Wiser to concentrate resources on the PAK-FA. Russia should not repeat the American mistake of killing the F-22 to go to the F-35; mostly considering that have a much smaller pocket.
From Jane’s Defence Weekly:
“Russian analysts familiar with the T-50 prototype configuration state that production series models will require major changes in inlet geometry in order to achieve the required reductions in radar cross-section. The current layout has the 117S fan-face in a direct line of sight with the air intake, which would make its frontal hemisphere too observable.”
So, Sukhoi designers started from scratch with wrong inlet geometry to immediately realize that a redesign is necessary? Sound strange. May be the above post is right; the “analyst” is Pavel Felgenhauer or a similar folk.
S-400 news
Russian long range ballistic missiles for S-400 Triumph surface-to-air missile systems will go into serial production in the autumn, a leading missile manufacturer said on Friday.
Earlier media reports said the S-400 missile system was incomplete as long range ballistic missiles, among others, had not been adopted for it.
“On December 26, 2009 the preliminary tests were finished and the missile was put forward for state tests,” Kommersant daily quoted the general director of Almaz-Antei, Igor Ashurbeili, as saying.
“In the third quarter of 2010 we should finish them, along with combat duty launches, and then put it [the missile] into serial production in the fourth quarter,” he added.
According to Ashurbeili, there were no technical failures or difficulties concerning the long range missile tests.
“The tests of S-400 missile lasted for about 3 years…We are bewildered by the bacchanalia of rumors and slander concerning the issue as an ordinary working process is going on,” he continued.
Ashurbeili added that the situation regarding the production of missiles after 2012 is unclear as Almaz-Antei does not have “any signed contracts for 2012”.
The S-400 Triumph boasts unique characteristics. It can destroy any air target, including aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, and cruise and ballistic missiles within a range of 400 kilometers and an altitude up to 30 kilometers. The system is almost three times more efficient than its Russian and foreign counterparts.
There are no plans so far to export the S-400. It will be produced only for the Russian Armed Forces. An additional two systems will be deployed by the end of 2010.

Talking about superior. I seriously doubt of the so called Su-35BM or T-50 is superior to anything China is going to field in next 2-3years.
:eek::D
Tha’s a typo or a bad joke.
Hate to say I told you so (but see post 514)
I must give up. You are rigth.
As for Ukraina … that would be a waste of money IMHO but see for yourself: http://flot.sevastopol.info/eng/ship…an/ukraina.htm

Russia intends to buy the missile cruiser “Ukraine”?
Russia is interested in buying the missile cruiser Ukraine, said State Duma Deputy, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Military-Technical Cooperation Mikhail Nenashev.
“This ship is 70% ready. This ship can be accepted into the Navy of Russia. We need this ship,” – said Nenashev. The MP noted that the cruiser’s weapons and navigation systems need installing.
He stressed that the agreement on the prolongation of the Black Sea Fleet in Ukraine opens the way to achieve concrete agreements on the issue of the purchase of the cruiser. Nenashev said that the cruiser can be used on any of the four fleets of Russia.
“Within months we will check the position on the ship, and at the end of May, I’m willing to talk specifics,” – he added.
According to the deputy, the former leadership of Ukraine showed an “inability” to settle the issue. He also stressed that cooperation with Ukraine on shipbuilding and ship repair involves precisely full co-production of vessels, not just spraying the paint.
Nenashev also reported that the tender with the Kherson Shipyard is almost ready, which is necessary to the Russian side to restart the nuclear reactors, and we are ready to take it for the Navy for use in a system of naval transport. “
He stressed that in the case of preparedness of Ukrainian authorities, Russia is ready to place other orders, including aircraft carriers, in Ukrainian shipyards.
According Nenashev, Russia will need 4-5 aircraft carriers.
😮
Russo-Ukrainian cooperation is advancing really fast. Let the oranges cry. :diablo:
Sev delayed
Moscow (RIA Novosti) Apr 21, 2010
Russia will not float out a new nuclear-powered multipurpose attack submarine as planned on May 7 due to technical reasons, a source in the shipbuilding industry said on Tuesday.
Construction of the Severodvinsk, the first Project 885 Yasen (Graney) class submarine, began in 1993 at the Sevmash shipyard in the northern Russian city of Severodvinsk but has since been dogged by financial setbacks. Russia planned to float out the submarine on May 7 to mark the 65th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany in May 1945.“The launch of the new Severodvinsk submarine has been delayed for technical reasons,” the source said, adding that the sub would be floated out and pass sea trials later this year.
Graney class nuclear submarines are designed to launch a variety of long-range cruise missiles (up to 3,100 miles or 5,000 km) with nuclear warheads, and effectively engage submarines, surface warships and land-based targets.
The submarine’s armament includes 24 cruise missiles, including the 3M51 Alfa SLCM, the SS-NX-26 Oniks SLCM or the SS-N-21 Granat/Sampson SLCM. It is also equipped with eight torpedo launchers, as well as mines and anti-ship missiles such as SS-N-16 Stallion.
The Severodvinsk is expected to enter service with the Russian Navy by late 2010 – early 2011.
Last year, work started on the second sub in the series, the Kazan, which will feature more advanced equipment and weaponry.
Russia’s Navy commander, Adm. Vladimir Vysotsky, has called the construction of new-generation nuclear-powered ballistic missile and attack submarines a top priority for the Russian Navy.
Interesting page from Planeman’s blog.

