Which JP are you talking about? The JP T.1 was an quite an underpowered aircraft (whatever happened to Kennet’s one?), wheras the later JP T.5s and Strikemasters were considerably more sprightly performers in comparison.
Right you are. It had 7% better power to weight ratio than T5 had.
Or could it have been because it was a grotty little underpowered jet bicycle that needed the curvature of the earth to get airborne. The Magister was generally regarded as underpowered, yet had two of the same Marbore engines that powered the Student. Of course, my negative opinion of the Student may be tainted by having to recover the wreck from the end of Duxford’s runway after an EFTO, and seeing how it folded up like an origami model that has been run over by a steamroller! Totally, totally unsuitable for a military trainer.
Jet Provost had 18.5% higher power to weight ratio.
OTOH Miles M100 just 132 kg/m2 wing loading where as Jet Provost 211 kg/m2 wing loading ( Miles being 37.5 % lighter ).
Leaving the tarmac leaves still the Miles an advantage in my opinion.
Yes but that doesn’t answer the question does it?
No it doesn’t and both are just single engine planes. Weaker powered Miles M100 maybe did not reach high enough speed to simulate close to real jet combat aircraft ?
That’s an interesting question. I always thought it a damn good proposition for the RAF and remember seeing it at Farnborough. Typically Miles, it was different and perhaps the top brass didn’t go for that, preferring the more conventional.
Okay Charlie Hunt !
Here is the Miles M100 Student; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miles_Student
Here is the winner BAE Jet Provost; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BAC_Jet_Provost
…ooops it has just one engine of 11.1 kN…silly me…I correct the list.
I was wondering…I wonder no more.
It looks much better now…and Jet Provost is amongst its peers.
Hello Mark Pilkington !
I was about to start a thread week ago about a board game that I invented some 30 years ago based on this African Star; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afrikan_t%C3%A4hti and Monoply rules applied to a game where you ( participants ) buy aeroplanes with certain capabilities and move them according to the planes factor..corcorde went 4 times the dice number etc. Usually the winner was the one who got Boeing 747 first.
Game was called FLY AMERICA and I actually painted it on a backside of a certain plywood pool game ( corona ). It was great fun..and you used monoply money on it. It would be a blast even today if reinvented.
Regards,
Juke
How far from the original course to Howland Island is this Nikumaroro Island ?
That article sounds a lot like a true happening here in Lappland in the 60ies. A 5 year old girl wandered of from her home some 90 km north by foot. She had been searched from 70 km distance in wilderness from her home. Week later she was found dead foot stuck in a river beds rocks and hand on a root of a tree..drowned in foot of water…two days later as the search was put out. Eating berries and drinking water from a river. A blue wool sweater was found found first and an intence search was started again..just to find little Anja girl dead.
Here is now what this smaller composite jet with similar amount of seats in VLJ size looks with bigger SN601 Corvette.
It is 41 % smaller but also has 41 % less output.
Cruzer wing loading is 220 kg/m2 vs 300 kg/m2 in SN601.
The SFC of the small PWC600s is at 0.45. Much better than Trent XWB ( which is supposed to be 9.5 % better than Trent 500 ).
http://www.flightglobal.com/pdfarchive/view/2000/2000-1%20-%201800.html
Only thing hindering small VLJ size planes is that they need two pilots like big ones..making them lesser profitable.
I’m looking forward to a Cessna 172-class SE jet. It should be possible…after all a jet has fewer parts than a piston engine and can burn any decent fuel.
Do I expect to see one in the next 30 years? No, not really, but hope springs eternal.
I have no idea but I checked that there was a 16 seater “almost” VLJ once…SN601 Corvette.
Also YAK-40 and Boeing 737 sported 0.84 and 0.89 kN / soul. So my diminutive at 12 seater is 1.08 kN/soul powered.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A%C3%A9rospatiale_Corvette
VT-Cruzer sports much more wing area than Corvette yet is much smaller in overall size ( to be fast with smaller engines ).

Here is the latest version..CG problem solved….and toilet/lavatory that the Mustang doesn’t have.
1200-2000 nm range at 500 ktas speed should do it.
Darn..I think I combined my calculation of nation that used Mig 15 and Mig 17…are those calculations above already included nations that used second hand fighters ?
Draken is then the most widely used cranked delta wing fighter ( 5 nations ) and Gripen most widely used canard fighter ( 6 nations ) ?!
Ok..
Then what makes these aeroplanes so popular.
They seem to be pretty lite
Mirage III 7000 kg empty ( 13700 kg max ).
J-7 5300 kg ( same as the Mig-21…max 9100 kg ) and F-5 4350 kg ( empty ).
F-16 then 8570 kg empty ( 19 200 max ).
Definitely Mig-21.
For 4th generation it’s F-16 by miles.
Ok…I wonder if the J-7 is different aircraft altogether…look at the wings here;

F-16 is used by 25 nations; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Dynamics_F-16_Fighting_Falcon
Forgot to mention..
I am in Serbia now on vacation, and because of late departure, pilot of Polish LOT Boeing 767 said he would hurry up a bit. Here is how fast he went for a good 2 hours. I was getting nervous that it would reach the speed of sound. It went as fast as 1116km/h …WTF???
Some food for thought on speed requirements for air policing fighter plane who needs to catch up with commercial passenger jet that enters the airspace at these speeds.
Tail wind can be 150 mph..KTAS was possibly near 550.
Mirage at least 21 countries. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dassault_Mirage_III
When Mirage 2000 added 24 altogether ? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dassault_Mirage_2000
I wonder if the chinese copies of Mig-21 are counted in on that Mig-21 figure.
At least Albania, Pakistan, Myanmar and Sri Lanka aren’t there; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chengdu_J-7
