New gate guard at Aviation Museum

THE Boscombe Down Aviation Collection at Old Sarum has a new gate guard in the form of a Hawker Hunter XF357.

The PW1120 would make a good J79 replacement, but you couldn’t fit the F119 in the space of an RM6/Avon. Just not happening.

How about some of the bombers getting engine upgrades?

    B-1B = swap old F101 for new F135’s/F136’s
    B-52 = swap old TF33 for new F118-100’s

Some retired bombers would have been improved with new engines…

Avro’s Vulcan = swap old Olympuses for newer Conway turbofans

What modifications were made to the 2 Vulcans that took part in the black Buck raid in 1982, were there not engine upgrades?

A Jet Provost has just flown over Boscombe Down heading west then turned and several minutes later and flew back over probably at only 3-4000 foot.

Red Arrows flying west to east over Hastings seafront 5.15pm today turning inland directly over the oldtown. Wonder where they had been and where they were going.

At 14.10 I was driving my truck near Weymouth when I noticed the red white and blue smoke from the Red Arrows who were displaying for the Weymouth Carnival.

‘Unique’ is one of those words that is poorly used nowadays – a bit like ‘awesome’ and ‘one of a kind’

I find it odd that they don’t future proof (!) those plaques – quoting the www address!

‘Epic’ is the wrongly used word that really p**ses me off!

if I was to buy an ex RAF Chipmunk and paint it with the serial number of another Chipmunk that is currently flying would the CAA allow this?

What makes you think I mean WP840?

‘Snafu’, you may well change your name yet again but you will always be ‘Little Demon’ to me.

I can remember from several scenes in The Battle Of Britain how easily it seems to be to fit two people in the single seats in Hurricanes, Spitfires and other WW2 fighters. Is there really that much room or is a lot of breathing in and squeezing required?

I’m pretty sure Boscombe Down had a visit from the Luftwaffe during World War 2 but have struggled to find anything on net for some reason.

As I walked along the north side Of Boscombe Down this morning between 5 to and 5 past 11 a small jet suddenly burst in to life and took off down runway 23, I didn’t get to see aircraft due to high bank in the way but was obviously either Hawk or Alpha Jet, a few minutes later a black helicopter (109?) flew in to the south side of the main runway, then an olive green Sea King with rotors folded was towed across the main runway from the north side to the south towards 2 others (with rotors out) parked outside (old?) Rotary Wing hangar and several minutes after that the blue white 109 from ETPS flew in from the east.

…and KF183 has spent the last 5 minutes doing circuits, I just love the deep drone of a Harvard! I wonder how long she’ll keep flying…?

I remember Barnes Wallis saying that he had a design for an aircraft which would fly to Australia in 4 hours

Australia in four hours? On a good day it takes me that long to get to Hull!

I imagine, like with the Lancaster, they will have to remove the bomb bay doors and have the bomb hanging slightly beneath the aircraft.

I used to wash Vulcans at Scampton. Is that any help? 😀

    Brian

I sometimes wash my car, I could wash the Vulcan’s wheels?
