Spoke with Pete today, he’s going to scan the restoration album onto a disc & let me know when it’s ready.
And while we’re about it, why don’t we rotate the whole of Duxford airfield through 90 degrees to improve the light for photography….
Just close a section of the M11 & use it as a runway during airshows. Sorted 🙂
That’s because you’re a cheapskate and sat outside the show! 😉
Dang right I did. Last year when I was inside the fence the day before the show I got roped into investigating a misfire on a P51 & that seemed too much like work to me so I decided not to risk it this year 🙂 & I wasn’t alone, there were probably about 150 people out there at 34°44’37.85″N 118°14’45.16″W. Apparently they were using my truck as a marker. Even had a Coyote & a Jackrabbit go blasting through our little camp.
Here’s one I took, feel free to use it. It was taken the day it set off from Van Nuys to Dayton:

As you can see the fuselage is sitting at an angle to make it narrower on the trailer (horizontal stab is still mounted). The orange contraption was hinged & the Spit was mounted level, then the left side raised with a forklift, supports fold out of the way & the entire plot laid over. It’s probably still laying around at Dayton in the weeds someplace. The flag now resides in my garage.
Local aviation themed boozer had two small placards glued to the bar. One read “This seat reserved for Gen Chuck Yeager” & the other was for Bud Anderson.
Yeager was in there one night & told the bar owner that he should pay him to use his name like that. The guy promptly chiseled the placard off the bar, threw him out of the place & banned Yeager for life.
Just remembered, I’ve got one of the original wheels laying around someplace.
Pete Regina at VNY has a photo album of the entire restoration. I’ve been asking to borrow it for years so I can scan the pics as I also worked on it. If anyone ever takes it apart again they will find my *autograph* hidden in all sorts of odd places.
I can tell you that it still has PA908 on the main spar doohicky as we refused to paint over that bit. It’s also stenciled inside in a few places that most people will never see.
I got buzzed by FiFi on Saturday 🙂
I wonder if one day a group of aviation enthusiasts will band together to buy an airfield for the nation? I can’t see it myself…
Stow Maries…
If that is the Jurca one, Bob DeFord has been operating one in Arizona for quite a few years now. It is quite a regular attendee at fly-ins and airshows on the West Coast.
There’s another one at Santa Paula. Not sure if it’s still in crates though.
You forgot Timm aircraft at VNY, Vega at Burbank. Also Hughes.
A typical example of what i’m trying to remove. Yes i can pick and scrape but not completely remove this substance. It’s very hard, almost like a calcium build up.
Bead blasting it will save a bunch of frustrating faffing about. (Faffery?)
I laughed out loud! Sounds like an Onion News story. How anyone takes stuff like this seriously beggars belief.
.. except they list their sources….. & then there is that somewhat damning issue where the symptoms of delusional schizophrenia & belief in gods are basically the same thing.. which added to the “I have a personal relation with god” being essentially the same relationship as stalkers have with the object of their harassment etc doesn’t help matters…
😉
In the US if a school bus is stopped then all other traffic has to wait until it moves off for precisely this reason.
