A middle aged man who enjoys American warbirds.
Superb answer B17 Man – its tough being middle aged eh but great being into American Warbirds – what an experience the summer of 1989 must have been for you

I did a bit of a study into the two Memphis Belle films for a university project two years ago. Apparently more than one, I think from memory three of four, camera crew were lost in various aircraft during the making of Wyler’s film.
Thanks James – this was most interesting reading your explanation of how the original was made and sad to know cameramen went down with the B17’s .I guess they had all the risks explained to them .I didn’t know Lithgow was based on William Wyler
Thanks for the great read …Ron – go4b17
thanks Melvyn – kinda sad but reality I guess – it all comes down to money in the end
but unbelievably the local scrapman came in with a very high offer
amazing that those scrap guys couldn’t figure out that a B17 cowling, Rudder would be worth MUCH more than its weight as scrap Metal .
Whats the price of a B17 Rudder in the B17 CO-OP , No doubt Landing Gear is very expensive as I know Sally B had hers replaced a few years ago
Best Ron
any more shots apreciated – not sure i could take the slicing up of F BEEA but it would intersting , did you see Mike J’ beautiful shots of her ??

Off subject just a tad but have you seen that t.v series Band of brothers, all i can say is absolutely fantastic!! 😀 read somewhere theres talk of doing a second series but based on the island hopping campaign in the pacific. Anyone else heard this
Any more pics to come?? love seeing them
Yes – Band of Brothers is awesome – currently watching whole series again with a friend – he is impressed as well
Great comments thanks

I’d rather they just remade it all again 😀
Anyone need extras?
Did you want it making again to see the Assembled Warbird fleet or did you think the script was untenable , personally I found parts of the Script awful – where Billy Zane was doing CPR on Danny and also where a sign was pinned to the back of one of the waist gunners , a friend of mine who was a Waist Gunner with the 100th BG said that would NEVER happen in combat , mind you he did say he found his Radio Operator asleep once on a mission and gave him one almighty slap on the back to wake him up. I guess Hollywood had to over dramatize this to ensure they had Bums on seats !
But I think the script generally went down BADLY with Veterans
I was Lucky enough to watch the ORIGINAL MEMPHIS BELLE DOCUMENTARY at Mud Island Memphis where the original B17 was housed . I watched it with a B17 crew and they all enjoyed it and said it reminded them of combat and those times , Amazingly my friend who was the waist gunner said he had never watched that documentary up to that time in 1993 , we were attending the 100th BG Reunion in Little Rock Arkansas and stopped at Memphis for a visit
Nose Art and IGN B17 WRECK
Thanks B17 man for the superb shots – didn’t know that Sally B was marked up as “IS YOU IS OR IS YOU AINT MY BABY ” – I wonder if that ended up on the cutting room floor with all the rest of the unused gems !!
Thanks for adding the photos of the crash using the Pembroke – I thought the tail was salvaged from the IGN Plane which crashed as the tail looked so authentic in that Movie crash scene .Did they salvage anything from the IGN plane -F – BEEA – Maybe some part of the aircraft could have been useable ? rudder , horizontal stabiliser , cowling ,what a pity
This has been a great topic
for Mike J
Any more Memphis Belle shots Mike ? 🙂

There would seem to be so much unseen footage that could be used (sold) for another film methinks. (Just like the BoB film footage that has been re-used & the film ‘Mosquito Squadron’ that was 633 Squadron 1st time around)
Imagine what Stills and film outakes are in the Warner Bros store room – must be amazing stuff – pity they cant release it on DVD or somefink – I agree it would sell well but I guess it wont happen , mmmm , maybe I might write to Warner Bros some day
couple more
I have realised one thing about this topic – the 17’s look so much better taken in the air or air to air . I wonder if Chateau de Verneuil hadn’t crashed at Binbrook where she would be now , probably in the US or Israel .
Here’s a couple more

FLUG WERKE
Pretty fantastic plane and video – i love the way the crowd cheer then go quiet when the engine coughs into life and then stops
what a plane , smaller than I imagined

Memphis Belle
Thanks B17 man
awesome shots but the best bit is seeing Bob Morgan and crew at Binbrook – that was a nice touch thanks . So I guess they must have knocked out the kinks in those damaged cowls ?-quite a job . What a summer that was and you were more than fortunate to have witnessed that from such close qaurters !
Good luck to the Ol Sally B – I pay my dues every year even though I havent had chance to see her this year . Its what she represents that keeps me on board .
Look forward to seeing a few more of your shots when you get chance
Thanks Ron (go4b17)

SallyB Post filming
Think I took this at Duxford in Sept 1990 – she is still wearing her film paint and disguised as an F Model – it was pretty much a washout that September Air Show and nothing flew – it may even have been Oct
Memphis Belle
Thanks Mike – how long did it take them to knock that dent out of the tailplane ? or did they find a replacement – I heard they used an engine out of Mary Alice ? to replace the blown cylinder . I guess not easy to find B17 cowling covers , tailplanes at the drop of a hat
any more shots appreciated , they are sooo interesting
Thanks Ron

Gee Whiz
Here’s another one I took of Sally B as Gee Whiz – scan is a bit naff though
I too recall the squeel of those brakes and the noise as they all taxied out – imagine the real deal in WW2
