I can confirm that all the italian FREMM (nobody knows how many, if 6, 8 or 10, next gov will decide) will be equipped with 16 A-50 VLS plus space for other 16 VLS.
The combat system for AAW will be the SAAM-ESD, an evolved version of the SAAM-IT that equip the Cavour with 32 A-43 VLS.

The SAAM-ESD (extended self defence) will be something in between the SAAM-IT and PAAMS: it will not have the long range radar and it will be capable of do only a limited area-defence; it’s something more than a mere self defence capability but it will not match the capabilities of a Doria DDG. Of course it can fire Aster-30.

One other thing: the EMPAR will be in the active version.

These modifications are official, and were announced by OCCAR about one year ago (september 2009).

PS: the official italian navy website is rarely updated, renderings and info you can get here for FREMM are 2-3 years old

    Hi Rick,

May I ask you more info about the italian FREMM offered to Brasil?

Meretmarine articles say that the italian FREMM will have an obsolete ‘Federated’ CMS, as opposed to a modern centralized CMS of French FREMMs.
Do you know more about that?

Three M-346 “Master” fly in formation for the first time

    5/14/2009

The Alenia Aermacchi M-346 β€œMASTER” makes its first three aircraft formation flight. The 60-minute flight was made by the two prototypes and LRIP00, representative of the series production configuration, while the M-311 aircraft acted as camera ship.
Alenia Aermacchi is proceeding with the last M-346 development activities and is fitting out the new hangar dedicated to the automated build-up and structural assembly lines for series production at a rate of 18-24 aircraft annually, which can be increased in case of specific needs.
Thanks to the extremely advanced and automated industrialization process, Alenia Aermacchi will be able to address effectively the market demand for trainers aimed at pilots of 4th and 5th generation combat aircraft.
Presently the M-346 β€œMASTER” has been chosen for a total of more than 60 aircraft and there are going to be other commercial opportunities through the participation to important international bids.

Claude GuΓ©ant, Secretary-General of l’ElyzΓ©e, declared that France had “serious hopes” to sell around 100 Rafale.:D

Did You mean to clear around 100 Rafale ?

France doesn’t want Rafale for lack of money and because Rafale has been payed too much from AdA. On the other side Dassault can’t be unsatysfied and so, now Rafale are ‘for sale’.

Buy 3 and pay 2, special offers!!!

At this stage I don’t think that the formation of a European carrier group will be that significant in the grand scheme of things but I think that there are some within the EU (including Sarkozy) that eye American military dominance with jealously. The EU is an economic power, so it should also be a military power and it needs the forces to take on these responsibilities. He hopes for a European armed forces with France at the helm.

Agree that you can be cynical though. Whatever gets proposed, the French will want to lead it, irrelevant of whether they have the flagship. They always do.

    Exactly!!!

In my view, Sarko can continue to dream and dream and dream. Just it.
Before EU will be a political and democratic entity, France and Uk will have to give up their prehistoric seats at UNSC, Germany will have to give up the dream to seat at UNSC, then there will be real EU armed forces. Since that, Nato is the only available and perfect EU military institution.

    Mick

Sorry to sound cynical but I cant imagine that this would be being raised by Sarkozy if the French were currently cutting steel for PA2.

    Cinical??
You are completely right mate!! πŸ˜‰

The problem for Sarkozy is how to mantain french navy still an asset of great power and on the meanwhile to announce to french people: ‘Sorry, due to the debts made by the former president, now we are unable to be still a great power and PA2 will be postponed in 2012, as well as Fremm will be 12 instead of 17‘.

French run out of money, because they still have to pay the bill for huge programs (Rafale, CdG, Barracuda, ecc.), legacy of a period of uncontrolled military expenditures.
Sarkozy is very smart. Uk provides an aircraft carrier, Germany the escort (although german frigates are not designed as escort for a CBG) and France provides the leadership. Probably he forgets that a united Europe doesn’t exist after the french NO to the EU constitution.

Sounds strange that Sarkozy didn’t ask the partecipation of Italian and Spanish navy, that are much more capable compared to the BundsMarine.
Sorry guys, France has been out from Nato and was proud of her military independence. Today this is no longer possible, due to the high cost of military equipment.
Chapeau a Sarkozy. He is very smart, but is not enough to call ‘mom Europe’, because they have no money to pay for PA2 and escorts πŸ˜‰

Sorry guys, but if you want to stay in the club of ‘Big Stick’ as USA, Uk and Russia is necessary to provide a true military strenght, that means You have to pay and not Europe for you πŸ˜‰

According DefenceNet.gr (in Greek only, sorry), Sarkozy during his last visit in Greece, proposed Greece to buy 25 new Rafales, in order to “replace” and not mordenize the rest 20 older M-2000E/BGMs (15 were upgraded to -5MK2 standard and 10 more were purchaced new from HAF the past decade) for about 1.75 billion Euros.
Well That’s an offer, a little bit alike with the UAE case…

The Mirage 2000-5 of HAF are still great fighter, why to spend money to replace them???

It’s not the cost, it’s the cuts. Spending has been declining steadily, so less can be bought.

    Yes and No.
The budget of defense in France still remain (2% of GDP) the same. So, they cut becasue the rise of the costs.

    mmmmmhh

France has no longer money. That’s the truth.
The request to be reintegrated in NATO means clearly that in the next future France will lose a lot of her assets due to lack of fund and will be no longer able to be indipendent, except for the nuclear asset.

Expensive programs planed during cold war, have to settle the counts with the post Berlin-Wall period.
CdG, Rafale and FOST have eaten and are eating to much from the budget of Defense and are killing other important project.

I don’t understand why HM gouvernment wants Lynx in a time of budget cuts.

Agusta Westland is developing AW149 that probably will be in service in Italy and other countries. So, why not focusing on a single helicopter, saving costs for both countries?

AW-101 is the best product of italian-british technology and it is the state of art today in service, as well as one of the most beautiful chopper in the world. It would be great to see another chopper developped in common giving a lots of satisfactions as 101 did.

But, of course, if HM wants her own helicopter for her navy, well, it will be not Finmeccanica that oppose. πŸ˜‰

Only by a very small amount. An Imperial (British) ton is 1016 kg. And anyway, the RN uses metric tons nowadays.

The big difference is between metric & Imperial tons on one hand, & puny little American 907 kg tons on the other. In British shipping & commercial parlance, as in commodity trading, they’re called “short tons”, while British tons are called “long tons”.

    Thanks Swerve,
probably the excess of 8k tons is referred to american tons.
