Airline 6 is a excellent game, especially for those that can only dream of owning an airline (like myself!). I love it cause it allows you to experiment with so many different options.

I have the game and making money isn’t as easy as it looks. I have had the game for a fortnight now and set up various airlines and got nowhere (except bankruptcy) 🙁 . So if anyone has any tips etc.. please post!!

    AJ

Your right about it being difficult to make money, but it does depend on your business plan that you have to submitt before hand, don’t try anything too ambitious to begin with, start off small, and gradually expand… I started off a domestic airline from Manston (MSE) using Boeing 737’s, then expanded to into European market and eventually grew it into a large airline that served New York and Orlando on Boeing 747’s!

A couple of tips I learnt from a friend was to use a country that only has one main airport, for example, Singapore. And also pay your management staff quite a high wage (much more than market average!) because then you will not have to worry about constantly increasing their salaries, and their ‘effectiveness’ should be 100% cos they are being paid a handsome wage!

Hope this helps, and Murph, if you have any doubts, don’t – buy it now!

    hi,
just got a magazine through the post, stating:-
    “heathrow to close?”
it goes on about them closing heathrow as there is not enough space to expand. but if they did close heathrow they would build a new super hub the other side of london called thames estuary. they also stat that if this went ahead on the current heathrow site they could build 30,000 homes

I think there was a thread about this a few weeks back, but if there are any plans to close LHR (I haven’t heard anything, other than rumours or vaige reports on here!) it won’t be for a very long time…10-15 years at least. They simply won’t close Heathrow before another airport can be built. I still maintain that developers and planners should look at other airports around the world, and then consider how they can re-develop LHR to accomodate the ever increasing volume of air traffic.

i believe that this would be a silly move by the goverment:-
1- it may not be finished bu the 2012 olympic games
2- it would cause more traffic around an already congested dartford tunnel. thanks gatwick josh

Do bear in mind, it would take many years for the government and relevant authorities to agree where a new ‘super-airport’ would be built. If you consider that it took BAA 4 years to complete its application for Terminal 4 before it was built, to get permission to build an airport of equivialant size and capacity could take up to 20 years or even longer, so the 2012 Olympics will of been and long gone by then…lol.

And, traffic congestion is going to happen wherever you put a large airport, because people are not informed properly of the various public transport facilities that are avaliable…I think that an airport should be built without a car park, but have excellent pt services (buses, trains, taxis) so that it encourages people to use them. This is only my opinion, please don’t beat me up about it…! 😀

Cant Brize Noton be the next LHR?

As I said before, this was discussed in the previous thread. Can’t remember what the outcome of it was, but I am sure someone will be able to refresh our memories…

Continental use them on the EDI-EWR as it is deemed high-risk (due to the fact that the Scottish Parliament is here among other things – supposedly). Don’t know if Delta are using them on the EDI-ATL route. I’m sure there are lots of transatlantic routes from the UK where Air Marshals are used.

I was just going to say, just because the Scottish Parliament is in Edinburgh, doesn’t mean that is a need for sky marshalls, although it is potential target.

Is it mainly the American carriers that use sky marshalls, or do UK airlines use them as well…

I know this sounds harsh, but I don’t think we will ever beat terrorism now, tbh. Even if we find or kill Mr Bin Laden or other key figures of terrorist groups, it will not stop people from being radicalised into believing that they are fighting for a just cause…

One simple solution that might have an impact would be the withdrawal from Iraq, but I don’t think that that is a wise or possible move at the moment.

Well it was kinda expected, and I think they will be the better of the them all, especially as SOU is their largest hub, and also if they operate one of their new E195 on the route, when they come into service.

Just out of interest, what routes do Aurigny operate their Trislanders on, aren’t they the largest operator of that type of a/c? I have only ever seen their ATR’s before now…

Aurigny paid their Tri pilots about 25 grand before tax when I was there. At the same time a company called SkyTrek operated Tri’s out of Lydd. They paid their Captains 6 grand a year before tax and their FO’s 0 (yes, 0!).

Half the Aurigny Tri pilots are southern hemisphere guys (with lots of bush flying experience) trying to get their foot in the European aviation door while the other half tend to be Brits who can financially support themselves by other means who treat flying the Tri similar to going down to the flying club and renting an aircraft by the hour for fun.

    Interesting. Thanks for that.

