untill the arrival of the mig-25 to the IRAF the f-4 was a superior fighter then it lost that edge to the 25 and later to the F1-EQ in the iraq iraq war

I WAS INTERESTED to see if they had any runs with pakistani f-16s like we did in the 90s with jordanian f-16s ?

Don’t let Firebar hear you talk such crazy talk, as he’ll do his best to convince you otherwise.(i.e. Mach 3 for 30-40 minutes):D

there is no such thing,,the only airforce in the world that have combat experince for a long time(years) is the IRAF ,,EVEN FROM SENIOR GUYS i never heard such a thing,,during the iran-iraq war i havent heard of a mach 3.2 which is the speed on paper that i havent seen or heard, and i tell you there is no situation in combat where it is so tempting to do that when your clearing the enemy airspace

handels quite well,,the elevator surface slightly heavy turn radius is reduced as you would expect at that speed , 10,000 meters altitude

IRAF_PILOT – did you ever exceed Mach 3 in your Mig-25? If so can you confirm or deny rumours where the engine if operated at those speeds required an overhaul on the ground?

we were told by iraqi engineers who trained in russia that a 45 second mach 3+ flight would mean a re-engine so flight was limited to 2.8 i personally never seen 3 my best was 2.75 chased by 2 jordanian f-16s and guess who won!

Are you sure it’s not a mistake?
RB can’t be used as an interceptor

there is another thread in this forum with a picture of a lybian mig-25RB with AAM on borad the 8th recc/interceptor squadron that i flew with had 25/PD/RB
    THE PD in iterceptor/attack role
    the RB in recc/iterceptor role
there were experiments conducted by the ministry of defence/ when hussien kamel was in power….on the RB to incoperate french AAM/RADAR INTO the RB as they did with the mig-21…with limited success
    thank you

    dear IRAF_PILOT

There is some information here not accurate.

the IRAF have the first unit of MIG-23MS in 1976 and the first unit of MIG-23MF in 1983 that you didn’t mention it and the first unit of MIG-23ML in the late 1984.
and the IRAF used the MIG-25PD in interceptor role not the MIG-25RB.

i did mention that, i know the MS since i started as a pilot in 1982 since when it started i dont know AND ML in 1984,,as for the 25,, i did mention the mig-25pd IN OTHER UNITS as primary interceptor although it was used for deep srikes that failed in my unit the RB was used for both RECC and later 1986-1988 IN interceptor role,,my information is based on facts,,yours on books,,if you lived in iraq and you are a pilot the last thing you do is ask questions,,like when and where,,i dont expect you to know that anyway…

    IRAF_PILOT-

Do you know of any launches by Iranian F-14 crews of their Phoenix missiles at Iraqi MiG-25’s? There is some debate among historians whether the Iranians truly had the activation codes to use them or not.

And if you don’t mind answering, what Iranian threat did you most fear when you were in the MiG-25RB? (The hawk sam’s, perhaps?)

thanks mad rat,,excellent question to my knowledge we have not lost a single mig-25 to f-14A,,losses were to ground fire(i mean hawk batteries) AROUNF KHARK ISLAND WHEN WE WERE FORCED TO strike low after not acieving result with high targeting,,there were loses to mech failure and other causes the iranians claim MIG-25RB kills to f-14A even to F-4A which are false
the guy who wrote the book iran-iraq war in the air 1980-1988 his name is cooper is pro-iranian airforce read the book and you will reach that conclusion i have written to him to point out that many of his claims are untrue..
    thanks madrat

you have to know that the mig-23 started arriving in iraq in 1980 with the start of the iran iraq war units started swiching from mig-21 to 23 MS first then ML next,,the radar capability was very basic and its air-air capabilty is reagrded among the IRAQi airforce pilots as less than the MIG-21MF,,IF you follow the iranian air to air kills you will find that F-4E air to air kills against the iraqi airforce is higher in the MIG-23 than the MIG-21 although the mig-21 in recc. role and cole air support was used more commonly,,i am a MIG-25 pilot but a very tranied MIG-21MF muyself IF I GO INTO COMBAT AGAINST A f-4E i would rather be in a MIG-21MF with french air-air missiles rather than in a mig-23,,,i flew the MIG-23MS in traning not in combat and did not like it,,flew the mig-21mf in combat for 3 years before going to MIG-25 which i flew in RECC role and INTERCEPTOR ROLE AND a-g role,,,in RECC magnificent i am in and out so fast no plane can put up a chase,,,in interceptor role highly superiore to anything the iranians can put in the air even the F-14,,in A-G role against ground targets very disappointing.
i hope i answered your questions

one of the longest and most significant air wars is the IRAQ-IRAN war in the air from 1980-1988 which i took part in starting as a Lt. in 1981 i retired the IRAF in 1999.and for sure from what i have seen and read this war need more in-depth look at how western (iran f-4e,f-5,f-14A) AGAIST SOVIET (MIGS/SU) AND LATER FRENCH(f-1EQ) matched, certainly if you ask me which plane you would be in in a dog fight it would be the MIG-25RB that i flew,,,is it a good attck plane,,in the hands of iraqi pilots no it wasnt,,the iraqi experience with the mig-23 was a disaster and most mig-23 dilivered to iraq were used in ground attack roles,,,thank you for this nice thread
