I was waiting to see how Taff Smith got the Gull back on the deck!

Maybe he’s still up there? Anyone near OW to take a look?

    (Sorry – couldn’t resist it! I’ll get me coat…)

Good to hear that the “nicked” Chippy has turned up – now let’s hope that the person who did it is also “nicked”!

I remember being on a Conservation “holiday” clearing scrub in the Norfolk Broads way back, and the area was positively heaving with Chipmunks. Engine failure drill was a regular and where we were surrounded by trees meant that our “horizon” was very high. It was a common sight for a Chippy to be heard spluttering, the engine would stop, and it would slowly glide down behind the trees towards the Broad itself. Sooner or later the engine would cough again, roar into life and they would climb away. Some of the restarts were a LOT later than sooner and several times we downed tools and waited for the splash! It never happened though…

    Hi David,
In any event, I have a very nice 30’s cabin aircraft in the form of my beautiful Miles Falcon.

Ahhhhhhhhhh, he says meaningfully, would that be one of the wondrous machines I was salivating over at the Autumn display? If so you are correct – she’s very nice!

(by the way you will be pleased to know that I have learnt an awful lot about autogiros recently!)

Dornier Do 217. In the eighties a Hermann was defused by a British UXB team.

As an EOD (or whatever the term is this week) unit are based at Debden, this could be one of the ones on display.

I believe it was a Hermann that was found at the bottom of a gasometer when Beckton gasworks was demolished in the 1980s – or was it an SC500?

I suspect that the weight may be total rather than of explosive. The reason for this being that when I found “my” SC50 whilst metal detecting on the foreshore at Whitstable, the chap from Navy EOD actually lifted it bodily from it’s hole. If it was 50kg of bang, plus weight of case, he’d have been struggling! (must find those photos!).

As for which aircraft could carried a Hermann, you will have to ask a better man than me… Sorry!

(shrapnel makes a great paperweight, so long as you don’t mind interesting cuts in your paper!)

    Pete,

I think that the bombs on either side of the gate are the largest German bombs, nicknamed “Hermann” for some arcane reason 😀 I cannot remember the size – SC1000, possibly? Having seen an SC50 go off, I would rather NOT be anywhere near a live Hermann, thank you very much.

Unfortunately I cannot help with one just the other side – I’ve probably puzzled about it myself, as well…

Yes, I’ve seen them printed elsewhere too – I wonder where the set came from?

Is it just me, or the angle, or is someone actually hanging off the nose of ‘150 as it goes over the edge in piccy number 3? Hope they were fished out…

That was fixed by Sabrinas – only the very old understand this.

Though I believe the lady herself had two large parts in one of the St Trinian’s movies, if you would like to know what he’s on about… By the way, thanks Ken, I’m 34…

Very nice to see her progressing so fast – look forward to seeing further reports and then of course… Just think, this lot here might even ask you whether it’ll be at………. :diablo:

I’ve even emailed a link to my girlfriend. Should I be worried that it’s SHE who collects the Biggles books in this relationship?

Oh my god. Don’t know if you have seen this one.

Bet he traded margin for speed at the end to do a good show pull out……….The dam looked pretty close to me.

I recall seeing a piccy in one of the historic aviation mags – I think it was in The Other One. IIRC the pilot is Lithuanian, and it’s a bridge in Vilnius he is flying under. No doubt someone else recalls the article?

Consider this as “allegedly” as I’m not sure where my source got it from…

A new radar system for the Tornado was delayed, resulting in them having to carry a block of concrete in the nose as ballast to restore the weight balance.

given that RAF radars were all named as Blue something (eg Blue Fox), this was promptly christened “Blue Circle!
