A gentleman with the name of Gregs Farrish or Parrish, IIRC – yes, Gregs, not Greg! Now sadly deceased.
The Raymond Baxter documentary, again IIRC, was made in about 1974. Certainly pre-September 1982, as Douglas Bader was interviewed – talking about what happened if you put your nose down and the “gravy” went to the top of the carburettor…

Indeed. I recall about 1992 coming across a scrapyard-cum-display in Kent somewhere in the weald that I’d passed in the minibus when at school, but never been able to stop at. It had a portable steam engine in the yard at the front, and a large twin-row radial engine which somene later told me was from a B-24 – said he’d traded it for the machine gun his museum had.
Anyway, being rapidly overtaken by brambles under the hedge was the remains of a crashed V1 – and it appeared to be largely of steel construction. Surprised hell out of me when I realised what it was – it was the remains of the shutters in the intake, I think, that gave it away.

Pete,
Dunno what software you have so cannot offer tailor made help, but try reducing the resolution of the scan. Screens work at 72 dpi, so I rarely scan at more than 150 dpi (lets you blow up to double size). Try those two sizes, save as a JPEG at about 8 on the quality scale (it should ask you this when you save it). If that doesn’t work, try saving a bit lower than 8. If THAT doesn’t work erm… dunno!
Adrian
For heaven’s sake take a photo!
Adrian
We could always have a Leg Ends that no-one bitches about afterwards, but that is REALLY in the realms of fantasy!
Adrian
The jpeg is called XL190 – could Tommo have it?
If so, I bet that was an expensive trip!
Adrian
OI! Who are you calling a grown man? I resemble that remark!
Adrian
😀 Wish I was there! I did ring Dad and see if he wanted to take a look, but he’s staying in the cool. Can you blame him!
AG
Pete,
I’m having a lousy time at the moment but you have cheered me up no end. Oh, if only I were there to watch the fun!
Do you think the nice man with the camera from the Brainless and Witless Times has appeared yet? If not perhaps someone could find him? :diablo:
Adrian
(who, for the uninitiated, grew up in the same parish Pete is talking of)
Two “T”s at end – airfield on Orkney
One “T” at end – idiot in light blue?
Adrian
(I’ll get me coat…)
Could I be the first to lower the tone by mentioning RAF Twatt please? :diablo:
Adrian
Sorry, Julian. No joy anywhere.
No reply from the Essex mailing list
No trace of a Frunds farm, or anything remotely resembling it, in the 1914 trade directory, either in Wickford or any of the surrounding parishes.
Not a squeak in placenames either. All in all a bit of a poor show!
Hope you have better look over on the Great War Forum!
Adrian
Julian,
Try here:
http://www.1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/
You will need to register but there is a “war in the air” forum with some very knowledgeable people on it, and there are several from down Wickford way.
Alternatively, try a thread with the farm name as a title – there are at least a couple of people on this forum from that neck of Essex too.
I’ll have a look in “Place Names of Essex” and if I remember try my historic directories for you. I’ve also put a message on an Essex mailing list. PM me on Monday if you haven’t heard anything!
Looking forward to the programme – if you get any input on content, make sure the producers put an hours history in and don’t pad it!
Adrian
And just at the moment the thread underneath this is…
Spitfire at FAB!
How apt…
ADrian
Good point, Dave. Must have a surprisingly wide flight envelope…
