A lovely day out in Poole, spent the morning travelling (1.5 hour trip) had a nice lunch at Yates then spent a couple of hours walking around shops, looking in lifeboat museum and relaxing on The Quay. Particularly nice as the weather was just right and as my wife is due to give birth to our first child in 11 weeks we won’t get too many chances to have a full day out exploring.
My bloody stop watch! Several months ago I lost my half decent stop watch so I bought a cheap one to replace it. Today, despite the humidity, I decided to do my first timed mile, I pushed myself quite hard, was sweating like a good ‘un and when I checked my time it showed 3.47 seconds.
:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:I’m off out to buy a new stop watch this afternoon…!

Today I managed a 1.4 mile run into nearby Tidworth, turned around and walked 3 quarters of a mile back towards home and then did a timed mile back to the edge of Shipton Bellinger.
I know there are plenty of people who do much more than this on a daily basis but if anybody knows how little I used to think of running over the last 20 years of my life then this is an outstanding achievement! 😎
My goal now is to do this 3 times a week and hopefully have much improved times by the end of the year and be entering 5k on to 10k runs into next year.

Do these count? Fireflies operated by Defence Elementary Flying Training School, this one at Middle Wallop.

Certainly in the early war years hard runways did not have markings, and were camoflaged as this 1942 shot shows:
Are there many colour pictures of camoflaged runways as I always find B&W photos tend to lose the effect?
In my neighbourhood
8 miles away from me on the A344 at Stonehenge are two memorials. The first is to Major A.W. Hewetson, who died when his plane crashed very close to the site of the memorial. The inscription reads ‘In memory of Major Alexander William Hewetson 66th battery Royal Field Artillery who was killed whilst flying on the 17th July 1913 near this spot’. The second is 1km to the west at Airman’s cross and is inscribed ‘To the memory of Captain Loraine and Staff-Sergeant Wilson who whilst flying on duty, met with a fatal accident near this spot on July 5th 1912 Erected by their comrades’.
I imagine there were quite a few casualties in this area with the first military aeroplane trials taking place at Larkhill in August 1912, only 1 mile north of Stonehenge.
Let me know when it’ll be safe to come out!
Cracking pics, but the MR.4 just looks wrong.
But then Comet fans probably said the same about the Nimrod in the late 1960s!
I agree, those oval air intakes look completely wrong!
WP840. I have no idea what the coloured stripes are ? but they are present on a lot of 8 Sqdn Shackleton photos in this thread from another forum (hope the link works)
Keith.
Wow! Those Shackletons sent shivers down my spine, incredible aircraft.
What are the yellow (red?) and blue stripes either side of the fuselage roundel on the Chipmunk?
I thought all the views were taken more recently than they obviously were as the Threshers shops in Amesbury and Bognor Regis are both open, company closed in early November ’09.
