From the map and the pictures it looks as though he was presented with a pretty obstacle-strewn area to rejoin terra firma in. MK912 may have come out of it somewhat bent, but it looks as though DG did a decent job in avoiding the hairiest obstacles.

Looking at the background, although it’s out of focus, the trees look bare – I think this might be a winter incident rather than a summer one.

If you look at the Cyrillic letter, I don’t think there’s any more growth around that than on E18 – if it is a WWI-era sub I suspect the letter may be bronze, so raised from the hull surface.
