Seeing as I work for the company that handles the UA flights to/from EWR @ LHR I suppose I have a unique perspective on this…
Indeed the load factors have been rather low of late, however the OP has failed to omit several key factors…
Firstly Newark (EWR) has recently been affected by two major weather systems (Hurricane Sandy and then the nor’easter snow storm!), which has led to a lot of delayed and cancelled flights, and because of this alot of people who were planning to travel to the US via EWR chose to fly via alternative routes or just cancelled their trips altogether. In order to avoid the scenes seen a few years back, we simply do not allow people to re-book at the airport…instead they are directed to the website or to call Reservations. All customers are offered a date change or a refund if they cancelled.
Secondly, I would point out that whilst the aircraft might not have that many passengers onboard, the BusinessFirst cabin has certainly been full on almost all of the flights on both the outbound and inbound flights.
Lastly, revenue is also generated from the cargo that is transported on the aircraft…I believe that UA have a contract with Royal Mail to transport mail to the USA, which is quite a valuable contract to have in place.
In terms of when the flights are the busiest, I find that first thing Monday morning and the afternoon/evening flights on Thursday, Friday and Sunday are the busiest.;)
MSR777, the IB A340 is used as a “gap-filler” in between its long-haul flights…so it flies overnight back to Madrid, then does a return LHR trip, and then departs MAD again to do another long-haul sector.
I believe BA do the same with some of the B747/777 fleet as they often operate them on short-haul routes such as to Cairo!
Some great photos there MANAIRPORTMAD!!
And a great website too…I’ve had a go at the Guess The Airline game under the “Just For Fun” bit, so look forward to hearing how many I got right, and also which ones I couldn’t quite guess.:D
Oh, and here’s a fab lolly for you…;)
Lovely photos there Andrew, thanks for sharing!
Lovely livery for COSMO…never heard of them, do you have any info about them at all?
Sad to see that Hong Kong Airlines flights didn’t last that long…that’s two operators who have now tried LGW-HKG, and both have ended up pulling out or going bankrupt (OASiS Hong Kong)…perhaps the competition from other operators at LHR (CX, BA, VS, NZ) is just too strong!:(
I was at work at LHR on the day that UA8 went into LGW, it was originally going to divert to BRU, but they changed it to LGW at the last minute. It stayed at LGW for about 2hrs and came into LHR approx 4.5hrs late…passengers seemed quite happy though, apart from those that had onward connections from LHR!
I would imagine that their HQ will be re-located to ABZ…seeing as that is where the “new” bmi regional is now based?
Is this the first scheduled B787 flight into LHR?
I believe it will be, unless any other airline is due to recieve their 787’s beforehand?
Hopefully I’ll be on the first flight to IAH on the 5th Feb…;)
Perhaps they can acquire the aircraft from the demise of WindJet?
One point though that seems bizarre, is that they will operate to Terminal 1 at Heathrow, when the rest of their flights use Terminal 3.
The reason for them operating from T1 is because T1 & T5 are the only terminals at Heathrow that have domestic arrivals facilities, and as VS would not be allowed to use T5 by BA…T1 is their only option.;)
Are these flights going to be marketed/operated as Virgin Atlantic flights, or is there a new subsidary airline being created here (i.e. Virgin UK)…?
Slight shame that they’ve chosen Manchester as a first destination, as I would have thought EDI/GLA would have been a better choice imo, but I guess MAN is a more logical choice because its the other main base outside of London that VS fly to/from, even if it is just to LAS and MCO!
I know they say in the press release that the details about the config of the aircraft will be released in due course, however I seriously hope that they consider doing something similar to Virgin America’s A319 config…8 First Class / 12 Main Cabin Select / 99 Main Cabin (http://www.seatguru.com/airlines/Virgin_America/Virgin_America_Airbus_A319.php).
Nice photo.:)
Have to say, that particular livery is far better than the “Dove” one that is on some other A319s.
To say that SRB was “not interested” is wrong tenthije, instead I would suggest that he was very much interested in aquiring the assets of BD, however he was not prepared to pay the price that LH had in mind, which is why they agreed the deal with IAG/BA last year.;)
In my personal opinion though, I was hoping/praying that SRB was successful in aquiring the assets of BD and doing just as Matt-100 suggested by launching a new “Virgin European” carrier, combined with making some changes at VS too, such as ordering new 777-300ER’s and changing its business model to be more in-line with the likes of Virgin Australia..
If the European market is to see a carrier similar to the likes of Virgin America, I think it would have to come from a brand new entrant airline.
Not at all surprised really by UA’s decision to buying Boeings…as they have been the North American launch customer for many of Boeing’s aircraft fleet from the 767-200/400ER, 777-200, 787, and they will also now become the launch customer for the new 737 MAX 9.
Nice set of photos there Keith, thanks for sharing.:)
Favourite has to be the one of G-ZAPX…not only because I love the 757, but also because I think the Titan Airways livery is one of the best ever too!
According to Wikipedia (so it might not be totally correct!), Monarch’s dates and routes are as follows:
2012
14 December – Munich (this is an interesting choice?!)
15 December – Grenoble
2013
22 March – Tenerife-South
23 March – Faro & Palma
24 March – Larnaca
25 March – Arrecife
1 May – Heraklion & Rome-Fiumicino
2 May – Antalya
3 May – Barcelona & Mahon
4 May – Dalaman
22 July – Bodrum
Not sure about the TOM aircraft moving over to MON as they also have plans for Leeds in 2013, albeit seasonal stuff:
2013
1 May – Mahon & Paphos
2 May – Ibiza
3 May – Dalaman
4 May – Rhodes
5 May – Enfidha
It says they are also serving Corfu, Palma de Mallorca, Sharm El Sheikh and Tenerife-South on a seasonal basis, but these have already commenced.
Is that it Tommy…no trip report, photos, etc…?
Hey Rob,
What a cracking bunch of photos mate, well done and thanks for sharing.:)
Particularily like the one of the Titan BAe 146 with the EK A380 in the background…should be named “Clash of the Titan-s!”, although in this instance the Titan would be running scared (I’ll get my coat!:p:o). Also, it serves to remind me just how ugly the BAe 146 looks from the rear…and yet from the front it looks quite nice, weird or what?!
And of course it would be rude of me not to mention how nice looking that UA B757 is…:D
