk.IX Spitfire MK356.
Here goes…

Chris,The BBMF has a policy of engine and prop interchangibility to ensure continuity of operations by reducing the number of spare props & engines they need to carry. This is why you will sometimes see unusual combinations.
Thanks, i though it was something along those lines!
I cannot remember AR501 ever having three stack exhausts.

Someone was kind enough to furnish me with a copy of the infamous clip where Hanna Sr/MH434 buzzed a certain TV presenter at less than eight feet – very entertaining! 😀
Yes I am also lucky to have a copy of this on my HDD. I hear it looks much better fullscreen though! Would it be possible for a certain sconner to enable us somehow to obtain a copy of this infamous clip on VHS or a larger Res file?
Fair cop guv’na!

Yes indeed, i love the warm sound of the Hurricane with the 3 Stub exhausts like that of the Mk.V Spitfires.
Has AR501 still got its 3 stubs? I am sure the most recent photo of it i’ve seen it has gone back to 6 stubs. If so why is this?
Also, will someone please clear up the engine/propellor/stub ‘headache’ associated with the BBMF collection of fighters, that one has always confused me!
TIA
Glad to hear it!
It’s good to satisfy the needs of other fellow Spitfire Nuts!
I thought so too at first Daz, but if you visit the site you can see there are other photos of this aircraft side on showing the serial MK923.

That’s good news for all late Marque Spitfire owners who wish to add that little bit more authenticity. I wonder how much the new build exhausts will cost?
I personally would love to see MH434 returned to the state she was in during wartime, with these authentic exhausts and without the tropical filter. Perhaps with the flat sided wheels aswell!
Oh, and proper proportioned roundels!!!
Yes very much so! Thank you Bruce. 🙂
So could it have been possible for the later exhaust (tubular) to be fitted to a MK.IX e.g. for the purposes of a repair in the late part of the war?
thanks
Thanks for the update, just checking my mail, i should have this as well.
Come guys, time to put pen to paper and express our feelings why North Weald should remain as it is!
There is a New Age/Oriental composition by Vangelis called ‘Chung Kuo’ which was used a few times at West Malling when Sally B flew IIRC. It was a significant part of my childhood and only discovered the name of this track last year. Brings back a lot of memories!
great news! well done to the gentleman.
