The thing was though, alot of flights were actually just that recently 2P flights. You talk about extra charges. Who is making you pay for online check in, a bag, priority boarding, a can of Pepsi? Absolutely no one. If you can’t survive LGW-DUB without a can of pop, well…..
Ok, I apologise because I did not make this known before…I flew with FR to DUB in June for the first time, and it was just a short day-trip so I did not have to pay to check-in a bag, and I would never pay for priority boarding as I think it is pointless!
What I was trying to get across was the fact that when you click onto Ryanair’s (and many other airlines!) websites, the price that they advertise on the front page is not necessarily the total cost involved…
At present FR charge for online check-in, baggage charge and priority boarding…dont they?
2% Cloud – My **** (EGCC)
Lol. Reminds me of a statement from the movie Armeggeddon:
Well, our object collision budget allows us to track about 3% of the sky, and begging your pardon, but that’s a big-ass sky!
Dont know why…:D:p
Nice shots by the way, keep up the good work, shame about the cloud!:D:diablo:
After all how many airlines do you know who offer a return ticket to any destination they fly for 2p??
But once you add on all the additional charges, a 2p can be alot more expensive than you might first think!
When people say they want to travel for low-cost, I think what they really mean is that they want ‘value-for-money’.
The first (and unfortunatley the last!) time I flew with FR, I managed to get flights from LGW to DUB for 99p each way, but once you added on the tax, you then have to consider the credit card fee, baggage fee, online check-in fee and priority boarding fee; and then you got the horrendous charge of £1.20 for a mini-can of pepsi whilst onboard…!
The thing that annoys me most about low-cost airlines is that they even have the cheek too charge you for using a debit card! I can understand a small charge for using a credit card, but to charge you for using your own money that is in your account is scandolus. One particular lo-co I know of recently announced that they were actually lowering the card charges they levied…what they did not let on was the fact that they were now charging each passenger a fee for using a credit/debit card, even if they were travelling in a group and paying with just one card! Thus making it even worse for customers/passengers!
All I can say now is that I am glad that the Department of Fair Trading and European Commission are pressing for all airlines to include all taxes, fees and charges onto their fares…the days of the so called ‘2p flight’ are certainly numbered!
Rant over.:D
I thought they ordered ANA 744s ages ago?
How many 744’s are ANA selling?
I definatley know that OASiS Hong Kong Airlines recently got their hands on 3 of ANA’s 744’s, boosting their fleet up to 5 in total!
Daylight robbery!
I can safely say that FR will never have the satisfaction of my custom anymore – ever! But then again, who is a customer of FR anyway, you are treated as a number…a statistic; and even then they could not care less if people go elsewhere, because they know that for every 1 passenger that they loose, they will probably gain another 5 that are lured into travelling with them because they are the so called ‘low-fares’ airline of Europe!
FR vs Eurostar
FR have also gotten into a bit of bother with the Advertising Standards Authority (again!:D) because the advert claiming that its flights from London to Brussels are faster and cheaper than making the journey by Eurostar was found to be misleading because it ignored the time taken to travel from the city centre to the airport (Charleroi), which is some 28.5 miles outside of Brussels.

All of those are simply stunning shots, Paul.
First two and last one are my favourites.
Just out of interest, which 747 was it that you managed to get that lovely shot of at the end? Do you mind if I use that last image as a background image for my PC?
Is/was the Omni DC10 covering for MyTravel still/again?
It was in at LGW today (22/08/07)!:D
Wow, really interesting shots! Can I ask how you got the chance to do that, do you work for them or something?
I work for the ground handling company that handles OASiS Hong Kong Airlines at LGW. I was chatting to one of the captains on the flight deck one night before begining to board the passengers onto that evenings flight to HKG, and the Base Training Captain was up there as well; we got talking, and he said that they do training flights at Kent International Airport, and as crazy as it sounds, I just asked and he said “Of course you can!”:D
Very nice shots there Grey, the Virgin & Chav City Direct 747’s are my favourite…
Am I right to assume the 777-300ER is that of Emirates?
Thanks for all the kind comments. I was suprised by how good the pictures came out, the weather was not great and it was a tad bumpy at times!
Must’ve been a lot of fun!
Yes, it was a lot of fun indeed, although I did feel a bit giddy afterwards because we did 16 ‘touch n go’s’ one after the other…but the crew did alternate the circle pattern between landings which helped a bit.
After sitting on the flight-deck, I went to the back galley on the upper deck and had a cup of tea and a chat with one of the crew, and the next landing was really nice and smooth, but the one after was very bumpy, resulting in me spilling hot tea all down me – ouch!:o:D
And slightly more embassarasing was the fact that that evening’s flight to Hong Kong went tech (uh-oh!), resulting in all pax being HOTAC’d for the night…but I swear I had nothing to do with it. Hydraulic problem – honest!:D:diablo:
Small correction…
This isn’t quite right…
In Greece, AirSea Lines have been operating for the last couple of years from CFU to various points in the Aegean (though no flights have operated this summer, but are apparently due to resume soon) and if we cast our minds further back, there were plenty of services operated by seaplanes during the piston era.
Am I right in thinking that AirSea Lines landed one of their Twotters on the Thames sometime this year or in 2006? There was talk of them starting a couple of seaplane services from London, but no more news has come about of this. Does anyone know anything more?
Therefore FR aircraft will be operating EI flights to LHR…
I know they are only covering for EI this time, but could this be the begining of something new for FR and for LHR in the future! I assume the flights will be operated by 737-800’s(with winglets)?
Perhaps MO’L has not given up on the whole ‘take-over of Aer Lingus’ idea yet…even though it has been blocked by the EU!
Both were memorable, especially the Ketchikan flight as that had taken us to see bears. But taking the scheduled flights on a whim was special and worth far more than the cash I paid for them. If you ever find yourself in Vancouver, I can highly recommend the experience. 😀
Here, here. What a fasinating trip report egpx! And some brillant photos as well; you clearly had a great time!
I too have been on an Alaskan cruise (last year, in fact!), and did the seaplane flight from Ketchican to do bear-watching. I sat up the front with our pilot Nick for the outbound flight. The scenery was just stunning…
Did you fly with Taquan Air at all? (http://www.taquanair.com/) This was the company that I flew with, and they were great!
I never got round to doing a trip report for it in the end, so I will dig my pics out again, and post them on here if you dont mind?!
Lastly, just out of sheer interest though, when you were over in Victoria did you see Darth Vader playing the violin by any chance?
Victoria was the last stop on our cruise before we headed back to Seattle. Whilst we were there, we took a tour of the city in a horse-drawn cart and as we stopped my sister said:
“Oh look, there’s Darth Vader over there (pointing in his general direction!)”…and so we all turned to look, and then my Dad noticed he was playing the violin, and we all cracked up laughing!
I have a picture somewhere, it was bellyachingly funny at the time, I could not help but laugh – it really did make my day!
Vancouver is a truly amazing city and I would love to go back as I only spent two days there. We stayed in the Westin Bayshore hotel, which is situated right next to the harbour and just a few yards away from the seaplane terminals so we had an excellent view of them and the cruise ships!
I would definatley recommend you go to Granville Market the next time, it is really interesting!
Excellent news!
Anyone thinking/planning on flying on it anytime soon?