The big question is, Can the Iranians build on their own an S-300 like system? Even if equivalent to early S-300 versions, it would be an outstanding achievement
From RIAN
Ukraine’s Constitutional Court has ruled that the extension of Russia’s lease on a naval base in Crimea conforms to the country’s Constitution, Foreign Minister Kostyantyn Hryshchenko said on Thursday.
The lease agreement, signed on Wednesday, extends Russian naval presence in the port of Sevastopol for 25 years after the current lease expires in 2017, and may be further extended by another five years.
The Ukrainian opposition earlier said any prolongation of Russian military presence would require amendments to the Constitution as well as a national referendum.
Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych said the country would benefit from the extension of the lease agreement as Ukraine would be receiving money on a cash basis for the lease, opposite to writing off the debts for the use of the Russian natural gas.
“Considering that the annual lease fee for the presence of the Black Sea Fleet was $97.850 million, this is the sum which was used in offset settlements every year to reduce the debt for natural gas consumed by Ukraine,” he said, explaining that Ukraine had accumulated debts for gas supplies since it gained independence in 1990s.
“We have agreed that Russia will give a considerable discount [on gas prices] for the next 10 years,” Yanukovych said.
He also said that the fleet had been stationed in Sevastopol since Soviet times and the local infrastructure was set up for the naval base.
KIEV, April 22 (RIA Novost)
Russia will pay higher rent for its naval base in Ukraine starting in 2017 and payments will be made in hard cash, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said on Thursday.

We might even see Kuznetsov dock again in the Ukraine for overhaul?
:eek::o Unlikely.
It wasn’t the Oranges that destroyed the economy. That belongs to no party. It was just straight up corruption.
Off-course but the Orange obsession to confront Russia even damaging self-interest played a big part also. Add also a self-damaging ultra-neoliberal economic path and you will have the same effects seen i.e. in Russia in 1998 and in Argentina in 2001.
Anyway, given the low productivity of Russian shipyards and the shortage of repair spaces in Russia, it will be interesting to see if some Russian vessels are sent to Nikolayev
The Oranges are a minority now.
Yeap but they are a minority of more than 40%. They are furiously screaming on the subject.
They’re an extreme just like the pro-Russians are the opposite extreme. This is a pro-Russian decision,
Fully agreed. Ukraine seems as an extremely polarized country and that’s bad because of the never fading tensions between both visions.
but if one looks at Ukraine’s economy and especially the well being of Crimea, this is in the best interest of the nation. I don’t expect Ukraine to make giant concessions to Russia (or the EU). Especially if Yanukovich wants to retain power.
Actually I think Mr Yanukovich got a very favorable deal if you consider that the discount on gas prices is around 40 billinos for the 25 years (with current gas values). This in exchange of a base ALREADY SETLED! I think giant concessions were obtained from Russia and not given to Russia.
Furthermore this will be a blessing deal for the heavily damaged (by the Oranges) Ukrainian economy.
Im sure Moscow is very worried about Iran sending it a message….
The Russians have already imposed sanctions on Iran in the form of stopping all gasoline deliveries. The S-300’s are nothing when compared to Lukoil pulling out of Iran. The Iranians are paying a 20% premium above market prices to get gasoline today — its ripping their economy a new hole. The US has nothing to complain about when it comes to Moscow-Tehran ties. The Russians have not shown any serious support for the regime and while they are opposed to the most stringent of sanctions that doesnt make them friends of Iran, they simply know that completely bankrupting the country will only lead to refugee spill over into their own backyard. For an Iranian, it’s a hop and a skip across the Caspian into Russia and from there not that long of a bus ride to a nice and rich EU border.
Well, if Russia signed a contract to deliver S-300 systems to Iran, must fulfill it. Furthermore I’m not sure Rosonboronexport executives will be happy to see HQ-10 in place of S-300 in Iran.
I’m sure Russia don’t want to see a nuclear Iran. Neither she wants to see an American-Israeli bombardment campaign against Iran and the best way to deter such a scenario is to provide Iran with a credible SAM net. Off-course a few S-300 batteries will not defeat an American-Israeli bombardment campaign, but they can turn the cost high or very high.
Iran is clearly desperate to get Russia to agree to the S-300 supply deal. Have they shot themselves in the foot with all the bluster about building their own version.
Iran to build S-300 substitute

Russia yet to decide on Iran S-300 deal
If Russia fail to deliver, may be is time for Iran to buy “Made in China” S-300 copies. Russia deserves to get the message if fails to fulfill signed compromises.
In the latest Army Day parade.
S-300 already delivered ?! :eek::confused:
