This is a military aviation website, right?
An air war over Egypt is an interesting concept.
The US would be facing someone it armed quite well. And as Iran proved, sanctions in themselves aren’t enough to ground an air force.
And the US hasn’t faced a semi-capable opponent since 1991.
Might not be as interesting as “my hypothetical jet is better than your hypothetical jet” though.
It’s interesting that the RMAF preferred the F/A-18E/F for long range strike over Su-30 given F/A-18E/F is far more short legged than a Su-30MKM.
Hence you’d require tankers (which from memory RMAF has two KC-130s) or loading up on external fuel tanks which cuts useful bomb load.
Or was the long range strike role something foisted onto RMAF as well?
Also doesn’t MKM have TVC?
That is wierd indeed. Would it have made more sense to buy additional Hawk 100s than MB-339s with recycled engines?
Are any of the old MB-339AM’s still operational or is the 8 strong MB-339CM the only ones operational?
Champagne at 6 pm? Make it 6 am and mix in some juicy fresh strawberries and my wife will gladly sign away our house, our child, our dog and me to buy a Rafale! :very_drunk:
From memory the RMAF also crashed quite a few Hawks as well, especially the two seater versions.
Also it still seems to me that RMAF’s problems are exacerbated by small fleet size.
If you had 36 Su-30MKM then you’d be able to pool aircraft more efficiently. Cannibalisation may be a dirty word but it’s practiced every where including leading NATO airforces.
You can also gain economies of scale in terms of spares support and maintenance contracts.
Operating 5 types in a fleet of 60-70 aircraft is very innefficient.
So any ideas on what official designation T-50 will have?
They are up to Su-48.
Thanks for the update Halloweene.
The interesting thing about French deferring Rafale deliveries again, is that it will put more pressure on Armee de l Aire in 2020s as well as potentially put the French behind in terms of capability.
So by 2020 France will have some 135 Rafales (not including 5 already lost in accidents) as well as some 90 Mirage 2000s of various models.
That will mean that in the 2020-2030 period when other larger NATO airforces (USA, Britain, Italy, Netherlands, Norway and probably Canada, Denmark and Belgium) are converting en masse to fifth generation F-35s as well as Russians adopting larger numbers of Pak Fas, the French will still be buying 4.5th generation jets.
So what happens to Rafale production line if no export orders are actually gained?
Surely a production backlog of a mere 26 aircraft in 6 years is completely unprofitable for Dassault?

Apparently operated by Army’s 50 Air Assault/Cavalry Battalion together with Z-9s and MD500s.
Excellent photos. There’s some spectacular paint jobs there.
Good to see Bulgarian Su-25s flying again.
Also was that G-2 Galeb a civilian owned one? I thought Serb air force had retired them?
South Africa actually offers Malaysia as well as Thailand a few opportunities – not only the PC-7s but JAS-39s and maybe even A-109 LUHs.
Not really.
RAH-66 Commanche got cancelled and replaced by much cheaper and much less capable UH-72. In fact same thing happened to YAH-56 Cheyenne. B-2 and F-22 procurement was also seriously curtailled.
And from a naval perspective it happened to Enterprise class carriers – 6 planned, 1 built. Other 5 were cancelled and they acquired more Kitty Hawk class .
USN has already started building new Arleigh Burkes in place of Zumwalts. Apparently they’ll probably stilll be building Arleigh Burkes (Flight IV) into the 2030s.
First flight of Mi-28UB trainer model
Also updates on orders:
– 4 delivered to Kenya (16 on order)
– Iraq has ordered 12 out of 40
– Algeria and Venezuela have signed Letters of Intent for 42 and 10 respectively. Note these aren’t a firm order.
– Russia – 63 in service, 34 on order and a further 40-60 as Letter of Intent
Great photos especially of the MiG-31. That’s a mean looking pair of jets.
We may get more than three Zumwalts. As it will be many years before the last one is completed and by time it is. The budget will likely be able to afford more of them………..Happens all the time!
It probably won’t happen as US is buying Arleigh Burke’s instead of Zumwalts.
It’s the same as Seawolf class submarine – large and super capable and super expensive. They built 3, cancelled 26 and then replaced them with smaller and cheaper Virginia class subs.
