Allegedly, Alconbury was one of the first options to be discounted the first time round in favour of Mildenhall. For whatever reason, Alconbury and Mildenhall are not part of the equation now.
There’s a lot of other redevelopment just starting at Wyton as well around the south side behind the hangars.
The rumour I heard was MA was looking at developing the north side dispersals and old Bloodhound site for it’s use.
that would make sense as the domestic side of the airfield is being gutted to allow the JARIC compound to be built. The old Bloodhound site and dispersals is adjacent to the A141 which would make access easier too.
Front runners in the proposed move are Wyton and Waterbeach, although AFIK Waterbeach is slated to be a housing development in the future anyway. Any move is unlikely to take place in the near future though. Wyton would be best for me although it would probably mean that the Stirling Project would have to relocate ( then :()
Stirling if you please:p
Surely a Lerwick, but would anyone want to bring it back up to face the music?:diablo:
Timely question that i’d like some answers also please. The Invader is covered in pockets of corrosion small, large & huge and the ally’ is delaminating.
The underside is especially bad having been sat outdoors in water & vegetation for 20+ years. Blasting it isn’t an option due to the size, what else can i do ?
.
Have you worked out how you’re going to tackle it Dave and have you got any more photos of progress?
John
Hello Keith, as I’m not a “Pooter” person you may have to wait acouple of days before I do a thread without crashing the Forum, That bit of undercart on the last photo was off an american bomber ,but cannot remember which type. A “B” something. I know it burnt for 3 days or so as it was made of Mag Alloy.
that’d be the B29 we dug (I was keeper of aircraft with Murray Flint for a while) back in the early 90s. IIRC it made the national press as we found the personal effects of the crew and groundcrew including some trousers still on a hanger 🙂

Tony T. Interesting, but not quite what Im after (although useful!) I need that part numbers and the picture for where they go.
What parts are you after specifically? If there aren’t too many we may be able to get the relevant pics scanned.
John
This might sound an odd question, but what is the “media” that keeps being mentioned?
Will
Media is the generic term for the substrate or the actual material used to remove the corrosion/paint. It can be plastic or glass beads, grit or any of the other types mentioned above. St Athans had a purpose built facility for Plastic Media Stripping (PMS) which could paint strip an entire aircraft (Jag/Tornado etc)
Having stabilised quite a lot of Stirling Mag alloy material, I’ve always used shot blasting with plastice media, it’s a lot more gentle and still work hardens the surface structure.
Off the original topic: To be honest Dave, looking at the extent of the exfoliation to be found in the structure, I would be looking at repair by replacement. By all means stabilise the structure, but if you intend restoring it to its former glory I think you should start measuring up the structure before it deteriorates too far, then think about getting some new structure machined/folded up to make good. A lot of work I’m afraid:eek:
Would it be worth asking this question on one of the Military (Tank) forums as they would have a lot more experience with the Meteor engine.
I believe that a C Mk5 (ZH887?) has been at China Lake for some time on trials so that could fit the bill for one of the screen shots
John
Ahem! No-ones mentioned the Jag, 34 years front line service must make it worthy of inclusion:D
Try Hindenburg:)
Not forgotten:confused:……25 of the 66 still in service and for a long time yet
