    One solution would be to take the additional antennas as spares for the aircraft still being equipped with the MSA. But who knows whether there won’t be changes to the back-end. There are definitely differences, such as no TWT, new power supply and cooling as well as the ACU. Only the processor and receiver are retained according current plans. But who knows what they might change in the meantime.

    Thanks Spud. So basically weapons integration is still the same as before, when it comes to integrate those weapons for the first time. But it’s hopefully easier to integrate weapons on additional aircraft by just loading the weapon profiles to the UAI and the FCS can adapt to that without needing a new software update. Btw the pdf appears to be broken.

    Are there any more details known about this magical UAI and how it will ease weapons integration on the F-35?

    @Curios,
    without an indigenous radar the European manufacturers would be dependent on the US good will. This was a major stumbling block for the export of the Tornado back then and maintaining the necessary industrial base and technological capacity is crucial. Otherwise Europe wouldn’t be competitive.

    T3B talks halted, but AESA phase 2 gets ok

    As reported on flightglobal the ongoing talks between the industry and the 4 partner nations has been suspended.
    http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2011/03/30/354941/budget-pressures-halt-eurofighter-tranche-3b-talks-says-cassidian.html

    It currently looks like there will be no decision within the next 2 years and there is a risk of a production break. Solutions are being discussed.

    In the meantime the 4 partner nations gave their ok to continue with the second phase of the Captor-E development programme. The first phase ended on March 31 2011 and was financed by the industry. It currently looks like Industry will fund the second phase as well.

    He flew from Tunesia according your very quote. I suppose he got there via car or so and flew from there.

    More the consequences from that. As stated above the RAF doesn’t have enough pilots being combat ready for the Typhoon and will have difficulties to sustain the ops over Libya. All resources are needed and that includes those pilots who are destined for the display team and even instructors.

    Block 5, UK only.

    UK block 8+ and all other partner nations aircrafts don’t have a validated software supporting AtG modes yet.

    Not entirely true. What SRP 4.2 offers for UK block 5 is Litening 3EF and EPW II as well as KFF integration. All aircraft from block 5 onwards can drop LGBs, but can’t self designate them. AG radar modes are already available…

    Luftwaffe Eurofighter loose drop tanks…

    The aircraft in question was GT002, which was just recently re-delivered following its R2 upgrade.

    The Rafale begun its operationnal career (in 1999 or 2000, can’t remember) as a pure A2A (F1 standart) only for the MN (french navy), replacing -at last- Crusaders.

    It was in 2000 to be exactly on December 4. Handover of the first two LF1 aircraft at Landiviseau NAS, where Flottile 12F was inaugurated on May 18 2001. IOC state reached in October 2002 and FOC on June 25 2004. 😉

    @mrmalaya,
    what do you think I’ll not agree with? What can be said is that the Typhoon should have been more capable in the AG role right now according earlier plans and that the Rafale for example was concurrently developed and poses a lot of capabilities right now. Of course it is valid to point out the different priorities set by the customers and its mainly the politics which has to be blamed for the slow decision making processes and overall slow progress of the Eurofighter programme as such. Albeit one must face reality that all this can’t detract from the fact that the Typhoon is currently lacking in some areas where others don’t. The aircraft offers a lot potential and if it is used I’m certain the Typhoon will become a decent multirole platform. A compromised one and certainly not the best striker/attacker the world has ever seen, but adequate to do the job.

    @Eagle1,
    that post actually proves the point that AG was considered from the very beginning and not as an after thought. However, it outlines that AG had no priority over AA and that the aircraft was basically designed as a pure fighter, with AG capabilities being subordinated. That’s not really news and in fact what people are arguing here since years.

    I’m not going to judge what’s “better”. Both configurations have their merit. Every side has its own reasons to opt for this or that solution. Btw just for correction on the Typhoon it’s either 2 x SRAAM + 6 x MRAAM or 4+4. ASRAAM and IRIS-T both pose a limited BVR capability which covers the transitional area between WVR and BVR. So you aren’t limited to WVR shots with these weapons, albeit you won’t be able to conduct long range shots, but that’s the area covered by the AMRAAM anyway.

    Well the versatility of the Mica IR makes up for this as your missiles are both BVR/WVR-off boresight capable, so in most cases you don’t need as many missiles as when carrying dedicated BVR or WVR missiles. Besides, should the need arise those pylons can still be cleared, and there is always the possibility to carry two missiles under the belly as in the original Rafale concept.

    Nic

    4 is still 4, whether you can use them at WVR and BVR doesn’t change that fact. But as mentioned it’s more than sufficient for all kind of scenarios, spare perhaps a large scale war with a major power which is unlikely to happen anytime soon anyway. Of course it is possible to clear the outer pylons, as I have stated before. In theory it would be possible to clear almost every pylon for AAM carriage, but that’s neither planned, nor a given right now. The centre line pylons aren’t cleared for MICA anyway or have you ever seen an operational Rafale with MICAs on the centreline stations? It is an option and the Rafale A has been flown with mock up missiles on these stations, but in reality MICA isn’t integrated/cleared for those centre line stations. The current max. of MICAs is in fact 6, as the current max of AAMs on the Typhoon is in fact 8. Both aircraft could carry more in if it would be decided to clear them on additional pylons or if dual-launch rails would be used for examples. Many years ago it was stated that Dassault considers such dual launch rails (supposedly for the centre wing stations) to increase the number of AAMs, if there would be a requirement for it.
