A lot of this reminds me of the POW/MIA scams that followed the Vietnam war . . . it’s about separating good-hearted, gullible people from their money.
But they did find Larry Thorne remains in Laos where they did not fly ( supposed to be flying ).
Aaaah… yes but did the wings stay on? 😀
On D-21 not all the way. It burned up in the atmosphere.
In my (uninformed) opinion even the later JP/Strikemaster was not exactly overendowed in the power stakes. As an unrelated topic how do Late Mk JPs and Strikemasters compare against things like the Cessna T37 and MB326?
Sheer power alone doesn’t really mean anything…power to weight ratio is already an indicator or something.
Helwan HA-300 went mach 2.1 with just 48 kN. Folland Gnat exceed mach 1 in a dive an had just 20.9 kN thrust.
SS1 went mach 3+ at 70-80 kN. Best of all D-21 went mach 3.5 with 6.67 kN.
Seconded, alertken. That does indeed not only answer the question but puts a good amount of flesh on the whole story. Thank you.
I wonder if I missunderstood this wiki text:
The Miles M.100 Student was built as a lightweight trainer as a private venture by F.G. and George Miles with development started in 1953. Although not specifically a Miles product, it was promoted as a Royal Air Force trainer but failed to enter production.
Design and development[edit]
The Miles Student at Coventry airport in 1961 when owned by F.G. Miles Engineering
Building on the company’s experience with the M.77 “Sparrowjet”, the M.100 Student was a two-seat, side-by-side, all-metal jet trainer. The M.100 prototype was powered by a 400 kgf (882 lb) thrust Turbomeca Marbore turbojet and flew for the first time on 15 May 1957. Miles had hoped to secure an RAF order, but the contract went to the Jet Provost. The Student was subsequently proposed for several training programmes, but without success.
Mark and all !
I contacted today the Peliko/Martinex company if they are interested about this game.
For the interest of all readers here I think I switch the playground to be globally interesting. Ie it takes you literally around the world. Hope this turns out to be a success story.
best regards,
Juke
I found some data on the early Viper engines; http://www.airsceneuk.org.uk/hangar/2001/coventry/coventry.htm
It says Viper 3 produced 7.4 kN thrust
If Provost T1 had that engine it would indeed have been an underdog in evaluation with 0.18 kg/kg thrust to weight against 0.22 of the Miles M100
Please note I didn’t say they worked well…only that it’s a good looking machine.
BTW: the first North American F-93 had NACA ducts as a primary air intake. They second did not…so NAA must have learned something. It seems Miles didn’t get the memo.
But F-93 was practically a Mach 1 capable jet..the compessibility and and sonic boom shock waves just don’t like NACA inlet. Miles was going 500 km/h tops.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_YF-93
Here is a jet “trainer” which used only ½ of the Miles M100 output to go 80 km/h slower with 2 people seated.

For Nikumaroro Island read Gardiner Island, the island which is the subject of the now identified survey photo strip
It is 640 km from their intented destination.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikumaroro
My locig says they may have tried to head for area where there are more islands to find one to survive.

There was lots of controversy about the concept of Draken, just the idea of an airplane without tail to begin with..
http://www.aircraftinformation.info/art_draken.htm
I have wondered if Draken was a copy of BiCH 26 ?
http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRnw1-3JwZfSqNBaC3MCNHOrBXzz0639oKG-PJyAXiYJZ6ulp8h8A
For a start – NACA ducts don’t work as primary intakes. OK straight and level with smooth flow but efficiency drops off dramatically in any other mode. That would have been enough in itself to condemn any type offering them.
Care to enlighten us more ?
A good point to remember is NOT to trust Wikipedia.
All the subjects covered on Wiki I know quite a bit about show major errors and copies of major error repeated ad infinitum
If you quote Wiki as your source you’ve already lost the argument.
I am only collecting the output data for my list. Certainly wiki is incomplete and erratic..I correct few of them myself.
OK, and the point is …
My point was to find out why Miles lost to Provost.
I got several good points that I appreciate.

A clever design. The clever arrangement of engine and intake gives some advantages in airframe size, CofG and so forth, but wouldn’t the intake have been blanked by… well, just about the whole airframe, in the event of a stall or any high-alpha manoeuvres? A NACA inlet works by inducing vortices in the boundary layer to draw air into the intake, but if the boundary layer has become chaotic it won’t work well at all. Not exactly ideal for carefree handling! So not wanted for a trainer, and little more value in the COIN role that Miles promoted for it later.
It is also vulnerable to rainwater the upper side intake..how about when bailing out ?
Did Jet Provost have ejection seats ?
—–
Edit: It did I checked.
In terms of power to weight the original the Student should be compared with the original Percival proposal. And did the accident you describe happen prior to assessment? The question about why the JP was favoured has still not been answered.
Could it be the topspeed ?
Miles M100 had 480 km/t and Jet Provost had 708 km/h ( close to P-51D topspeed ).
