Best Flight
Had to be my B17 flight experience in Reading PA – amazing, though the 45 minutes went by way too quickly
Also flew in a friends Harvard in LA – well actually an ex Navy SNJ – We were in a formation of 8 and made a mock attack on a WW2 Victory Ship cruising near Catalina Island .I never been in a steep bank 75 feet over the ocean before so seeing a wall of water on my left side was pretty spooky
Great flying over LAX at 4000 ft on the outbound and return leg
After that flight my admiration for the Harvard grew
F BEEA
Old Chateau de Verneuil seen in better days ,anyone who hasn’t looked on
http://www.airliners.net is missing a whole bunch of awesome warbird shots

Favourite Paint Job
Of course Janie must qaulify !, I wonder if Mr Hammond would ever change that paint scheme on her !!??
Heres my painting of her – one day i will sign it !
Ron
another great shot B17 Man – was that from 1989 ? if not , what were you flying in ???, questions questions I know
I flew in Yankee Lady but just – due to a nasty overcast in the State of Pensylvania – also I wonder if you can beat the pretty patchwork quilt of the wheatfields of East Anglia
The base in the pic is almost definately raf honnington in suffolk. The formation used to fly through this area almost daily, awesome sound as it droned its way across the suffolk countryside. Still remember listening on my scanner to the B-25 directing mark hanna’s attacks on the formation of B-17’s and looking up seeing the sun glint off the buchon’s wings as mark turned in for each pass.
I heard someone saying they parked up in a Pub car Park and saw this formation coming overhead – they were awestruck and thought they were in a WW2 timewarp 🙂
B-17 man,
Some of those last piccys are in my albumn as well!
If I could get piccys on, I have a load as well.
Alas, I cannot do this through the works PC.Just think, if we hadn’t been so busy firing 50cal Brownings all the time, dodging engine cowlings and the like, B17 man and myself would have had even more piccys to post.
Bomberboy
Pity – lets hope one day you can find a way to scan em – hidden gems these shots , cant stop drooling
Many thanks guys, Perhaps Flypast could organise a ‘special’ softback with all of my photos and the many others that are about. Perhaps Midland Counties books might be interested in the prospect?, any suggestions/help in persuing this idea, JDK could you pull some strings
This would be awesome – I sent the link for these photos to an American friend – he is the Photo HIstorian for a large Bomb Group and he says
” Incredible Shots ” You should send Flypast a message to do another special issue on the Memphis Belle movie based on all these unseen photos, it would do HUGE. ”
I think he is right and co-incidentally several others have a similar opinion after seeing your latest shots B17 Man – truly amazing
Had a reminder from the US pal saying it was 15 years ago – still cant get my head round that !!
Are people getting bored now, or shall I add some more
Thanks B17 Man – they just keep getting better – good idea about the bound volume of shots from that amazing summer
looks like you had a fantastic grandstand seat – awesome – if you have any more they would be greatfully apprecaited – do you know which airfield that is under one of the formations ?- Bassingbourn ??
Thanks again ..Ron
i reckon they will make sure the A330 Pilot gets to fly the 17 and Lanc
I reckon they would not let a relatively inexperienced Pilot fly such valuable warbirds . Maybe I will be proven wrong but I doubt it
Another Shot
Bit of a naff qaulity scan but another perspective on that amazing time when we had five B17’s together in the UK at the same time , will that ever occur again !!??
Good to have the forum back on line , kinda missed it
Thunderbird
Amazing to see they are still flying her with that Non Standard nose cone
I saw Thunderbird at her home at Galveston and they painted the interior a garish grey colour – however she makes a great sound when she is up there
Thanks to the IGN for saving us all these Forts !!
superb shots again Mike
I’ve just worked out who go4b17 is B-17 man will follow.
Bomberboy
Well go4b17 is Ron L from Bolton Who is into the B17 and 100th BG in a big way – also paints the B17 in oils .Its really great listening to you guys who were at Duxford /Binbrook in a big way you sure were lucky !
IGN B17 Wreck
Thanks B17 Man – looks like there was very little left that could be of use after the fire had its way , THANKS A LOT for taking the time to scan these photos . Awesome in qaulity and composistion
Somewhere in that wreckage was my camera, my jacket and my sanity.
Hey Bomber boy – glad you made it outa there alive – it must have been scary as hell afterward when you realised what had just occured
