I thought all the views were taken more recently than they obviously were as the Threshers shops in Amesbury and Bognor Regis are both open, company closed in early November ’09.

Bad news re the Mil-17s, they have been shipped out as a gift to the Afghan Air Force now and are no longer on our military register. 🙁

Sorry if this question has already been answered somewhere in the previous 2961 pages but did XH558 have an eventful service life? Was she involved in any (or ‘the’) raids, did she fly any important sorties or was she just a regular ol’ bomber?

This all makes the whole incident sound even better than the film made out! I did have a strong feeling that some of what is shown in the film whilst maybe not being complete bull**** certainly wasn’t 100% truth but I will definitely be keeping my eyes open for any recommended books.

I don’t quite understand the negative comment about this special scheme, surely any publicity for the Battle of Britain 70th Anniversary is good publicity??

I would have thought the BoB Memorial Flight would do a better job at this than a Tucano in fancy dress.

What is the Soviets problem with the MiG 29? During the 80’s and 90’s I was of the understanding as a fighter it was very well respected by the west but according to this it is unpopular with the Soviets.

How much space do tankers have inside them for carrying additional cargo/passengers alongside the fuel tanks?

The two Hips at Boscombe Down with the ETPS will be leaving the UK at the end of this month being gifted to the Afghan Air Force. 🙁

The pair of Hips were photographed on 24th Feb, see post 24/2.

For what it’s worth, in graduate school we studied the studies concerning violence on TV and in films.

After a couple of decades, dozens of studies and Lord knows how much time and money, the conclusions were….get ready for it….

It effects some of the people some of the time.
    No direct correlation.

What is experts fascination with finding reasons to explain everything? 2 ten year old boys brutally and horrifically murder a 2 year old and nobody has said the reason they did it was because they were pure evil.
Their upbringing was blamed, their parents, the movies they saw etc etc but you didn’t hear (m)any experts saying the reason they did this was because they were born evil.

re Venables new identity being revealed, I only hope it really is his new identity and that a totally innocent person in their late 20’s isn’t going to be on the receiving end of the most serious abuse imaginable!

Those eight engines (actually Kuznetsov NK-87 low-bypass turbofans) were only used all at take-off, to blow a cushion or ‘screen’ (hence the name ekranoplan) of air under the wings, to lift the beast off. Cruising would have been done on two engines.

It’s easier illustrated with the Orlyonok Ken posted a picture of; the two jet engines in it’s nose (two NK-8 turbofans) were for take-off, cruise was only with the big twin-prop on it’s tail.

Did I correctly count 14 jet engines on the aeroplane, 4 either side of the cockpit and 3 pairs on the fusalage spine?

Personally I’m for the locked up for LIFE, in solitary, no comforts, only occasional contact with relatives, and spending 23 hours out of every 24 locked in a spartan, basic cell option.

This point for all murderers can’t be made enough. I don’t agree with the death sentence because once they are dead where is the punishment? A life of complete suffering with the knowledge that it will never end is a much more severe punishment than death.

Could almost be said to make the death penalty seem lenient, the only people who suffer when a murderer is hanged would be his or her loved ones. The parents, immediate family and some friends may mourn his/her loss but everyone else will mourn the fact they have escaped a lifetime of punishment!
