I think that the very last job I did in the RAF was to sit at the end of the runway with Stu Hall and a test box and checked the IFF’s of those first six a/c away. Then I left the RAF on terminal leave and drove out of the gates forever. Many friends and colleagues were on the “Conveyer”
John
My old man was one of those on the Conveyer!
Fast forward some 20 years and I was doing the same point and shoot IFF checks on Tonkas in sandy places, probably with the same test equipment too!
:eek::eek::eek:
An amazing tale! Thanks for sharing it with us Newforest!
I’d certainly like to see any pics you have Rod!
Tragic news. Machines can be replaced, lives can’t. My deepest sympathy to all his freinds and family. My utter disgust to those who see fit to post photos of her in her final seconds. I hope this doesn’t mean the end of operations at Thunder City.
I printed the report out yesterday and am about half way through it, i’ve had to re-read some of it just to make sure i understood how foolish some people had been. I shall post again once i’ve got to the end, probably next week! So far i think it is very well written and doff my hat to Mr H-C
Keith.
a good set of pictures there mate! I’d agree with your comments about the size, whilst there is alot of exhibits, they don’t seem crowded in. They also have some very rare and interesting exhibits. It’s a purely donation run place, and all of the folk that work there do it for the love and nothing more. They are a great bunch of people. I turned up on a day when they weren’t even open but they still offered to show me around.
I’d like to see the Lightning get a little TLC, I believe there is something on the cards.
It’s only 25 mins up the road from me so I intend to go back this summer at some point.
Lightninglady.
I apologise for my earlier comment about 770 being tarted up just for the LPG, trust me when I say that this was meant as a joke!
I only asked 320 psi’s advice about how complete she is as he’s been in the lightning game for a long while and generally knows the status of most lightning survivors.
I’m all for her getting some attentions and look forward to seeing the results. Best of luck with your project!
Leuchars shed, circa 2006.

Apologies for the poor quality pics, taken on a camera phone in the middle of my night shift, waiting for Aircrew (as always!) to show up!
We also dont want those umarked (non serial numbered) American diplomatic Scarebus pilots taking off from gatwick, and panicking when they look down and see the canopy open and taxi lights on.. imagine it “Jeeeees, that Mig down there is covered in A’rab writing, with missiles on it”, a ton of chaff later!
I seem to remember that our septic tank amigos laid waste to a couple of ex Kuwait examples at Ali Al Craphole, again, thicker than a horse on toast, they thought they were migs of some description.
There is also the fact that should a Lightning be allowed to grace our skies once more, it would take the pi$$ out of most of the RAF’s current fleet for speed!! Typhoon perhaps being the only exception, and maybe a clean F3 with empty fuel tanks and a tailwind!
I doubt showing up the RAF is a part of the equation really!
Milt, thanks for the latest installment of you epic saga down at Gatwick! Glad to hear that you have hopefully sorted the leak out with a little time and a whole lot of PRC! It’s about the best sealant that I’ve ever used! Good to hear that you’re getting close to plumbing the engines in! Do they need much dressing? Did you get all the ancilleries with them or have you had to source the parts from elsewhere?
Good to see 5 Sqn are getting the old girl ready for the LPG’s stall at waddington airshow!! How complete is she? Obviously still got the Radar installed, is the cockpit complete? Have they got donks for her? 320psi?
Peter, I always enjoy reading about your progress with this old girl. I have a question though, all the parts you are seeking, why do you need them? Were the originals removed/stolen/damaged/corroded beyond repair? Just curious to know that’s all!
Keep up the great work!
I was under the impression that it’s still at Leuchars somewhere.
She was parked up infront of the old QRA sheds at Leuchars the last time I was on det there, that was early 2006. There was green probe tape sealing her canopies up and she looked in good condition. Managed to get a Sqn zap on her though!
Congrats on your new easter gift! I look forward to reading about your restoration. Always good to see aircraft saved!
