    Hi,

Yes I thought i’d be diplomatic by putting A**oplane Monthly, as on other forums (relating to the r/c tank fraternity) they dont like mention of whose the other side of no-mans land.

Geoff, did you get photocopys of the article on the recovery ok ?:D

    Geoff,

Yes Dave’s correct, it is in ATB No6, I’m probably confusing it with the Gladiator wreckoverys (well it was 20+ years ago !!).

I’ll pop a photocopy in the post today to you.:D

    Geoff,

This wreckage was recovered by the same RAF sub aqua team that pulled the Gladiators out of the lake in Norway in the 70’s.

There was am article on it in an old A***plane Monthly. The rear fuselage eventually went to Colin Waterworth for use with the CASA 2-111 nose (via various other group/s), but that project was sold & moved to Europe (?).

I’m sure there were other large parts (wings ?), but i think IWM only kept the fin.

    Survivors

    Graeme,

Aside from this battered collection of parts up for auction, there is one other complete Vengence located in a private collection at Norellan,NSW and is capable of engine running. That is the aircraft you have seen featured in the past. More details are in the book ‘Vengence’ by Peter C.Smith.

    Parts at Coventry museum ?

    Elliott,

Many moons ago, i recall visiting the museum at Coventry and they had several large chunks of Whitley including fuselage sections.

Have they considered your needs or are they keeping it all for themselves ?

Perhaps its a similar situation to Elvingtons Halifax but the IWM keeping a firm hold on their nose section ?

    eh ?

First I’ve heard of it, and i live near by !

I will ring them and ask.

The squaddies did hold a small event 2 or 3 years ago, but that was the only avaition orientated event since they moved in.

    Chippenham yard

I only recently discovered the delights within Flowers yard at Chippenham (’95 – ’99), and sadly missed the final clearing & auction of the contents.

Somewhere I have the photos of the free reign I had within, but it was very risky climbing the piles of scrap.

I often wondered “just what is keeping this stuff up”, but on the ‘surface’ of the various piles could be seen remains of Swift, Beaver, Canberras, Typhoons, Spitfires,Scouts, something akin to a chunk of Varsity/Valetta, plus of course the in-famous Seahawk nose on public view from the footpath.

Deeper within I found the severed (inboard) wings and the centre/rear fuselage confirming at long last, the true serial of WV838.

I think the nose was preserved, but did any more chunks of this Seahawk or the other aircraft survive ?

    Comments please….

    Tiffies

    Hi,

Just found & joined this excellent forum.

In reply to the query about the Cerney dig in the late eighties, all parts were recovered.

Tony Agar had the useful Mossie bits, while over time, the Tiffie parts have been spirited away into private collection & projects.

Very few Tiffie main spars, but mostly cockpit fittings, corroded tube and approx 20 bulkheads.

I have one of these bulkheads spare still, having sold my Tempest cockpit project to the D-Day avaition museum.

I ‘may’ consider parting with it.
