Fear not, the catering at the FAAM is run by the museum’s trading arm and not hived off to any outside company.

It’s the best museum restaurant I’ve been in, and I actually find its hot meal prices and standards as very good.

I have a plan I hope you guys can help with

Has anyone ever seen a pic of a Mosquito in civilian livery?

I am looking for an unusual scheme for 1/24 kit (arriving tomorrow, I am in bits) and would love to do a silver/white version or something like that

It would be a heavy conversion if it is glass nosed, but hell it will take me a couple of years anyway

    Here’s hoping…

BOAC operated Mossies, but in the camo with civilian registrations and the large national stripes applied to the rear sides and wings, they seemed to have had a mix of bomber and fighter variants.

For silver painted, there were the RAF post-war PR Mossie variants in use right into the 1950s, not to mention the lovely liveried TT variants used into the ’60s at Exeter.

I still disagree, I haven’t missed anything in there, and also been able to get some really good and different photographs by taking time and trying.
At first I didn’t like the idea, preffering the normal aircraft parked in a hangar appearence and straightforward ‘record shot’ photos, but I have become impressed with the Cosford layout over the years. Having said that I wouldn’t like to see the same system extended to the whole site.
I do agree with you about the really poor positioning of barriers and warning signs (but this also extends to the conventional hangars – especially benches!), but I would think there must be a good answer to that.

The last time I visisted I was talking to some ex aircrew, including a Jav nav, and they were really impressed with the place. I think sometimes we need to view these museums through non aviation enthusiasts eyes.
That building (you’re right it isn’t a hangar) does house a really dramatic display of aircraft, and puts indoors some large types that might have been left outside.

At the end of the day, wether you like the Cosford building is a matter of opinion, but I do think DD is way off the mark by calling it a ‘disgrace’.
We are very lucky with our national museums in this country.

No, please, no….the Cold War Museum at Cosford is a disgrace, a shameful waste of public money that turns aircraft exhibits into 1/1 scale Airfix kits. The damage has been done there, the money’s been poured away and that folly will probably outlast most of the members of this Forum.

For Hendon to go the same way would be an utter tragedy. Where’s the consultation in all this? This is the premier national collection for goodness sake! Let’s hope the parlous state of the public finances puts a stop to it.

Jeepman, you’re spot on with your reference to honours by the way. It’s all about vanity and big egos….

That is your opinion DD, mine is that it is the finest collection of aircraft in the UK, with very thoughtfully presented airframes and extremely helpful staff.
I think the landmark hangar is a very clever design with good layout aswel, to be able to house a Valiant, Vulcan, Victor, Hastings, and Belfast plus numerous other types in one well lit interior and space to take pictures is no mean feat.
BTW does anyone know if Hendon is actually going to go the same way, or is this the usual reactionary kneejerk reaction?

The Brits versus Yanks is always a good debate when it comes to best aircraft.
Very generally speaking I think the British built the best quality and over engineered aircraft, but more often than not of limited or expensive appeal to customers, whereas the Americans seem to nail the requirement (civil or mil) on the head and build a product that is well suited to it, but the aircraft is built to a cost.

Hamble I reckon, I know Ensigns were assembled there and had to cross a road to get to the airfield site.

Not far off the XC-99, the Lockheed XR6V Constitution was pretty big.

    Here’s a start, http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/displaycataloguedetails.asp?CATLN=6&CATID=5030818

Note you can also look up ORBs of the various units based at a particular station aswel, DORIS at Hendon is also good for this aspect.

The TNA hold the station ORBs that have been handed over to them from the AHB, unsure about that particular station.
The TNA has a fantastic online search facility, and can copy and email requested pages within 24hrs or over a longer time. For ORBs though you are better popping along yourself to read/copy the relevant info.
This link should be handy for your search http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/browser.asp?CATLN=1&CATID=8&GPE=False&MARKER=0

Odd collection, most pics featured are stock company photographs but some real beauties tucked away in there.
Types and manufacturers a little bit mixed aswel, such as de Haviland Tudor 8 and de Haviland Hercules C.1!

Your confusion is well founded as that hangar is at RAF Kinloss not St Mawgan! It’s an ‘austerity’ C Type, non of which were built at Mawgan, indeed the only hangar used by Nimrods at Mawgan is the distinctive and almost unique ‘cantilever’ hangar 404.
Unfortunately the K.Saunders book has many critical errors in it.

Can’t wait to see a decent St Mawgan add on for flight sim, if you need help with details and pics please let me know.

BTW there was never a hangar in the area that is circled in red, not until the far more recent (2003ish?) Skybus hangar.
The one referred to by the bowser driver sounds like 405 hangar, a T.2 which was by itself on the Treloy area.

Say you pick ’68-’72 you would have 7 sqn Canberra TT.18s, 22 sqn Whirlwinds, MOTU Shackleton T.4s, 42 sqn converting from Shackleton MR.2s and 3s on to Nimrod MR.1s and 236 OCU with Nimrod MR.1s.

when will this add on be ready Mickey?

Even as a Saturn and Apollo fan, I have to completely disagree with Nic.
The Shuttle has performed amazing work on its 30 years of missions, especially connected with the already mentioned International Space Station and Hubble launch and repair etc. Its value partly lies in being a fairly spacious combined flying space laboratory and workshop, as well as a very well laid out launch platform.
It shouldn’t be forgotten just what an incredible aircraft it actually is, it is quite easy to overlook as it entered in a period where the public didn’t care anymore, and missions became relatively ‘mundane’.

I welcome back the rockets, but weirdly I find myself asking are NASA going to loose another capability here, should they have developed a new Shuttle?
