I personally don’t know why we bother stationing anything out there, not because i think its a worthless collection of rocks but because i think we’d be better off with a policy that says ‘if you invade our Falklands prepare to have your capital city wasted by cruise missiles’ it really could be as simple as that. You think many countries would try and invade the Falklands if they knew they would get there capitol city trashed – i for one don’t think there would be many countries keen to try it.
Mmmmmmm, World War 3 anybody?
How low?
I found this whilst looking at Phantom Phils clip, you could almost measure altitude in centimetres!
I’ve been educated again. Wasn’t aware that Portugal is a Lynx operator.
The Lynx has quite a few unexpected operators, including Argentina!
From Wiki,
Flag of Argentina Argentina
* Argentine Navy ordered ten Mk23s but only two were delivered before the outbreak of the Falklands War and the ensuing arms embargo imposed by the British. To make up for the undelivered aircraft, the Argentines ordered the Eurocopter Fennec.

Thanks guys!
Reading these positive posts has really cheered me up, I had a nagging feeling that the venerable Chipmunk had been omitted from PC flight sims!
I’ll be spending any free time I have in the next week or so trying to find a good value copy (ie cheap!) of FS2004 and get hold of the Chippy download and spend the coming monks reliving my Air Cadet days!
Thanks guys!
I could be wrong [i will check my daughters copy] but i think you will find that mention is made that the villians are listining in on the radio frequencys to prevent the good guy’s doing that.
BTW do C-123’s have ejector seats?
I’ve just checked Wiki and there is no reference to them being fitted with ejection seats and checking pictures on theaviationzone.com there are no warning signs on the side of the cockpit indicating ejection seats may be fitted.
We need to be more imaginative. I’ve had several car projects that have resulted in some very unusual marriages…I built a 1980 Austin Mini-Cooper that instead of using the wheezing 60hp mill uses a Honda 16B VTEC engine and something over 200 hp. (I challenge you and your Porsche to anything you like. But be careful. Even if you win you’ll look silly.) Is it too much to ask for a bit more cross pollination of ideas?
OK, an aircraft with the manoeuvrability of the F16, the climb rate of the EE Lightning, the looks of the Hunter the balls, longevity of the Phantom and equiped with the best avionics currently on offer!
None is surprised, that you can not give the rough numbers even.
According to http://www.aviapedia.com/news/another-24-su-27-to-be-upgraded-to-su-27sm-20061130
Sukhoi have just completed a 3 year upgrade project to bring 24 aircraft to SM standard.
I see nearly everbody has been talking about modern aircraft but are there any fighters from 10, 20 even 30 years ago that could cause serious problems for modern jets?
Lightning, Phantom and Hunter springs immediately to mind.
Not a fighter, but I want the TSR-2 BACK!! 😎
If the TSR2 had been purchased by the government in the 60s is there any chance, as with the later Tornado, we would have seen a TSR2, adv?
I’m sure with a bit of initiative you could squeeze a quad of long range missiles on it belly and a pair of pylons on her wings.
If we knew then what we know now…?
As a stand off long range interceptor/bomber destroyer the F3 is a superb aircraft, unfortunately it also shows the dangers of over specialisation as when it’s primary role ended with the end of the cold war it was not very suitable for anything else until they started using them for SEAD. For it’s designed role arguably no other fighter anywhere would have been better, as a general air superiority fighter almost any of the alternatives would have been better. That said, hindsight is a wonderful thing and it was the right aircraft for the RAF at the time it was concieved, if the cold war had never ended and the RAF and NATO had still needed a long range bomber destroyer we’d probably be talking of how great it was. The RAF desperately needs the EF Typhoon for it’s air combat role, although the GR4 is still a magnificent strike fighter.
In 1985 instead of introducing the Tornado F3 as the RAFs long range interceptor what would have been the UKs best choice knowing what we know now about the break up of the USSR in the 90s?
Middle Wallop consists of a large number of buildings dating from pre World War 2 and many of them are still painted in two tone camoflage, construction of the control tower commenced in 1938 and you can also see comoflage painted on this as well.
I’m not sure how old/original the five hangers are but after being inside them I would say very!
Some might say this isn’t a private airfield but judging by how many civvies work there I would say it is.
Hmmmm, where do I start?
Obviously my first buy would just have to be DH Chipmunk WP840, the first aircraft I flew in as a cadet in 1990.
Any one of 617 squadrens old Tornado GR1s (I know, time machine required!).
Harvard IIb FT375, one of the earliest models I made of this Boscombe based plane when I lived 2 miles from there.
And to finish my list off Harrier GR3, XW768. This one is for 2 reasons, the first Airfix kit I ever completed was of this aircraft and two, just think of the fun you could have doind aeros in a Harrier!
The problem with putting a Fred Dibnah statue on the vacant plinth is that Fred Dibnah would never have wanted it there because he was Bolton born and bred!
HA HA HA. I suppose you think that’s funny.
Sarcasm may be the lowest form of wit but it ranks as amongst the funniest :p
I guess I have 2, the first is buying WP840 and the second is (started at school as a teenager) flying a Tornado at Mach 1 through the Welsh valleys at tree top height! 😮
