Excellent news for both Silverjet as a company and its staff (all of which have been kept on!). For them to of stopped all operations suddenly and ground their aircraft to then come back 10 days later obviously shows how passionate Lawrence Hunt and others are that it was a worthy airline and worth saving.
Mr Hunt refused to blame the soaring oil price for the company’s problems, instead pointing the finger at bearish City analysts, who he claimed deterred people from booking.
And at least it’s a British carrier, we should have pride in having an ‘all-business class airline’, especailly seeing as the US doesnt seem to of been able to make it work with the failure of MaxJet and EOS, so lets just hope and pray that Silverjet can be made successful again, and that it doesnt fail for a second time round!
It’s just delaying the inevitable!
I don’t quite know on what basis you can say this Steve, unless you know something that we don’t? What exactly do you mean by ‘the inevitable’ as that could mean anything really?
Yes, we are able to do simultaneous parallel approaches (i.e. a/c both 5 miles out on 27L, and 5 miles out on 27R), but the aircraft need to agree to maintain visual separation with each other, and that needs to exist at all times where other separation (radar or vertical) does not, so in practice it is rarely used. To be used effectively, you’d need two separate Final Director frequencies, and the danger comes where you are pointing a/c at each other on the closing heading, with a very small time window to recover if one of them fails to capture the localiser and sails straight on.
Very interesting Gonzo, I had wondered whether this was possible, so thanks very much for the information!
With this in mind, if ‘simultaneous parallel approaches/take-off’s’ were to be introduced at LHR, would this increase the number of ‘slots’ because in effect you are having two aircraft taking off quicker than at present by using just one runway for take-off’s and the other for landings, or is it not as simple as I am thinking?
Thanks exmpa, much appreciated.:D
Can anyone answer a couple of related questions I have:
What impact does a fuel dump have on the local environment?
Is there a minimum height at which a fuel dump can take place; is this dependant on aircraft type?
That’s an interesting video cloud 9 ..thank you
Steve, just to set the record straight, the video isn’t mine, its just one I found from the website – sorry if you thought otherwise! I just happened to be browsing some videos and started to read this thread, and so looked up to see if there were any videos and found that one, but I do agree it is quite interesting to see it happen!
To see a fuel dump in progress, check out this video from Flightlevel350.com, it was filmed whilst on a Continental Airlines 767-300 flight that has to return to London to offload an ill passenger! The fuel dump doesn’t start until about 2mins into the film…
I guess thats one place to have a graveyard though they wont get much peace
At least they wont complain and try getting a stop to any further expansion of the airport though!!!:D:diablo:
Wow, some fantastic shots there BT777, the Transaero one has to be my favorite… is it a -200/-300/-400?!
Keep up the good work!:D
Nice pics there PMN, what is the Spanish registered a/c (11th pic down from top), and do you know what was it doing at LBA?
Sorry to hear about your 30D, hope it doesn’t cost too much to fix!?
Some nice pics there Bristol_Rob, the second Eastern one is my favourite.
What camera do you use out of interest?
If the market won’t bear the costs of the operation, then either the enterprise will fail, or serious cost-cutting is called for.
I think you have hit the nail on the head there TwinAisle, however, there can only be a certain amount of cost-cutting done before it will start to have an effect on the passenger experience and people’s perception of that airline, as they will simply choose to fly with another airline in the future…and with no passengers, your enterprise is also doomed to fail.
Seriously gutted about Silverjet, I was hoping to fly on them at some point, but kinda glad that I didnt make a booking as I would of lost everything. Feel especially sorry for those people on either side of the Pond that are stranded, especially as other airlines are not obliged to help them!
Hope all on board are ok.
I am afraid to be the bringer of bad news, but its just been reported that one person, a male, has died in this incident!?
Jonathan Ornstein has intentionally run his operations in a lot of cases at a significant loss trying to run other airlines out of business.
How about shutting down Go! which has done nothing but cost Mesa Air Group Million$ and Million$ since they started that operation?
You seriously don’t like Go! and/or Mesa do you!?
Your comments re service are interesting too. The few customers I have spoken to about their experience of Silverjet have actually described the service as fairly average and have all said they would stick with BA or VS rather than use Silverjet again.
1L.
Well this is the website that I use to gain an insight/feedback on how airlines are doing: http://www.airlinequality.com/Forum/silverjet.htm
Interestingly, 79 people have posted reviews, and all of them say that they would recommend them to others and say that Silverjet offers value for money.
Similar doom prophecy last January! Time will tell……
http://forum.keypublishing.co.uk/showthread.php?t=77642&highlight=SilverJet
I appreciate it might seem like another ‘doom prophecy’ to some Newforest, but at least I have provided some new and up-to-date information about their situation…;)
I must say though I think that they do offer a decent product/service. Although I have not yet had the pleasure of being able to fly with them myself, the reviews I have read speak volumes about how good they are, how those that have flown them would recommend them to others, and also the fact that they are value for money, compared to a business-class flight on other airlines (i.e. AA/BA/VS) and I think it would be a great shame to see them fail when you consider the above, especially as they are so close to securing capital from other resources, unlike other airlines that are continually focusing on reducing their own costs and hiking-up charges/fees in order to survive.
Possibly a Charter for the finals this weekend in moscow(although the teams are nothing to do with france or french avation)???
Just because Corsair is a French airline, does not prevent it from operating charter flights to/from London…my friend who went to the match (he’s a Chelsea supporter :D:diablo:) told me they flew from Luton on an Air Finland 757, so anything’s possible!
