    Nice shots there Grey.

Just out of interest, was the United 757 being pulled onto the stand or pushed-back…seems strange if the latter considering the US A330 is not all that far behind it?

Well Jet2.com has to be able to somehow claw back the revenue that it looses from selling so many seats at “below” the true cost, so thats why you now see them charging for other things. This fee to “check-in” you mention is a scandal, and in reality the airline should not be able to charge for this because you, as a passenger, are required to check-in for a flight if you want to travel, so they are instantly making an extra £20-£40 off you for doing something you are compelled to do if you choose to travel with them…

Of course, those of the LCC lovers brigade will say “Its your choice to travel with them, so pay up!”, and rightly so…which is exactly why I choose not to travel with them and other similar airlines, because I do not believe in having to pay for something that should be covered in the cost of the overall ticket price that I pay when I book my flights.

In a very similar to the case, Ryanair in Spain have been told they are no longer allowed to charge customers in order to print a boarding pass at the airport if turn up without one because customers legally need to be in possesion of a boarding pass in order to get on the flight…FR of course had one of their usual hissy-fits, withdrew aircraft from a particular airport (Girona, I think, but I stand to be corrected?), and are now trying to dispute this ruling by taking it to the European Courts…hopefully they’ll loose!:D

So, in theory, the same could be applied to Jet2.com and their so-called “check-in” charge.

Lastly, it was officially announced at the end of March that FR were introducing a refund levy…http://www.ryanair.com/en/news/ryanair-to-introduce-eu261-compensation-levy-of-2-euro

You may not remember it now, but when he went through did the alarm make a bleeping sound or was it a long constant sound…

Bleeping sound = random security check

Long constant sound = metal or some other item detected on said person.

Ellan Vannin is the Manx name for the Isle of Man…just in case you were wondering about the name of the airline.

Would be helpful though if they actually explained this on their website because first impressions count, and at first glane I was thinking “Eh, you’re called what, why?”

I think a slightly better option would have been to call themselves EV Airways/Airlines, but I suppose that might have been seen as being too similar to other established airlines such as Eva Air of Taiwan?

Surely an E190 is too big for routes to Cambridge and Oxford, wouldn’t they be better off trying it with a Dash8 Q300/400 to begin with and then increase in size up to the E190 if it proves successful enough?!

Now you see I really like that new livery for Virgin Australia…why can’t they have the same on all their aircraft, including the Atlantic product.

Yes, he’s right to say that the idea of an airport in the Thames esturary is “absolutely nuts”, because frankly it is…however, I don’t agree with him that Heathrow, Gatwick & Stansted all need more runways.

What could/should be done in my opinion is for the money that would be used to build new runways at “London” airports, should be channelled into improving the facilities at other smaller airports such as Lydd and Manston in Kent, and also developing the public transport links to these airports in order to make them more accessible.

I also think that once Crossrail comes into use, a congestion charge fee should be implemented around Heathrow in order to help reduce the number of cars that are driven to the airport, as there is frankly no excuse for people not being able to make use of the various public transport options that are available to them.

If it is 27R for landings, Myrtle Ave defo isnt the best spot to be at…you’re better off at the roundabout near the BA hangers. This can easily be accessed by getting a bus from Hatton Cross or Central Bus Station, depending on which direction you are coming, and is also free of charge!

As for your travel arrangements, I have found out the following for the 22nd/23rd June…

Train = £152.60rtn (this includes all travel to Heathrow and back again!)

    Dep Edinburgh 23.40 (22nd)
    Arr London Euston 06.43 (23rd)

    Dep London Euston 06:43
Arr London Paddington 07:31 (this won’t take you 45mins, more like 20 mins journey time, but does depend on how smooth your connections are and how busy it is due to rush-hour, so that’s why they allow extra time!;))

    Dep London Paddington 07:40
    Arr Heathrow Terminal 5 08:01

    And on the way back…

    Dep Heathrow Terminal 5 22:27
    Arr London Paddington 22:49

    Dep London Paddington 22:49
    Arr London Euston 23:37

    Dep London Euston 23:50 (23rd)
    Arr Edinburgh 07:16 (24th)

    Plane = £188rtn (flying with bmi/BD)

    Dep EDI 06:30
    Arr LHR 08:00

    Dep LHR 21:00
    Arr 22:20

So, although the flights are more expensive, its not that much more, and as others have already suggested, the plane will take you direct to LHR and back again, whereas the train involves various stops and connections…just a thought worth taking into consideration?!

    Hope this all helps.

    Such a shame…

What impact, if any, will this have on Air Southwest’s operation…they’ve already dropped their route to/from LGW, but they also serve ABZ, ORK, DUB, GLA, GCI, JER, LBA and MAN…will all of these be simply transferred over to NQY.

EDIT: In fact, I’ve just noticed that they have announced a new route to JER and GCI from NQY.

Re the ATR it must be Aer Arrann policy, as i shot one at GLA passing area J with only one running recently.

Could it possibly be to help try to save some fuel and to help keep noise to a minimum, perhaps?

Interflug, a charge for pre-assigned seats together has existed for many years now.

Before I used to work at Heathrow, where I have been for the last 3 years, I used to work at Gatwick for a different ground handling company, and we represented a number of the major charter carriers, First Choice being one of them (they are obviously now part of Thomson!), and back then they used to charge £5 per passenger to pre-allocate seats together…of course this was/still is a nice little earner for the airline/s, because they still retain the right to move you from the seat that is pre-allocated to you (a pre-allocated seat is only a “request”, not a gaurentee, according to them!). We used to have lots of complaints from customers who had paid for this service, and were then either moved or not assigned seats together, and the airlines were unable to offer a refund at the airport, so customers were instead made to go via Customer Services (dialing an 0870 number, naturally!), and taking the cost and hassle of doing this into consideration, many people thought it was not worth it to try to claim it back.

On the flip side, Continental have a rather good system in place, which allows people to reserve premium seats online in advance or at the airport for a fee, and if for whatever reason the person is unable to sit in those seats and is moved into a standard seat, the money is then automatically refunded back to the card that the money was taken off of.
