Always enjoy seeing pics of your family and other animals Baz! The last time I was at St Mawgan on proper detachment was back in 2003. Needless to say when someone mentioned your collection a wagon load of lineys paid a visit! Impressive stuff mate.

I did visit St Mawgan again in May 2005 for Maxeval. We got there early in the morning to set up the line for the jets to land after lunch. We were working out of the HAS site and Trelloy (sp?) line. When we got the call that the jets were 20 minutes out and that the last one in was going to take the RHAG, everyone came out to watch. I remember looking towards the 12 end of the runway and seeing a fleet of caravans in one of the farmers fields, obviously enjoying a nice quiet holiday.

    Then 12 GR4’s and 8 F3’s rocked up for a party………

The field was empty within hours! Brilliant stuff! The flypast that 2 GR4’s did on departure was awesome. I asked the nav in the lead jet how high they were afterwards, he said that radalt was not in triple digits… The pilot now has two stars…..

I do very much miss St Mawgan…. 🙁

100k, perhaps a bit more. No aircraft for it to be mounted in, nor will there ever be. It’s beautiful and a historic piece, but 2m could buy you a fleet of aircraft, live and static!

    Gents.

Many thanks for your replies. M/U gunner looks to be his position. I shall be spending some time in the company of 474 leter in the year and will try and get some photos of her.

Does anyone know if Avro took photos for their records of all their Lancs as they rolled off the production lines?

I was there on det with another of the aircraft types on the pan.

2 amusing memories were watching a Nimrod taxi on to the pan infront of the assembled press, only for it to turn around infront of them creating a giant sandstorm that engulfed them all and generate huge cheers from the lineys! They bravely abandoned all their equipment and ran off to try and cough up all the sand out of their lungs! Sadly though half way through the turn the jet ran out of momentum, so the pilot opened the taps, which in turn allowed the jet blast to distribute the video cameras that had been abandoned into the desert at the side of the pan!

The second memory was watching a RAF MT driver pushing one back into it’s slot when he ran out of talent, sheared the towing arm and parked the tractor in the radome! Believe it grounded the jet for a week or two whilst a spare had to be ferried out from the UK!

I had the great pleasure of meeting Sqn Ldr B.A. “Jimmy” James MC a few years back at a Squadron reunion, he talked about his time back then for a few minutes, we could have listened for hours. He lost many friends amongst the 50, but their legend lived on through him and the other lucky ones.

Sadly he made his final escape a couple of years back.

    Never forgotten.

    Julie.

Blue steel was an air launched Nuclear Missile carried by Victors, Vulcans and possibly Valiants (not sure and waiting for someone more knowledgable!) back in the 60’s. It was Britains primary Nuclear deterrent until the Navy took over the job in the early 70’s i think with the polaris missile system.

I’m believe it was rather a snug fit to install one on a Victor as it required the aircraft to be jacked up off the ground to get enough clearance to squeeze the missile underneath it!

I’m sure some of the ex V-Force bods can explain better!
