They’re probably reducing the station inventory as they’re liable for accounts charges on assets held. The old Combined Ops building at Wyton was demolished to reduce the charges under the same scheme.
Yep, it’s XD434, I had her sat in a hangar at Wyton when I was still in the RAF (I was joint keeper of ac at Fenland at the time). It was a ‘temporary’ arrangement which I managed to extend to 2 years:diablo:
She’s probably in need of a repaint by now and the last time I saw her she was virtually complete.
It’s a shame about the state of XS459 though as she looks a bit the worse for wear at the moment:(
Also used on the Manchester and the Botha, any pics would be great.
Cheers

oooh Don’t forget the Stirling Cees!:D
Interesting to see some pics, we’ve just got the cupola which is currently on loan to the Pathfinder Museum at Wyton.

I think Marshall’s are to blame for this. They should put in the half mill that the Vulcan needs by Friday. When the aircraft was flying to airshow’s the staff of the aircraft was geting paid and staying in 5 star hotels.Where did that money come from????
FYI MA laid out a considerable amount of money for this project which AFAIK has been waived. The contract set up allowed for MA personnel to certify any work c/o by 558s personnel but wasn’t funded for after hours or weekend work. If you know of any MA people who got 5 star treatment I’d like to know as I helped write the Tech Manuals and I got diddly squat:mad:
From my perspective a good day and good to meet up with a few of the forumites:D
I’ll be there, got a few things to deliver and a few to collect
John
Has anyone got a link to the collection? I Googled it but didn’t seem to find much:confused:
cheers
John
We have a number of Stirling/Shorts standard drawings for the cockpit area which is fortunate considering that’s where we’re concentrating our effort. Rumours of Tea chests full of drawings deposited at Duxford/RAFM have all sadly proved to be just that:(
John
If they were unexpectedly retired early with no FI on the wings, how would they have carried on to their planned retirement date?:)
John.
Perhaps a bit hasty with my quote:o
There was very little FI left on the wings and the FI had to be carefully husbanded. We spent a lot (and I mean a lot:eek:) of money developing a NDT technique to monitor one particular area of the rear wing skin and spar structure which was manufactured with a concession, ie the edge distance to one fastener was too low. This was an area where the critical crack length was 0.5mm after that the wing could unzip. Basically they were flying by inspection and it was an onerous one at that.
Hope that clarifies things a bit.
John
For Stirling repro please see here:
thanks for posting the pics, lots of big grins here!:D:D:D
No flying RAF Jags unfortunately, absolutely no FI left on the wings!
John
And make sure you’re cheques don’t bounce…..
Glad to see it’s back up and running. Well done Mark and Bruce!
Hi Mark,
New name and Logo?
From Post #1, the subscription was due this week so it’s no surprise that it’s suspended.
Reading between the lines in earlier posts, I think that Mark is taking his time to review what is actually required/wanted and then see if it can be taken forward. I’m sure that whatever the decision it won’t be taken lightly
