The script went through many stages – I have four distinct versions on file and there was a myriad of detailed ‘re-writes’. Enigma employed a number of ‘Historical Advisors’, including Roger Freeman and the finished movie contains what is best called a ‘montage’ of events that ‘may’ have happened to 8th Air Force crews – to say that they happened to the ‘real’ crew over the 25 missions, is incorrect, if only because the aircraft never actually flew 25 combat missions!

I thought the only thing Memphis Belle ever became famous for was being the first aircraft/aircrew to complete 25 missions?

Well I have to admit I still enjoy Memphis Belle; you could take the view that overall it is no less accurate than BoB, the latter, whilst sticking to the actual events, still includes ficticious characters and a condensed storyline (which admittedly is all a film of 2-3 hours length can offer), and ofcourse the mkIX Spitfire wasn’t available in 1940.

I’m sure everything that happened in the film actually happened to someone, there were so many B17’s flying, over here, that it must have; maybe even that crew, just not all on the last mission!

I always thought that all of the many emergencies that Memphis Belle encountered in the film all happened at some stage in the crews 24 other missions. Can anyone confirm this or was the whole film a case of artistic licence?

Shades of the aircraft names thread here.

Eagle dosen’t fit well at all, the Harrier and Kestrel were very strong VSTOL fighter relations and the Hawk a trainer, all were HS designs and could be argued as not being fast jets.
There really dosen’t seem to be much of a common naming policy at the time, with Lightning and Phantom (fighters) and Canberra, Buccaneer and Jaguar (Strike) all about at the planned service time.
If it was to follow suit at all it would have been named after a city of the UK (or ex Commonwealth), but which one would have suited?
If I had to guess I would have said that it would have picked up the wind theme again – like the Tornado did.

But I don’t think the Gusty GR1 would have instilled fear in our enemies!

Biggest….how about the Saunders Roe Princess? Bigger than Spruce Goose IIRC. And it flew properly.

The Princess had a maximum take off weight of 345,025lb whereas the Spruce Goose had a maximum take off weight of 400,000lb.

I think the Spruce Goose can therefore be classed as the largest flying boat.

I never realised you can buy Hurricane props in Tesco, you still haven’t taken it out of the bag in bottom picture.

    I know, I know, I’ll see myself out…!

During WW2 why did RAF fighters have a yellow ring around the red, white and blue roundel on the fuselage? Why also were the roundels on the wings only the standard 3 colour and when did the yellow ring start getting painted thinner?

There was only about 10 years between the design of the Lancaster and the Vulcan, designed by the same company, and the same designer in Roy Chadwick. To see the two together it was hard to believe how far and how fast things did change.

I never realised how short the time was between the design of the Lancaster and that of the Vulcan! 😮 I guess if you look at what aircraft flew in the RAF in 1039 and then in 1945 that too will show how quickly designs were advancing.

Maybe this is going off at a slight tangent but why don’t civvie airliners have names? I realise the 747 is often called the Jumbo Jet but I always thought that as an unofficial nickname.

Possibly a good place to be could be South Wiltshire/West Hampshire. With the massive number of tourists in the area visiting everywhere from Salisbury Cathedral, Stonehenge up to Avebury you could get a large number of tourists after something a bit different.

This sounds like a great idea!
I would have thought a good place to be would be close to Nottingham, that way it is relatively close to the Red Arrows home of RAF Scampton and the M1 for ease of access. Hopefully in a few years you’ll have been able to expand to include a Hawk and/or a Gnat.

The reason I personally didn’t think aircraft could get much bigger was passenger safety, no matter how many back up systems etc an aircraft may have they can still crash. I can’t see people being keen to ride on an aircraft if they hear of one crashing with 750+ fatalities!

How much more English can you get than de Havilland?

    But I take your point.

Still, with a modern engine up front, it would still beat many current basic trainers.

    Bruce

I agree with Bruce, de Havilland is English, we want new Chipmunks!

OMG “Someone” actually must’ve sat down with a pen, note pad & looked for all those mistakes in the movie….Haven’t they got anything else better to do? I thought I spotted a few, but jesus….LOL

I did, the day I found these goofs I printed off the sheets and ticked each one off…!
