a defection happens between two states at war,, what happned in the 1st gulf war was evacuation of aircraft according to the government orders to iran plus we were not at war with iran.
Defection during the Iraq-Iran air war 1980-1988
what about the defection during the iran-iraq war 1980-1988?
i know each aircraft that defected from both sides,,there was NO f-14A defection at all,, was all rumors of that and that we gave it to the soviet union,,false!
you have ignored the only airforce which used the su as it workhorse with more combat hours then the rest combined
the su 20//22 was the workhorse of 8 years of daily air combat in the iran-iraq war..
thank you
i am a mig-25 pilot , the egyptians never flew the mig 25 all these were soviet mig-25 that the soviets used for thier own recon,,infact most of the information that the soviets gained from these overflights never filtered down to the egyptians
just to let you know that an iraqi high ranking military delecation will visit moscow this year including airforce people. talks will be concentrated on helicopters for the iraqi army but will include plans of purchising fighter/strike aircraft
and although i am 52 now i have submittedmy papers to the IrAF as they have asked for former soviet trained pilots to submitt thier papers.. my be an indication for future purchases
the MIG 23 saw extensive action during the iran-iraq war, as you know iraq started with the MS then MF and later the ML, lots of pilots flew it i didnt as i was qulaified from the 21R that i flew earlier in the war to the 25, you have to know that the first F-14A kill in the iran iraq war was by a 23 by i guy i knew very well,,its a very capable aircraftif used in the right way,, the no 39 squadron of the IRAF aws the most successful in flying the 23 with the highest kills sadly the IrAF command made a big mistake of using it in ground attack role with the BN and the Su-22.
i still maintain if you want to extend fast you will like the 23 in the iran iraq war certainly better then the f-5E although the F-5E is better armed.
thanks for that thread its really good
the article I pointed by général A. Sadik & T. Cooper clearly state the plane was indeed equipped with Mirage F1 radar, and use to fire exocets on at least a couple occasions while disguised in commercial flight. It is said IIRC that it’s that plane that hit USS Stark, and that it stop its exocet attacks just after because it was not supposed to exist and iraq didn’t want to answer US questions.
Maybe the falcon 50 were then used for target towing?
Nic
if you believe everything that cooper says .. i and others find his book full of inconsistancies and yes my friend mig-21 was wired and used in active service for the 550 and yes the mig 25 was wired AND NOT USED in active serivice becuase of problems and the idea was abandoned
and what attcked the uss stark was a mirage F1 EQ 5 200 as was painted and saudi F-15 scrambled to chase too late known facts within the IRAF
Look lets put things into prospective
iran had a good airforce the best in the middle east in 1979 certainly their f-14 crews are very good, the f-14a was a good platform now old even older f-4’s and 5’s all this mombo jumbo is crap saddam tried it and failed instead of waiting money i think iran should seriosly turn to russia for su-33 + technology i know thier mig-29 experience was not good it wasnt good in the iraqi airforce either
my expert advice is to stop waisting money and go for su-33 or rafale/gripen
LOO CLOSLEY AT THE PICTURE;
1.this air show was done in 1989 in al-muthana aiport in central baghdad i was there
2.saddam walking with the commander of the military industry next to him and the guy pointing is hussien kamal his son in law and minister of industry then
3. look at the falcon the nose cone is to change how the plane looks like and they named it somthing else i even dont remember what
4. all this for show the plane never flew with that thing on it
5. those 2 falcons were target towing falcons infact back in 1987 i fired matra magic A/A which was wired to my Mig-25 on a target towed by one of them in the western desert off H3
thank you
i said we hope to fly su-27 and mirage 2000 not we flew them, as we were planning to get them prior to 1991
thanks
yes iraq modifies the su-22 M4 to carry the douglas buddy refulling pod that was for the mirage F1 to be carried on the centre pylon i dont think it was used during the iran-iraq war all the SU 22 that flew with me had none
thanks
i dont know about the a-10 i am a fighter pilot
BUT
you are right about the 2000
AND
you are dead spot on about the f-14,,what a scary fighter i cam across them in the iran – iraq war the combination of the AWG/PHEONIX AIM54 SYSTEM IS DEADLY THE F-18 is not even close.
i certanly wish the f-14 could still fly and would recommend it as a front line fighter for iraq
out of the aircraft no longer in production…
Mirage 2000 – still plenty of potential customers left. India would’ve ordered more. Still viable today
A-10 – still really viable today
F-14D – I think some of you may not agree here
THANKS
REFGARD ME OLD FASIONED,,i flew the f1 eq 200 on evaluation flights i am a mig pilot what does the rafale have in common with the mirage f-1 does it still carry the 530/550 and will it make a good front role fighter for the new iraqi airforce.
i am against the f-16 program

The 10th anniversary of the rafale B301, the first production rafale.

It has also participated in many airshows around the world (with the “rafale” tag on its tail) flown by by Dassault test pilot Eric Gerard.
Switzerland, Payerne, Air04
Paris, Le Bourget 2005It was involved in the Swiss evalution in october 2008 and was used to demonstrate the capability of the first RBE-2 AESA to the Swiss Airforce
