Guys, there is no such thing as air pockets. Steve is right, it’s CAT.
I think it is for training skippers only!!!! along way to go for me then…
First of all, the WESTERLY winter jetstream over the north Pacific can be up to 200kts on the nose, and as we are flying in a Westerly direction this means a greatly reduced ground speed and a bloody hell of a long flight.
As we are flying straight into it the flight time extends unlike the flight fom LAX to SYDwhich is a SW direction thus not having the same head wind component..
Don’t forget ETOPS stands for “Extended Twin OPerationS” This means over land as well as water. People often think it only applies over water.
Hope this helps….
Here is how to set the power…..
This technique is suitable for ferry take-off from wet or dry runways.
Align aircraft with runway centre line, release park brakes and hold aircraft on foot brakes.
F/O holds control column forward until Capt takes control.
Apply take-off thrust on the symmetrical engines and commence take-off with EPR set.
As the aircraft accelerates, the Capt simultaneously advances the asymmetric engine and maintain directional control using rudder pedals.
Excessive asymmetric thrust at too low a speed causes the nose wheel to skip under side load.
F/O called speeds in 10 KT increments from 50 KTS.
(At about VMCG the Capt removes hand from nose wheel steering tiller to control wheel and calls ‘I have control’)
Steadily increase thrust on asymmetric engine to attain full take-off thrust at a speed near to, but not below ground minimum control speed.
NOTE: Thrust, should gradually be set on the asymmetric engine once the airspeed indicator has started to move. Hasty power application below 30 KTS can lead to directional control problems.
And that’s it….
Ren,
I the world of ultra long haul, 4 hours is a mere hop. 6 hours is about right for long haul.
Just for info, our LAX to HKG in the winter is sometimes 16 hours.
As for widebody etc, we also put a 747-400 on the 1 hour hops, as the demand is there.
Wysi, FANTASTIC.
It’s a shame you always get one person to spoil the fun.

Also, it’s really stupid I know, but people may not take Cathay due to SARS
Yes that would be really stupid. But we now have over 25,000 pax a day at the moment, alot better than 6,000 a day in the recent months. SARS is fast becoming a distant memory.
That roue is a short hop, so I guess it was a small aircraft. Aircraft below a certain weight or number of seats will only require 1 pilot.
On a short hop, he must have been knackerd to sleep in such a short flight.
WYSI,
How could you forget, White Waltham International………
It sure does look real. This aircraft made the news not so long ago.
If on the selected date I am doing a London trip, I will try and make it.
I know hand, I must get out more…..
No, that’s not the reason DARTIE.
Cathay Pacific is the BEST.
