The second prototype exists. This was destroyed at take off on maiden flight.
No.
As Obligatory points out CAS is done once the airspace is secured.
But if CAS really is needed in contested airspace It would require stealth and a sturdy construction. I think Pak FA, but much smaller, with engines on top, larger weapon bays and reinforced cockpit would be fairly close.
The reason Pak FA would be my choice (from existing aircrafts) is because the wings have so many control surfaces meaning that if one gets blown off there is quantuple redundancy (1: forward highly maneuverable LERX that can change lift, 2: the normal control surfaces on the wings and 3: the rear control surfaces + 4: highly moveable tails and 5: 3D thrust vectoring). It also has two engines that are separated. It is possible that I would prefer to have some small canards in front as well instead of the moveable LERX for a CAS ac.
Anyways, it’s easier to design a CAS-aircraft for uncontested airspace. We already have A10 and Su25.
I think PAKFA is quite the opposite what CAS in secured air space needs.

No takers ?
It was/is in Canada.
Economics 101.
Law of diminishing returns.
Argentinians just updated their 1965 Skyhawks…with F-16 updrade parts. I see enermous savings there.
Doubt it. The value of a new AESA radar would likely approach or exceed the remaining value of the whole aircraft..
What does the value of the AC have to do with it if it is a workable plane after update ?
Is that why the Finns sued for peace?
Yes..it was exhausting to kill a million soviets.
Fact is that SU wanted unconditional surrender in April 1st 1944 and in September ( after the largest ever battle in northern Europe ) the terms were better.

To keep in topic the T-50 with XZ1. Comparable power due to size ratio is 4.54 x 44 kN = 199.82 kN.
IRIS-T alone causes more drag than the entire fuselage on XZ-1( + 24 more corner/egdes of interference drag ).
For CAS in contested airspace i would chose neither.
Twin jet, stealthy approach and a robust design would be my starting point.
Anything like this ?
Very nice lookin plane.
Next one.
Not recently, but they’ve been getting plenty of experience in mass-scale mobilizations since GW1, GW2, Afghanistan, unlike Russia.
Japan is the only country that has a territorial dispute with Russia and has refused to sign a peace treaty.
Japan is significantly upgrading it’s amphibious assault capabilities and training for seizure of islands, etc. :stupid:
(the status of the Caspian Sea is unresolved but that is not about actual territory, i.e. land, and is not really a bilateral dispute but a more complex issue)
But the point of this exercise isn’t necessarily aimed at the actual region it’s happening in.
It’s demonstrating capability to draw mass troops from all over Russia on short notice to use in a specific theater.
Actual relevance would be much higher for South Caucasus or Central Asia…
Doing the exercise in Far East doesn’t directly provoke those neighbors (Turkey/Uzbekistan),
and with the pre-planned naval/air operations with Chinese involvement offers an additional opportunity to coordinate forces.
I recall USSR had similar sized exercize to take over Finland in June-August 1944 but they had 2500 aeroplanes that flew several sorties a day. No match for the finns of course.
Weapon options.
Here is the armament study on this.
Only 2 hard points per wing.
Paralay has the J-20’s wingspan at 13.2 m.
I wonder when the first fan runs alonside the Dragon and tapes 1 metre measure on the side of it ? …:)
I wonder if the terms would include the shipping of all British Jews to Germany for slave labour or rendering down for usable parts such as clothing ,gold teeth and spectacles?
I have no idea, but SS boss Heinrich Himmler was in Finland sometime in 1942-1943 for a visit and asked our 2000 jews ( they had counted them ) to be send to camps in Germany or Poland. Our chief kindly ( Finlands marschall Mannerheim ) refused for this offer saying we have no jewish problem in Finland. I am really happy Carl Gustaf had balls enough to refuse.
Yes and I could name it Replica II !
I wouldn’t mind to present it at Cranfield ( aviation university ) for instance.
It could also bring back some credibility here in Finland..I have been banned for years on local aviation sites for trying to boost the local aviation community to do a small motor aeroplane of wood. They think I am a moroon who doesn’t wanna learn what others tell you. It is hard to be creative..that is all I can say. My brains must work totally differently than on 99% of the folks here.
