Plenty of SHAR bits at Predannack and CUs SAH, my mate drives them for a living. There’s meant to be a few airframes (inc GR.3s -one being Trans Atlantic air race) being disposed of soon.
Gutted and severly weathered GR.3 fromMawgan went for 17K 7 years ago, so this price isnt bad.
Ah, thats where the ex St Mawgan 7 Sqn Canberras ended up!
Lets hope they get that lottery grant, interesting history of the Connie!:)
Cant access the links (work!), there is a feature length documentary on TSR.2 with interviews from Bee, should be on DVD by now.
no worries, that sounds like my average day at work in air traffic!:D
Blimey, surprise to me aswel, looks more modern, in fact more modern than a Gannet panel.
I did, Bex, just wanted to add my opinions;)
Sounds like John Cooper is your man!
I would love to see any pictures you may have that show St Mawgan?
What is it then? I was thinking late swift, but not quite right:confused:
545 yes, and SR.177 was the other project I was thinking of.
Theres some fanciful talk on here! Flying and taxing TSR.2s!
Its remarkable that two survived into museums, and a nose section (Farnborough?) as it is. Many ’50s & 60s projects (Supermarine 547, Saunders Roe rocket/jet, P.1154 etc) didnt have any survivers.
The truth is nobody will ever know how good the aircraft would have been in service, it looks typically ’60s lead sled and is a massive aircraft. We might not of had the Jaguar and Tornado IDS, both manouverable and good at their job, and the RAF might not have received the Buccaneer and Phantom, if the TSR.2 made it in to service. The Vulcan and Canberra probably would’nt of remained in service for as long as they did, read 607 and imagine if the same thing could’ve have been done with TSRs.
I love the TSR.2 for what it was, and Im glad there are two nice ones to look at, and a few kits to build of it.
Sounds like ‘toss bombing’ which is more usually associated with the Bucaneer, but it wasn’t done inverted! There is a proper term for this low level technique, it aided in getting the aircraft away from the blast area as quickly as possible as it pulled up into the loop and headed off from wence it came.
Vickers Comercial type 10 surely! Or the Trident, maybe the Hermes V, erm Brittania even. No definatly the 10!
Cracking shots, especially (again) the Chinook, 747 and Spit/Hurri.
That must be the lowest a 747 has been for a while!
Ive got a bit of GANLO (Dr reckons I will get over it though!), Door repainted in original colours with pic of Cunningham and aircraft on it.
I believe both Comet sections arrived in mid ’80s, the nose and cockpit (G-ANLO) was removed in early ’90s, dont know where and wish I did, as it was fairly complete. The mid fusalage (G-ANLO or other?) was scrapped in 2000.
Ive included pics of other aircraft that were either scrapped or ended their days at Mawgan. A big clearout happened from 1999 – 2000, the Harrier was sold, Victor XL190, Shackleton WL756 and Comet section scrapped.
Edit, oh and pic of Lightning nose (can’t remember which one) in field close to Newquay.