Btw, SkyTrek does not exist anymore, they re-structured, and are now called Lyddair. They still operate the same services as before, but last time I looked they were trying to sell their Trislanders so they can buy some better a/c.

enough – obviously not as much as the big jet/airlines – but you mostly get to sleep in your own bed every night

btw – there are only captians with Aurigny on the Tri – single pilot IFR operation

Thanks for that, wasn’t aware there was only single pilot required…any advances on ‘enough’, anyone have any figures?

The reason I am not sure is because I am currently training to be an AutoCAD draughtsman which shows a bright future in terms of money, but I am really not enjoying the job.

To be honest, you have almost answered your own question.

Surely if you are not enjoying the job you are currently doing, why not leave and take the new position, and see where it leads, money is not everything because you can always earn more through gaining promotion throughtout a company.

And if there is the opportunity for overtime, make sure you always take it up as soon as possible.

    Hope this helps…

How much does a Trislander Captain/First Officer get paid?

I can’t imagine it being that much, seeings as it is a very small aircraft to fly, but please feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

So to clarify, can civilain airliners use military bases for commerical operations…?

Obviously it would be wrong to use the bases which see regular military aircraft operations, but for those bases that do not see as many movements it would be a great idea to use them instead of expanding current commerical airports that are already capacity constrained…

I imagine that there would have to be tighter security controls though, seeings as it is a military base.

“Brize Norton International Airport” anyone? 😉 😀

You may of notice I have deleted my previous post from this thread, the reason being is becuase I have had a change of opinion now that I have seen their website: http://www.flysilverjet.com/homepage.htm

They do look to be a professional group, and they do have some good ideas. I especially like the plans to use the private jet facilities at LTN rather than the terminal building, adds that bit more elegance to it don’t you think.

    HAND BAGGAGE:
From 5 July 2006, all customers will be able to take one standard-sized bag (maximum size of 56cm x 45cm x 25cm), plus one briefcase, laptop bag or equivalent into the cabin as hand baggage. You must be able to lift your hand baggage into the overhead locker unaided and the briefcase or laptop computer bag or equivalent must fit under the seat in front of you.

Good. At least that should prevent those passengers from taking bags with wheels on board, they are too big and bulky to be taken onboard and so people should be forced to check them in!

    CHECKED BAGGAGE
From 11 October, we will be making changes to the number of bags that you can check in. This will vary according to your class of travel and route. The maximum weight per bag will be reduced to 23kgs to comply with health and safety recommendations.

I thought the h&s recommendations were that no bag weighing over 32kgs would be accepted…has this or is this being reduced? If so, I think this could cause even more problems for passengers and delays at check-in rather than reducing them!

    EXCESS BAGGAGE
Excess baggage charges will also be standardised from 11 October. A fixed fee, dependent on the journey length, will be charged for each bag in excess of the free checked baggage allowance. In the majority of cases the new charges will be less than those currently levied and a further 20% discount will be available by pre-paying on line at ba.com”[/I]

I don’t agree, it would be much better to charge per kg imho because some people might not be over by much, yet they will still have to pay the same charge as someone who has even more than you!

For example (if the charge was £10 for a 2 hour flight!)

Person A is travelling 5kgs over the allocated weight limit would still have to pay £10, as well as Person B who might be travelling 8kgs over the weight limit, just doesn’t make economical sense!

And secondly, if a passenger (sorry, customer!), argues that he/she should not have to pay for excess, then at least you can say that for every extra kg that is taken onboard, more fuel is needed to transport the additional weight, so therefore it makes sense to charge you because it is your additional weight!

However, if you are clever (like me!), you will try to loose as much weight from your bag from the stuff that you do not bring back (i.e sun cream, tolietries, books, etc…), so therefore you won’t pay as much excess on the return journey as you do on the outbound.

Then again, I have never been charged for excess on any flight as I like to travel light. I managed to fly LHR-SFO, LAX-LHR on 12-15kgs for one week! When quizzed by the check-in agent who asked me “Your travelling light, aren’t you?”, I responded “The less you take = the less to forget/loose!” (I have a bit of a habit of forgetting/loosing things…lol!). 😀

So for all those that book online, do you they expect you to ‘pre-weigh’ your luggage on your bathroom scales to see if they are overweight?

    Monarch 747…

    I wasn’t aware that Monarch operated 747’s 😮

    Can anyone varify this?

If so, where do they operate from/to?
