Reports of PM’s total demise are misleading..
Dear Race Fans,
Precious Metal is more than an airplane; she’s larger than life. You have all proven it since our ground fire incident mere hours ago. The groundswell of support is humbling. So what are our options? We could throw in the towel and move on from this tragic chapter and leave the world wondering what could have been. Or…We could, in true Team Precious Metal fashion, NEVER GIVE UP! Precious Metal does not deserve to be parted out and disappear into the history books as a failed attempt at the World’s Fastest Motor Sport. She deserves to rise out of the ashes in true Phoenix fashion and prove her worth!Everything is repairable; it’s all a matter of capital. If we can raise the necessary funding to make this happen, she will race again! Many things have to be repaired: wings, fuselage, engine, systems, cowling and last, but not least, her famous paint scheme. The Precious Metal program is run on countless hours of dedicated volunteers and a shoestring budget. This most recent set back is too much of a financial burden for the program to handle. As we know, a setback is just a setup for a comeback. Which brings us to our proposed solution.
Here’s Team Precious Metal’s offer to you, our fans and supporters:We will give you one square inch on Precious Metal for a donation of $50 towards our rebuild. We will fly your picture around the course embedded in our new paint scheme and you can be part of resurrecting one of the most iconic race planes is history. Team Precious Metal will be in Reno this year. We will have our pit and sell our team gear. Chances are we’ll provide some evening entertainment as well. Come see us there and purchase your squares! There are several ways to support our cause: through our Precious Metal gear sales, our newly invented onboard picture program, or by supporting our sponsors and purchasing their products. There’s no limit as to how many square inches you can purchase, we’ll just make your picture larger! Or submit pictures of friends, family, pets or whatever you desire. Precious Metal is the people’s racer. And with your support she will growl around the course again!Make your mark in air racing history here:https://squareup.com/market/AirRaceTeamOn a personal note, air racing has been the most rewarding experience I have ever had. Not in the form of trophies and bragging rights, but in the form of enthusiasm, excitement and dedication of the fans and crew members. It’s been a magical life experience, which I’ve been very fortunate to be a part of. We, as a team, will do whatever it takes to keep the dream alive. Please join us in making history and carrying on the legacy of the World’s Fastest Motor Sport!
Thank you for making it possible,
Thom Richard
Local museum has been evicted from their hangar. I’m trying to part them from this which originally came out of Lockheed. It may have even been made there..

Other mods (apart from the obvious windows) include removing the rear hatch & installing stairs on the port side instead. Hatch in the cockpit roof was also filled in so the only access to the top surface of the aircraft is with a ladder…altho there is no shortage of new hatches in the side of the fuselage.

Stairs are opposite this hatch

The bedroom on top of the bomb bay. As you can see the bomb bay roof was lowered to accomodate the bed etc. Top of it would nornal;ly be level with the top of the green panel to the left.

& Garth, The Airport WonderMutt. As you can see the entire interior has been trimmed out in some hideous fake bamboo/grass crap.

Correction: Had a butchers inside after the tail feathers came off today. It’s not an air tank behind the crapper (as I was informed) It’s an oxygen tank, one of the big ones similar in size to welding tanks etc.
Assume that was to keep Mr Hughes happy.
And this is what happens when you roll over a piece of 1/4in steel plate with a KC-97… 🙂

Looks like most of the damage was due to the recovery….
Few pints of Rattler…. 😉
erm….

Sounds good! What’s the plan?
The museum went **** up last month. After years of not paying rent, not filing their 501c3 charity tax paperwork & using the hangar for their own personal aircraft They were given 10 days notice that preceded a 14 days to vacate order.
The plan is the Argosy will fly out if the parts can be found. The B25 is being dismantled for shipping & the KC-97 is going to fly out too. The only thing that may look like it gets scrapped is the C119. Everything else has been moved to another location. Have to evict a few owls…. at least one in the -97 (starboard inner) & possibly two in the Argosy, one of which had set up home in the right gear bay/nacelle.
-97 did in fact move briefly on Thursday, about 12-15ft before the ramp gave way under it. I shall be wearing my Chief Blagger hat tomorrow in an attempt to borrow a few 8x4ft 1in steel plates & find a tug big enough to move the ******.
B25 is in a lot better condition than first appearances. It’s been modified so it now has 4 bomb bay doors…1 on the right & 3 on the left. Plus there’s a bathroom at the back etc & a huge air tank back behind that.
When Kermit was in the UK to buy the Sunderland etc he mentioned that “My accountants tell me I have to spend $6M a year on this stuff”
Without trying to sound nasty did you notice how almost every flying warbird was developed either because of the French or had been purchased by them before the fall? The commentary for the show was poor this year with the gentleman stopping the commentary in the morning as his phone kept ringing which he ‘must’ answer it which made me feel sorry for the man from DAS who kept having to stop while putting across about this most impotant group.
Curlyboy
Maybe it was people calling to tell him to shut up?
LOL!!! The 300 people comment was made to describe the size of the cargo bay in the space shuttle. It’s 60x15ft, so yeah, 300 people standing up will fit in it.
There’s a piece of one* sitting in the garage
*a space shuttle, not a person…
